Life / Is the word "Polack"rascist? [185]

I'm guessing because what you have posted doesn't mean anything.

"Paddy" or "Mick" are offensive terms for Irish people but are obviously regular names too.

Spick and Span is a regular phrase - doesn't mean "spic" isn't offensive, in context.

etc

But it's 1Jola's call.

Life / Are Poles bigots and xenophobes? [205]

American media itself is largely to blame I think, particularly TV.

More so than most nations, it seems to pander to the lowest common denominator re programming/chat shows etc and to Europeans, appears to be infested with frequent zombie consumerism, none too subtle adverts.

It gives quite a bad and mostly unfair impression - until we see the general quality that HBO has to offer and then all is forgiven : )

Life / What do you like about Poland? [100]

Good and bad in every nation so it just isn't possible to generalise one way or the other.

Yeah, fair enough. People are probably basically the same.

Why do we even have borders/countries? : )

Life / What do you like about Poland? [100]

And I like the "no fake emotions" element of the national psyche too

As do I, I like that Poles are direct, straight - but it can backfire badly sometimes!

University, granted - I think all except total idiots realise that the US has top colleges but I think the cliché of bad education in the US relates more to secondary school.

Life / What makes a "real" Pole? [33]

You are only as Polish as you feel ...

(I have only felt a couple of Poles though so I can't say if they are typical)

; )

Food / What's your favorite Polish beer? [870]

What the hell is with the Polish obsession with serving lager at room temperature?

Yeah I've mentioned this before. I've never come across it elsewhere. It might be a peculiarly Polish thing as my phrase book specifically mentions this in the introduction re tips/culture etc.

Someone else here mentioned that there was something of a polish attitude that if something was very cold it wasn't good for you. Sounds unlikely to me but there you go.

Anyway, room temperature lager is just puke. I'd sooner not have a beer.

UK, Ireland / Long-term impact of returning UK Poles to Poland [21]

I think Sean is an Irish name

You think correctly.

There are however quite a few British people with Irish names - even if they don't have a connection with Ireland.

Love / What do Polish guys think of Irish girls? [187]

I was talking about men

Please, do continue, I'm all ears : )

...and I've yet to be asked to do something that I wouldn't normally be doing anyway so I'm kind of intrigued ; )

NO! Come back DreamOn !!

News / Praising Poland can be dangerous [45]

Very good - but I wouldn't count Russia myself.

(Yes, yes west of the Urals etc but it's just not "Europe" in any other way for me)

News / Praising Poland can be dangerous [45]

I think most "western" politicians and even media use the term "eastern" just to undermine Polands position in the modern western society.

Yeah David that's it exactly.

Here we go again.

And by the way - make your mind up:

Polands position in the modern western society

...the same west that is often cited as the root of all Polands problems is it?

That of course is on the rare occasion that you actually admit that Poland has any problems ; )

News / Praising Poland can be dangerous [45]

Draw a line from Malmo to Rome. Everything to the right is Eastern Europe ; )

Seriously though, how can Poland not be Eastern Europe, geographically?

Put it this way, if it isn't, then what is?

I guess that term "eastern europe" was always a political term as Prague was in eastern europe but Vienna far to the east was in the "west".

I'd agree with that though.

Language / Some Ideas for a band name using the Polish language? [94]

Hala Produkcyjna

Nah - a bit too clumsy.

Kto to?

Don't think so - looks Japanese to me!

Looking back, I also like zomo, moc, and fala.

Although I assume moc is pronounced mots? if so, maybe not a good idea. English speakers will pronounce it as mok.

Language / Some Ideas for a band name using the Polish language? [94]

Right.

Both fabryka and centrum are unsuitable - fabryka is a band already and centrum is a well known vitamin brand (I should have realised this)

So, still considering.

zadra

Rockin' with this one at the moment!

Polonia / Life in Poland vs Norway - good for children, benefits, etc? [43]

I don't believe it.

It obviously has a big, dark, dramatic, terrible secret - that Mr Grunwald hints at.

Wait and see - it will all come out in the news soon. I bet they are all satanists or something.

; )

(In fact judging by the antics of the some of the metal bands there...)
