Life / Poland no Unemployment benefits after paying taxes for 20 years [41]

Poland will let you in, but can throw you out after 3 months if you don't prove to have savings or find a job

So why didn't anyone try to get in touch with me after 3 months to see if I was still here, or working or whatever?

I can honestly say that I've had zero dealings with anyone from the Polish state since moving here...........except for last year when I was sent a letter from the tax authorities pointing out a wee spelling mistake on my tax form.

I doubt they really give tuppence about Western foreigners tbh.

from

Jaysus, I'm lucky Poland let me in so. I came here with 2 months rent and a few shillings for beer and grub the promise of a handful of job interviews.

The first one was two years, the second one was five years

Ah, sure I was close enough ;)

it's residence permit

yea, that's more or less it.
You move here and get a temporary one for 3 years, then you get one for 10 years and I don't know what's after that.

Pointless though, as an EU citizen you have freedom to move between the EU states.

Then again, I read an interesting article that Poles suffers the worst surveillance by their government of all the European countries. So Big Brother is always watching.

they mean that if you don't claim it, you lose it (i.e. if you don't claim it, you do not get it and cannot apply for it retrospectively), not that you lose the right to claim it in the future.

yep, you'd be right there......unless there is a cut off point time wise. Need to check that.

Still though, ignorance of the law is no excuse. He got fired, he really should've know what he had to do. Obviously he's an educated man (with such a high wage). I'm sure he can afford some swanky lawyers that can help him out. Going to the British press ain't going to do him any help though, can't imagine a Polish judge wouldn't frown upon that.

you don't have to sign up for it when you lose a job.

Righto

a quick serach shows that you need residency, permission to stay in Poland

That;s the bit I don't get. Since Poland is an EU country and most of use immigrants here...on this forum at least....are EU citizen how come we need permission to be here?

Complete nonsense so it is.

I can't see that rule here:

From Irish literature:

Apply for a jobseeker's payment as soon as you can after
losing your job so that you don't lose out on payment.
You can download the form for Jobseeker's Benefit and
Allowance (called UP 1) from welfare.ie

from a PDF available here: losingyourjob.ie/losingyourjob_leaflet.pdf

Maybe you can wait in the UK, as Jon says, I'm trying to find info on UK sites, but by God, your government doesn't like making websites easy to find stuff on.

The reason for doing it straight away in Ireland is so that your pension payments, PAYE & PRSI are still kept up, otherwise you'll lose out on a few payments and a few payments of dole because I think it takes around 9-11 weeks for the decision to be made.

It's really his own fault for not registering as soon as he was fired.

The rule is the same in the UK, it's the same in Ireland. As soon as you lose your job you must register with the social welfare system.

I've sympathy for the poor bloke, but the rules are the same for Poles in Britain and Ireland who wish to claim welfare following losing a job.

UK, Ireland / "These Scottish are only here for the free booze" - Bestman speech at a Polish Wedding [18]

Poles love pictures

no, been to some weddings where they did that and it was really embarrassing. Nobody wants to see boring baby pictures or photos of dorky kids making their first communion, confirmation etc.....well, lame people like grandparents do.

to be a good orator you must appeal to your audience needs.

You forget that 99% of Polish wedding don't have speeches. By having a speech you're actually inserting your culture on their traditional wedding celebrations. Better not to thread on toes and keep it short and sweet.

What, the navy story?

Haha, yea, that actually would be funny.

previous time in the navy when he woke up stark naked and cant remember why he got there, please tell me that's not too much ?

naw, that's funny. Polish granny won't laugh, but Polish grannies don't laugh anyway.

The speech is 9 min max, already timed it.

you times 9mins, plus the laughs of the English speakers and the Polish speakers.
Anything over 5 minutes is risky.....but if you can keep them laughing then they'll be in the palm of your hands....but remember, Poles don't have speeches at their wedding so aren't used to being without vodka for a full 9 minutes.

then again, keep them laughing and you might get a Polish bridesmaid sniffing around ;)

I wouldn't do that.....the guest who don't speak Polish will miss out on your jokes.

Speeches can be hit and miss at Polish weddings as they don't usually have them unless it's a mix of cultures wedding like the one you're going to.

Just keep it light-hearted and shortish and you'll be fine, otherwise, the Poles will get bored and get back to the vodka ;)

Life / How and where do I return empty alcohol bottles in Poland? [17]

but it's better to give bottles which have a deposit on them to the gentlemen who can be found sleeping next to those bins.

Yea, that's what i do...more or less, just leave them and tin cans in a plastic bag for them to collect.

Bogdan Chazan is also an accredited doctor, it doesn't mean anything.

Flagless' article is very good, a balanced view, maybe you should have a read of that and not always side with what those in authority want you to think....ha, what am I saying, when have you ever done that.

No, that research has been shown to be incorrect.

