History / The Riga Peace Treaty [64]

but yeah cheers for reminding us of the 5th column that cam over from Russia

Soldiers who ended up in serving with that part of the Allies rather than any other. Do read up on history goof. BTW, the "5th column2 was a German thing.

good ol' Zygmunt Bauman

Well, he's old and I can assure you personally that he's good, however do you have evidence that he was among the Polish soldiers raping captive women? Be careful here - he has good lawyers.

which other nationality than Russian were the rapists.. cough cough Red Armists from then??? Chinese? American? maybe be Martians ;)

Were there Chinese, Americans or Martians serving with the Soviets in the Battle of Berlin? Can you think of any others,

cough cough

, like Polish divisions...

History / The Riga Peace Treaty [64]

I've read that article and I do not see where it says the woman is Polish

Indeed - it isn't an issue of nationality at all. In any case, if someone tried to make it such they'd be inviting in the issue that not only were the victims of more than one nationality, including Poles, but so were the soldiers who were raping them.

History / The Riga Peace Treaty [64]

Desecrating war graves and destroying war monuments is what goofy was suggesting, that is not the same as renaming public places or removing party political symbols. ISIS destroyed Assyrian monuments, the Taliban destroyed the big Buddhas, ISIS in Libya want to destroy Greco-Roman towns.

I very rarely agree with you Barney, however I do here. War graves and memorials in particular should be respected. Most of the soldiers were conscripts who had little or no choice than be there.

It wouldn't be an attempt to falsify history it would be worse it would be an attempt to basterdise the past.

Not unknown in Poland. Have you been to Tarnowo near Poznan where they tore up the gravestones in the German cemetery and rebuilt the facade of the church in a more Polish style that it had never previously known? Plus of course the renaming of towns to try and erase their history.

News / GERMANS WANT TO GERMANIZE KOPERNIK (COPERNICUS)! OUTRAGE! [1016]

She chose to be French

Nope. Women has very little choices at that time or rights under the law. Europe had to wait for liberal democracy until that happened.

citizenship is bollocks

I'll quote you on that.

having a Polish citizenship does not make you a Polish nationa

Actually it does, however Copernicus was neither since neither the concepts of citizenship nor nationality existed in that time and place. Loyalties were different then. You're trying to impose later values and concepts to an earlier time.

Obywatel polski, narodowosci Brytyjskiej

No such legal category.

Your feeling is right - there might be some still on higher ground however it will be several degrees warmer in Ojców.

News / GERMANS WANT TO GERMANIZE KOPERNIK (COPERNICUS)! OUTRAGE! [1016]

Exactly, he was a loyal subject of the Polish king, and he was of Germanic stock. Nations didn't exist back then, first in the 18th century the idea of a nation crystallizes.

Exactly. Too complicated however if both countries want to put him on postage stamps, why not? A huge shared history in that region anyway.

And just to remind all the chicken-brained, froth at the mouth, nationalists and so-called patriots on this forum; nationalism is --- taking pride in sh!t you haven't done and hating people you've never met.

Spot on. Such things are just an irrelevance and anyway the world is getting smaller day by day - life is too valuble to hate peole :-)

News / The number of millionaires in Poland is on the rise [15]

Well, Pigsy, it might be more of a surprise if the number were falling, however this trend (more millionaires) just tends to grow rather than decrease. Not that being a millioaire is as special as it was in the days when a £ or $ went much further, and anybody with a half decent house without a mortgage in Warsaw is a zloty millionaire.

As the editor of the Daily Telegraph allegedly said a couple of years ago, their writers should stop using the word millionaire "since we're all millionaires now"...

Law / Am I supposed to get notice in USA if I have an arrest warrant in Poland? [7]

a lawyer so I can sue my ex for slander?

Almost impossible to do unless unfortunately it's been proven beyond any doubt that she'd lied. That generally means her having admitted she'd lied and been already prosecuted for attempting to pervert the cause of justice. Also it isn't slander for her to report something to the police or a therapist - even if that report is pure fiction. This happens far more often than you'd think.

Instead, I got the stamp in Germany

If there was a European Arrest Warrant, (Poland very much overuses those) you would have been arrested already in Germany. Those warrants can only be issued if there are already criminal charges by a prosecutor (not just a complaint or an investigation).

Poland probably dont have statute of limitations.

Poland has a statute of limitations and also a reasonably high burden of proof - it isn't just one person's word against another as it is in many English-speaking countries.

I actually plan to go back in Poland. Would that also be a problem?

You need to find out if charges have actually been filed by a prosecutor - your country's embassy in Warsaw is probably a good point of contact.

History / Movie about Polish Fighter 303 Squadron in the making [37]

your "knowledge" about Poland is doubtful.

Or simply not your particular point of view.

You even went so far as to pull out in the Internet the "I have met them" argumentation on another thread.

Not an argument - a simple statement of fact. I've met several people on your list :-)

If it bothers you that we speak about Division 303 here again, you are free to go.

A strange thing to say, especially since I started this thread about 303. If you want to try and take it off topic to wallow in wounded feelings about the entire war then you are free to go to one of the many threads about that. There are plenty of Polish language fora too.

You speak about an ambassador yet you give no name. You speak about "a debunked myth" yet there was no myth

Yes there was very much a myth - and by the way, the diplomat who wrote about this was one of the last 4 ambasadors. Perhaps you'd like to do a bit of research since you're evidently interested, however there are other threads more appropriate to discuss it in.

here was no true invitation for us, Poles.

Apart from using 'us' which is odd since you were not born then and evidently enjoy vicarious misery, your use of the phrase

true invitation

speaks volumes - as we know, the full invitation issued wasn't on the terms that some would have liked.

Anyway, back to the topic: the film about Division 303. Does anyone know when it is likely to be made?

