Life / Is Poland a safe country for people of color? [241]

@Lyzko, we were made a byword among the nations. :-( To be fair, though, Polin (Poland) was pretty welcoming relative to other countries. So was Lithuania at points.

Language / Name Meaning Of "Polinary" in Poland [10]

So your "contraction" theory...is way outside the norm on the continent.

The thing is, though, he was a Jew (not a European at all) and an American (and his dad was of a Litvish-Poylisher family).

In fact, one of our relatives, Bolesław Andrulewicz, made a sure point of distinguishing us from Poles in a letter to another relative during the Holocaust.

Language / Name Meaning Of "Polinary" in Poland [10]

On the documents, though, it actually says "Polinary". Maybe in his case, it was a contraction (His mother was Pauline nee Eckmann, and his father was Anthony. I'm pretty sure that they wouldn't use a name like "Apollos" or a variant.).

Language / Name Meaning Of "Polinary" in Poland [10]

No. My cousin had that name, as did other Jews and many Poles per genealogy.com/ftm/s/l/e/Steven-W-Slesinger-Melbourne/WEBSITE-0001/UHP-0213.html

Life / About Poland - famous subjects Polish people like? [6]

Merged: Question About Fame And Famous People, And How Would People In Poland Answer It?

I think that famous people say that they hate fame just to try to dissuade others from wanting and/or having fame, so that they can keep all of the fame to themselves and become more famous. I also think that many non-famous people who say that they'd hate or otherwise wouldn't want fame are trying to dissuade others from trying to the get the fame that they themselves want. Is it just me?

Life / Can a secular muslim live in Poland? [24]

Why would this be a selling point? If anything it means Warsaw becoming a little more like the crap they want to get away from.

All head coverings are Mohammedan, right? Ok, then; these women must've missed that memo:

UK, Ireland / Polish man beaten to death in London! [99]

The guy's name was Arek Jozwik, and Arek Jozwik was apparently murdered by 20 teenagers! Not to mention "slave".

News / Poland And the Pope: Not Happening, Apparently [58]

Pope Francis is set to arrive Wednesday in Poland, but the homeland of Saint Pope John Paul II - Francis' most popular modern-day predecessor -- is not rolling out the red carpet for the pontiff whose social agenda has alienated many in the conservative nation.

Gazeta went to add insult to injury:

The Pope, an inconvenient guest," was the headline on an article earlier this month in Gazeta Wyborcza, Poland's largest circulation newspaper.

Can anyone say, "Oj wej!"?

They're not big fans of Papież Franciszek.

Genealogy / Red Hair - recessive gene from Poland? [108]

Some certainly do, however the Slavic world covers a wide area and some Slavs are dark, Some are redheads (and that may show Ashkenazi, Celtic or Viking blood.

Indigenously, though, Slavs were light haired and light eyed. Then came in the, e.g., Jews, Tartars, Celts, Vikings, etc.. BTW, some Jews had light eyes prior to coming to Europe:

Genealogy / Red Hair - recessive gene from Poland? [108]

Slavs have light hair by nature, and only 10% of Irishpersons (similar to Scots) have red hair in their genes. Jews and others brought the dark (including red) hair to Poland.

News / What kind of Poland do most Poles want? [101]

Therefore only an oily hypocrite would go around pointing a critical finger at the Abrahamic faiths of Christianity and Islam while remaining mum about Judaism..

Really? Islam is an Arabocentric syncretic adoption and adaption of Judaism and Arab paganism, and Christianity started off as Nazarene Judaism.

Genealogy / Kruszynski, Krusinski, Krasinski, Etc.: Variants of Surnames, or Differences? [7]

Krusiński is used by more than 800 people in Poland, Krusyzński by some 5,000.
Krasiński comes from a different root - krasa (beauty). The Kru- ones from kruszyć (to crush).

1) Good point, although I've not seen "Kroszynski".
2) So, "Krus" and "Krusz" are basically the same?

History / Stalin's Holocaust Against Jews And Poles As "Self Defense" [36]

Stalin, too, hated Christianity (He was a former seminarian.) and Jews in general. Again, Stalin had useful fools just as ****** had kapos:

A good deal of evidence has amassed that suggests that Stalin had a grand plan to deport the Soviet Jewish population en masse.

Normally, I no longer read "Tablet" because of its Anti-Messianic stance. Still, this "Tablet" article is well sourced.

History / Stalin's Holocaust Against Jews And Poles As "Self Defense" [36]

For starters,Stalin was a Georgian, not even an ethnic Slav!

I never said that Stalin was. Categorically, nonetheless, he despised Jews more than Poles. jewishhistory.org/stalin%E2%80%99s-anti-semitism/:

Stalin's attitude seems to have been based in part on what he took to be Hitler's successful use of anti-Semitic demagogy. It was certainly also due to his increasing Russian nationalism, to which he felt, most, or many, Jews were not truly assimilable. And the idea of a special Jewish predilection for capitalism is of course to be found in Marx. He especially opposed Jews who were Bundists, or religious activists, or 'cosmopolitans,' or secessionists, or Zionists, or were agents of American-Israeli organizations.

History / Stalin's Holocaust Against Jews And Poles As "Self Defense" [36]

"Polish policy led to the disaster in September 1939, because during the 1930s Poland repeatedly blocked the formation of a coalition against Hitler's Germany," Andreev said in an interview with the private TVN station. "Poland was therefore partly responsible for the disaster which then took place."

As one of Litvak and Poylishe descent, I sat there thinking, "So, the Holocaust in Russia was an act of 'self defense'. Tell me more. Anti Semitism rears its ugly head again."

I am livid that anyone would categorize Stalin's ethnocide against particularly Jews and Poles (whom did have a relatively-good track record compared to other countries) as "self defense".

News / Tadeusz Markiewicz: A Zionist Dreyfus? [2]

According to the Times of Israel:

Tadeusz Markiewicz had permission for the July 2014 rally in Warsaw to run until 4 p.m., but it lasted longer, leading to the indictment and the trial that started Tuesday. The demonstration, which attracted about 80 people, was held during Israel's war last summer with Hamas in Gaza.

The pro-Israel rally was in response to a pro-Palestinian demonstration held the same day. Both were held next to the Israeli Embassy. Police separated the two groups of demonstrators.

In November, Markiewicz received a warrant issued by the court to pay the $570 penalty for "disruption of the second demonstration by using a sound system." Markiewicz's lawyer, Monika Krawczyk, appealed the judgment.

timesofisrael.com/polish-jewish-activist-goes-on-trial-over-pro-israel-rally

Sometimes, demonstrations run over; and I'm sure that the other demonstration group used a sound system. By the way, Alfred Dreyfus never did make aliyah; and that's why I call Tadeusz Markiewicz "a Zionist Dreyfus".

Merged: Could Lisko Orlisco Actually Be Liškiava?

It is "Liszków" in Polish. Maybe it's "Lishkov Orlitsko"?

Merged: Could "Lisko Orlisko" AsLipsk's Nicknamew Have Been Related To Lesk In Olecko?

Of course, incidentally, I can't ask Granduncle Tony (until the Resurrection, anyway).

Off-Topic / Polonophobe Alert: JIGGLE (@JIGGLEIN on Twitter) [12]

You're welcome. I just hope that people realize that, despite Poland's imperfect history and (so to speak) sore thumbs, there were (as I and Jon noted) many brave Poles and Non Poles in Poland whose stories are worth recounting. PS Those two pictures are of my distant cousins Paweł Margiewicz and Franciszek Andrulewicz