What the proper more recent research showed was......if a person is susceptible to schizophrenia (i.e. there is a history of it in the family) then regular use of cannabis will bring it on faster.

If schizophrenia is in your genes it will probably effect you at some stage of your life, using cannabis will bring it on faster. The same was found with dementia.

So, unlike what you are saying, cannabis does not cause schizophrenia, if it's already dormant in your body then you shouldn't be taking drugs anyway.

Re: mental issues, there has been some great research lately showing that treating people with post-traumatic stress with MDMA and LSD has been incredibly helpful.

Off-Topic / Where to find Emma Watson look-alike in Poland? [9]

but you don't even know what she looks like

You don't know that. Unless you're a troll and you're posting from both accounts.

she's just getting old

We're all getting older, every second we live. It's an unfortunate side effect of living in this spectrum of time and space.
Pity really that we can't transcend between the dimensions and pop in and out of time from time to time.
Like the man said.

Genealogy / Where did most Germans live in Poland in the 19th century? [26]

Draw a line from Katowice to Gdansk, west of that line.
Wroclaw, Poznan, Katowice and the other main cities in this zone are almost all former German cities.

But it's a can of worms tbh and the borders and regions changed hands many many times in the times of dukes, princes & kings.

Off-Topic / Where to find Emma Watson look-alike in Poland? [9]

Every Emma Watson lookalike lives in a place called Szopienice.
They are schooled by a man who speaks to pigeons, a bit like in the Harry Potter books.
When they finish their education many of them find it difficult to adjust to life on the outside and many fall into prostitution and crack addiction.

But they all tend to stay around the Szopienice area.
Have fun.
Don't be a fool, wrap your tool.

Work / Career as an English teacher in Warsaw Poland [28]

Don't come unqualified, you'll get a better paid job if you come equipped with a CELTA course under your belt.
There's still plenty of work to be found. Money isn't as good as it was, especially in the large cities but you can still certainly make a living.....but be prepared to work long hours.

You can start at 7am until say 10/11 doing lessons in businesses, then work in a language school in the evenings, from 16.00-20.30 or there abouts.

Best of luck.

There's plenty of info already on this forum, have a search.

Life / Legalising Marijuana in Poland. Therapy available? [76]

The study only suggests marijuana is not addictive it does not provide conclusive evidence

OK, so we're going to disagree on this.

But everyone in the science community seems to agree on 2 certain things:
Marijuana is nowhere nearly as addictive as cigarettes.
Marijuana is nowhere nearly as addictive as alcohol.

Now, most of us know that the only reason marijuana was made illegal in the USA was because the powerful tobacco industry lobbied for it to be banned.

Surely, thanks to scientific research, and if we allow cigarettes and alcohol then safe marijuana consumption should be allowed also?
If not then we should also ban more addictive substances like cigarettes and alcohol.

Imagine if you will than tobacco and alcohol were discovered today, do you imagine the public would be allowed to consume them?
I think not.

Life / Legalising Marijuana in Poland. Therapy available? [76]

A marijuana addict's life is controlled by marijuana

It is scientifically impossible to become physically addicted to marijuana.
Psychologically yes, a very small minority of heavy users can become so. But once a person decides to take the step to stop smoking they can do it. It's not like heroin or cocaine addiction where they need the drug to function.

Marijuana is not a gateway drug. Most reputable researchers say there's no such things even as a gateway drug.
However, once recent study: news.ufl.edu/2012/07/10/alcohol-gateway
Says that alcohol is the true gateway drug.

"In the sample of students, alcohol also represented the most commonly used substance, with 72.2 percent of students reporting alcohol consumption at some point in their lifetime. Comparatively, 45 percent of students reported using tobacco, and 43.3 percent cited marijuana use. In addition, the drug use documented found that substance use typically begins with the most socially acceptable drugs, such as alcohol and cigarettes, then proceeds to marijuana use and finally to other illegal, harder drugs. Moreover, the study showed that students who used alcohol exhibited a significantly greater likelihood - up to 16 times - of licit and illicit substance use."

However, I tend to side with this study. One that was carried out of a 12 year period by the University of Pittsburgh:
scienceblog.com/12116/study-says-marijuana-no-gateway-drug

Another question; in most countries now in Europe there is a vocal minority who are demanding that soft drugs such as marijuana be legalised. Is there something similar here?

amount of Junkies

Junkies, by definition, are addicted to heroin.
It's impossible to become physically addicted to marijuana.
Heroin junkies have nothing to do with the questions posed.

Nor will I download a PDF that you've posted. God knows what kind of virus could be embedded in it.

Curb alcoholism. But this has occurred in Polish youth compared to older generations anyway

Yea, a good thing.

Turn a significant percentage of the Polish population into apathetic vegetables

Well, when you consider than less than 24% of people voted in the most recent elections, then it would seem that Poland is already a land of apathetic vegetables. We may as well be taking advantage of these vegetables and make some tax money off their recreational drug of choice.
