Travel / Mosques in Krakow? [131]

Mosques are part of Polish heritage. Have you visited the wooden ones in the east for the descendants of Tatars? Or the Muslim cultural centre in Gdańsk which contains a mosque? Part of the tapestry that makes for a Poland that is diverse - and richer as a result.

Work / Considering doing a PhD in Poland: ECTS doctoral studies [10]

Considering doing a PhD in Poland in a completely different field. Does anyone know if there is any kind of credit transfer possible in such cases?

I doubt it if it's in a completely different field. Were you awarded a MPhil instead? That might be transferable. Otherwise, I'd imagine they'd ask you to start from scratch (or near enough).

UK, Ireland / WHAT IS SO SPECIAL LIVING IN U.K [90]

At least we are not driving on the wrong side of the road

But we don't have bilingual signs in French as well as English. And that's worse.

Travel / TRAIN JOURNEY..DRAWSKO TO POZNAN...help needed... [30]

If you have time to kill at Stargard, be sure to catch the tannoy announcements which include various bird noises designed (presumably) to frighten off the resident pigeon population. They don't work but they are a blast.

And yes, you have to change in Stargard with just under an hour's wait, according to the timetable. Though that's not a bad thing given that the trains on that line don't always run to schedule ...

Work / Is it normal for companies/schools in Poland to be rude? [116]

I certainly echo what Seanus says (and by the way wish to thank him for his very helpful advice during my stressful dealings with that particular school). I'll repeat my experience here for people looking for work with private language schools: They very often need you more than you need them, so DON'T accept any appalling conditions they try to impose on you and above all, do NOT sign any dodgy contract they try and foist on you. While such contracts are probably not worth the paper they are written on, they are quite distressing in their draconian terms and the penalties they threaten to impose. Keep the ball in your court.

Thank GOD for the EU, then.

News / Too much change in Poland?! [25]

I agree. Every time I go shopping, the shop assistant always wants some awkward amount of change. Something costs ZL 16 and you give ZL 20, (s)he wants you to hand over ZL 21. So yes there is too much change in PL - especially those fiddly little groszy. Fah!

UK, Ireland / Sad life of a Polish migrant in the UK. Ch. 5 - Racism [259]

And if one meets a genuinely nice person, they are usually so nice that one wants to shove them in the bushes and make sweet love to them.

Do they have split personalities?

Generally not. Some do. But more to the point, have you been diagnosed with Borderline Personality Disorder, by any chance?

Language / Too many English words in the Polish language! [709]

From what I'm told, if a Parisean meets a Quebecois, they speak English!

Then you would told wrong! There is so much inter-communal exchange between France and Québec now that educated speakers from both countries have little trouble understanding each other. Less-well educated and/or rural speakers from both countries would have difficulty - but that's true of the English-speaking world as well.

Life / Picking up BBC television in Poland [41]

Are there ways of picking up the BBC iPlayer from Poland via the net? I know normally a non-UK IP address is blocked, but I believe there are ways of disguising your IP address ... Any tips on how?

Language / Too many English words in the Polish language! [709]

Although the English language is somewhat "imperialistic" in this respect...

How can a language act imperialistically? Do you mean speakers of English do? I think I know what you mean (and will probably agree with you) but do you have examples?

Language / Too many English words in the Polish language! [709]

It is called language contact and has happened for as long as languages have been spoken. It's a cross-fertilization of cultures, that's all. It's not as if the higher registers in Polish are breaking down and that educated people don't know how to write correct Polish because of interference from English.

Life / Awkward Polish dinner party conversations with 'patriots' ... [25]

you can always sneeze loudly and say 'sorry i'm allergic to bullsh*t', get up and leave

LOL! Good one.

The trouble is, you can't always choose the relatives of your friends - I mean, if these comments were from people I called friends, I'll call them on it with seconds, and if they persisted ... do widzenia!

Life / Awkward Polish dinner party conversations with 'patriots' ... [25]

So, you're a dinner guest at the relatives of a friend, and as you are a foreigner, you tend to be the centre of attention. All is going well and then the conversation turns to national comparisons and you're feeling kind of on the spot because there is obviously something else going on that just mere inquisitiveness. Of course, you get "patriots" in every country who get a kick out of proving how superior their country is to every other single nation on earth, but I have noticed it particularly in Poland where otherwise well-educated, middle-class people tend to engage with the "my tribe/gang/country/nation is better than your tribe/gang/country/nation" type of diatribe. Perhaps this is more common elsewhere than I have otherwise given credit (and as I type this I recall a couple of times English and Welsh friends nearly coming to blows over how terrible each other's respective country is!) and perhaps it's because I find myself in the position of being "The Other" that I am only now particularly noticing it, but does anyone have any experience/advice about handling this situation, other than imbibing the prolific glasses of vodka on offer and getting quietly sozzled??

Work / Salary for Teaching EFL in Krakow [120]

It is much easier to pick up lessons once you are here than at a distance.

Yes! Check the clauses and decide if that really is the sort of place you want to work for. As Jonni says, these clauses actually mean very little in practice, but be prepared to be threatened if you decide to take up a better offer.

History / Polish hatred towards Jews... [1290]

- You see these buttons?

- Yes.

-They are made from the bones of Jews.

-What?

-Yes, you know, somone dug up the bones and made them into buttons. These. And then he smiled proudly.

I normally like meta-bigotry jokes but this one I just don't get! At what point do I laugh?

History / Polish hatred towards Jews... [1290]

Oh by the way, Egypt is going to build a huge wall along their border with the Gaza Strip. To stop the gun smuggling by Palestinians. Don't hear anybody here about that. But oh dear if Israël builds one. Then it's a crime against humanity. Does anybody here at all know why the Israeli built that wall?

Yes and people forget about the Berlin Wall too.
