Language / GCSE Polish experience. [51]

If your link is the standard required, I may have to reconsider?

it's not O level, it's A level equivalent. and it's for students who were born into the language.

don't worry about it and continue with what u are doing.

News / Polish hero pilot lands 767 without wheels. (Warsaw) [191]

For me jumbo jet means a common name for large jet airliners . I didnt take this name out of nowhere but from the media which uses such term .

the original jumbo jet was the 747. nowadays the term 'jumbo jet' can be used when refering to any of a number of the larger wide-body jets.

the airbus A380 is a 'super jumbo', which can be used as an example of how the word jumbo has progressed in aviation terminology.

so for once i agree with polmed.

USA, Canada / PolAm style Thanksgiving? [35]

What does your PolAm family serve on Thanksgiving? Anything beyond the standard mainstream fare of turkey with sage dressing, sweet potatoes, cranberry sauce and pumpkin pie?

In your experience, does that stereotypical 'big Thanksgiving dinner with all the trimings' differ in any way in Polish-American families from the mainstrteam menu? Or Polish-Canadian families (where Thanksgiving is celebrated in October) for that matter? In fact, is the mainstream Canadian Thanksgiving meal identical to the US one?

one day u might actually check your own threads.

News / First Rail Freight Service On High Speed One between London and Wroclaw every week [5]

Anyone done this?

I've done boat to the netherlands then train to wroclaw. it wasn't direct and actually took longer than the bus.

that was then. nowadays i'd welcome a fast train to the uk, but knowing that from wroclaw, it's six hours just to berlin puts me off a bit.

i think there is some sort of plan for the trains to go from one end of europe to the other. spain-germany is certainly happening now. when it includes new track and high speed trains in Poland, travel ideas might change a little.

I know the crash position is probably a load of old XXXX designed to keep people vaguely calm etc,

one reason why, in my day, passenger seats on the RAF VC10 faced toward the rear of the aircraft.

News / GERMANS WANT TO GERMANIZE KOPERNIK (COPERNICUS)! OUTRAGE! [1016]

BTW why was Nobel prize winner Izak Singer called Polish Jewish American instead of just Polish ,as he was born in Poland .

why should i care. he is not part of this topic.

why do Germans claim Kopernik to be German if he was born in Poland

read the following. there is a little clue in there.
history.mcs.st-and.ac.uk/Biographies/Copernicus.html

for me, if he was born in Poland then he was Polish. usual exceptions apply.

News / GERMANS WANT TO GERMANIZE KOPERNIK (COPERNICUS)! OUTRAGE! [1016]

It is not because of his religion , but parent , which makes him a Jew

don't u get it. a jew born in britain is british. a jew born in Poland is Polish.

noone gives a toss (in this thread) about nick's religion. it is his nationality that matters.

the germans claim german. the Poles claim Polish. and this is the point of the thread, nothing else.

News / GERMANS WANT TO GERMANIZE KOPERNIK (COPERNICUS)! OUTRAGE! [1016]

he is considered Jewish, if some Brits like it or not .

he was still british, whatever religion.

or maybe in his time he was english. i can't be bothered to check dates.

it is pointless to argue what other people are or were. the thread is about one person only: nick (to his mates) copernicus.

Life / Trick or treat in Poland [24]

obviously this is a phenomenom which will no doubt trickle down to the provinces in due course

when november 1st is part of a long weekend then it is unlikely that people will get together for halloween. the whole weekend is based on visiting the graveside.

i can't imagine many of the older folk visiting a cemetery on october 31st and then allowing their offspring to go and party.

i have seen pumpkins used in recent years. it never caught on though.

the culture of november 1st (and the days around it) is too strong for halloween to succeed. at least at the moment.

Classifieds / English cuisine week in Lidl shops in Poland [203]

I am sure I have seen parsnips and butternut squash

farmers grow that which brings most profit. i remember about ten years ago when a load of them switched from wheat to sweetcorn.

things like parsnips might be coming from ukraine.

in the wroclaw area it's: wheat, sweetcorn and not much else. smaller farms seem to produce spuds and other things.

Life / Trick or treat in Poland [24]

anyone else have any Polish trick or treat related stories

i can only say that in my neck of the woods it was an ordinary evening/night with no sign of trick or treat or pumpkins.

it may have been different in rynek, but i didn't check it out.

UK, Ireland / What do you like about living in Britain? [134]

I wonder what do you like about living in Britain.

freedom to wear what you want without too much hassle from the locals.

here in Poland one might become an object of ridicule when expressing such freedom. maybe not as much as in the past, but it still happens.

I come form the Masurian Lake District in Poland and miss a lot the forests and lakes and the fact that one can go for a trip anytime and it's free or almost free

Have u tried the Lake District in england ? it can be a bit hilly. it's not flat like the Masurian Lake District.

OK then, tell us where to find ready meals in the supermarket.

they can be found. biedronka sells a few lines.

the problem is that Poland doesn't even seem to understand the concept of ready meals.

ready meals in Poland are limited, whereas in the uk there are hundreds of choices.

I wonder what do you like about living in Britain.

some of the cultural stuff that i suspect Poles ignore: gardening/flower shows, agricultural shows/horse trials, the fact that there are crazy, yet serious, competitions like the world conker championships. there are loads of things really.

the choice of quality food products, which includes stuff i can throw in the microwave.

but i don't live in britain now.

Language / Pronunciation difficulties for Poles speaking English [40]

Hut' in Polish sounds like " hat " , but "Hat " sounds in Polish like "het".

when someone can recognize certain words... they are pronounced correctly. this is after learning english alphabet sounds.

most learners will recognize 'hat' and will give the english pronunciation.

However, daughter number three read 'hut' as 'hoot'. this is because she'd never seen the word before.

when there is a difficulty the Polish alphabet sounds come into use.

Genealogy / Is there a Polish version of ancestry.uk? [4]

type in your surname and hit SZUKAJ!

but if one uses the wrong spelling (changed from original) or doesn't use Polish characters (like for example ą ł ś) then the result will be false.

the same problem can occur on other Polish genealogy websites.

Genealogy / Is there a Polish version of ancestry.uk? [4]

u want an english language website that deals with Polish ancestry, yes ?

most websites that deal with Polish genealogy are actually american.

it might be easier if u just gave us a name and possible place of birth.

then we can help with what will be your first problem... spelling differences and place-name changes.