History / Gomułka -- a true believer and realist? [6]

I doubt the ordinary workers got much of a go at it during the Second Republic either. Gomulka does seem to have had a more positive and practical outlook than some of his contemporaries - what would you say were his main achievements?

And Yugoslavia before (and really after) they became non-aligned.

Though he was liked by many - especially after what had been before.

Food / Is black tea disappearing from supermarkets in Poland? [29]

That's the stuff. Blue I think (before my time - maybe certain posters would remember) - The point is that tastes and fashions do change over time. The black tea that you're lamenting the loss of (though huge amounts are still sold in PL) was once also a trendy innovation. Just as these flavoured ones are now nd in the future doubtless something else will be.

History / Movie about Polish Fighter 303 Squadron in the making [37]

Haha, I bet you even don't know this man.

I wonder why you think that. His death was a sad loss and the quick interview outside his home that he gave on the tv news on the Sunday afternoon of the EU referendum while the turnout had so far been low probably changed European history.

If you read about Polish history the same way - without understanding as you do all the time here - your "knowledge" is rubbish.

Writing things like that whenever someone disagrees with you just shows you up very badly. I wonder if you're like that in real life? Shudder.

Moreover, what myth you're talking about? There's no myth here.

Use the search function - the issue has been long and oft discussed here.

Interesting how a thread about a new film becomes an excuse for certain people to moan and flame about a whole different issue. By doing that you're just insulting the memory of Division 303 and all the other airmen who fought in that battle. In effect, you're p1ssing on their graves.

Food / Is black tea disappearing from supermarkets in Poland? [29]

There's also (are was?) a tea belt and coffee belt in Poland roughly an east-west divide with coffee to the west and tea to the east. To some extent it parallels the demarcation line between the tsarist and Prussian partitions

That's interesting and rings true - more coffee imports into Germany. The old coffee roasting factory in Poznan has been there for a century.

when shopping for tea the novleties now seem to dominate and greatly out number regular tea.

That's also true.

We have been Pavlov-dog-conditioned to: JUST REACH FOR YOUR CREDIT CARD AND WE'LL DO THE REST!

It's always been like that, Pavlov-dog-conditioned to make those new-fangled wheel things instead of just dragging stuff and stop smearing wode over your body like a decent hunter-gatherer should.

Work / Possible lifestyle in Poland? Job offer - 12K to 13K PLN. [40]

150 PLN for a one-person meal? That's insane.

saw
It can go a lot higher than that in Warsaw: atelieramaro.pl

Though yes - I go to that bar mleczny sometimes as well, and 2 people can eat 2 courses for under 30 zl - no booze though, no evening opening and definitely no amuse bouche.

Seriously, the OP should be aware that you can travel round Poland staying in OK hotels and eating in decent Italian places etc for not much money - you can however spend a fortune too.

History / Most important Poles and Slavs that ever lived [74]

The most important Poles in the world in my opinion:

Quite a good list - I'd agree with most of those names.

This debate goes on and on between Polish and German scientists. We won't solve it here

Agreed - this argument could run and run.

Work / Possible lifestyle in Poland? Job offer - 12K to 13K PLN. [40]

I looked for my credit card receipt. The name of the restaurant is called Zapiecek.

I went once (to their Jerozolimskie branch) and swore I'd never go again - the service was probably the worst I'd ever seen anywhere in the world and the food nothing special. I won't describe the bad experience since it would be going off-topic and the whole story's here anyway findable through the search engine.

127zl sounds about right for a modest meal there. If the OP wants to eat out anywhere nicer he'll find (especially with a wife or husband who doesn't work and especially if the amount quoted is before tax) that he'll need to keep an eye on his budget - not least because colleagues in that salary range in Wroclaw will have fairly high expectations and, as mentioned before, lower outgoings.

(too late to edit, slow connection out here in in the desert)
With hindsight, it's easy to forget that this is a Wroclaw question rather than a Wawa one. Although Wroclaw isn't as cheap as it used to be, money does go a lot further there and a salary like that, not exceptional in the capital) is a more attractive prospect there.

History / Movie about Polish Fighter 303 Squadron in the making [37]

Such a pity that your version has no grounding at all in historical fact.

Exactly. Did you read the last ambassador's statement on the myth? It made very interesting reading.

You didn't just offer Lynne 'accuracy' Olsen as a source did you? Her fiction has been thoroughly and completely debunked!

Always a mistake to rely on a jourmalist rather than a historian. Especially when there's hard proof showing the assertion that nobody was invited is a myth.

Her latest book is even stranger.

Work / Job offer from company in Warsaw, EU Logistics. Is this a scam? [22]

How is he getting your names and email addresses? Someone mentioned a thing called Craigslist which I googled - it looks like an American version of Gumtree. That in itself should be a clue. If the offer's that good, why are they emailing people from a website full of classifieds rather than just putting an advert somewhere better and waiting for the best candidates to respond?

Real Estate / Swiss Francs Mortgages in Poland [71]

They gave credit in zloty but they demand the repayment in francs

Nobody ever "demanded" that a mortgage customer chose credit with repayments in Swiss Francs - CHF motgages were something one had to consciously choose over a more sensible mortgage in a currency one actually earns.

If someone says it was or is legal call him cretin

Call some of the country's best lawyers cretins then.

As long as no public asistance is given to people who took out credit for buy to let investments or on luxury properties, while others in society are homeless or overcrowded then all is fine.

Work / Possible lifestyle in Poland? Job offer - 12K to 13K PLN. [40]

It's possible to get more food than one can eat for 20zl at places such as Vega,

Or even that all you can eat place under the Marriott if you've got low expectations and can stand going there more than once.

Yes, but how many households have only one person bringing in money? I'd say it is very very few.

Indeed - that will dilute it quite a bit...
