Travel / Weird and wonderful sights in Poland [30]

You need to make sure to add a description.

OK, let`s try. I will describe it as Europa.

Yes, it works but the description doesn`t appear above the photo so what is the sense of adding it? It is a waste of time, anyway.

So, not to lose my precious time, why not describe it just with one single letter, e.g., e. Does it work too?

Yeah!!!

Chojnice

The bull
and Europas

What`s wrong with loading pics in the forum? They don`t load automatically, but I have to correct the address for the pic to show and it is tiring. When I don`t correct it, it looks like that: Can anyone correct it?

Love / What do Polish guys think of Irish girls? [187]

In Polish stereotypes, British girls aren`t too pretty....
I haven`t heard anything about the Irish girls, though. Are they just plain?

Travel / Polish Architecture [147]

Bellotto`s (also called Canaletto) paintings were used by architects who reconstructed destroyed Warsaw after the war.

However, only the Old City was reconstructed more lor less faithfully under communism. Many 19 century bourgeoisie houses which survived the war were castrated of their ornaments, see the difference:

Travel / Getting from Krakow to Warsaw [99]

Check this site.
nowy.rozklad-pkp.pl/bin/query.exe/en?

Enter it, fill in Kraków and Warszawa and click the orange strip. Look at the table in the middle of the page.

Second column is destination, third data (set on today), fourth is departure time, fifth is the length of travel, sixth about changing. The icons suggest type of train.

How long do you plan to go to Warsaw?
I think 5 hours is OK by express train? It is the last position on the list, with this icon

The cost is 72 first class and 48 PLN economy.
To learn about prices of tickets click on Fares at the bottom.
Easy and good luck.

Travel / Getting from Krakow to Warsaw [99]

I think I somehow managed to work out the polish trains website (rozklad-pkp.pl), and found a train departing at 07:00 from Krakow, but it costs around 130 PLN (i think).

I think you are talking about Intercity train. It is the fastest but the most expensive too.
How about slower trains which are much cheaper?

News / What is Poland's politics towards Norway? [56]

You're welcome Mr G, but i didn't find what i was looking for. They were planning on building a...pipeline or sth, and Poland were to be part of the project. If only i could remember the name of the project...

The project has been dropped long ago and there are no chances/prospects for its revival. Why?
Firstly, Norwegian fuels are expensive. Not sure but can be twice as expensive as Russian ones.
Secondly, they are going to finish off in a few years` time which makes the whole enterprise senseless.

Food / Why carp for Polish Christmas? [157]

Carp? Crap more like. I agree with Filios, it has hospital potential. Fish bones like mini-swords and fatty. If a food is fatty, it has to taste good.

When people start having carp as children and like it then, they will always stick to it and know how to cope with fishbones. No hospital is needed.

Practice makes perfect.

Food / Why carp for Polish Christmas? [157]

Just wondering... why do people in Poland eat carp for Christmas Eve? I understand about no eating red meat, but out of all the fish - why pick the worst one possible? You can farm salmon as easily! Is this tradition still going strong or is it fading? Is there any way to cook this fish so it's actually eatable?

Salmon is too long to fit in a regular Polish bath tub. That is why we use carp. Simple as drut.

and those who let their dogs lick their faces LOL...

Don`t forget about cats!

Carp has too many bones, and is too fatty for me...

Its fattiness is lovely. The first thing I do while eating carp is sucking out its fat. Yummy!!!!

News / What is Poland's politics towards Norway? [56]

There is nothing about Scandinavia.

Too little importance. :):):)

I am really sorry.

Yes, there was sth today. The earthquake in Sweden was also received in northern Poland!

Food / Eating Kielbasa - how do you cook yours? [119]

It'd surprise me. Dunno why, just didn't picture you that way. I really see the downsides of a forum now. As a teacher, leading from the chalkface (well, marker pen, lol) and being in a classroom and discussing ideas is real life. Teaching requires many skills, methodology etc etc. Tapping keys is just not the same.

Yes, we, gifted devoted teachers, are a special class of people. The salt of this earth.

Food / Eating Kielbasa - how do you cook yours? [119]

Horseradish, nice. I have some from a company called Motyl, tasty.

Allow me to introduce another brand. I am not connected with the company by any means but they produce such excellent horseradish, I just must crypto-advertise it here:

It has been exported to the USA for 30 years now...

Poland doesn't need to import mustards but, were it to do so more, I'd recommend karashi (spicy Japanese mustard) and Colmans.

Try any Polish-produced mustard called Russian. It is very spicy.

Food / Eating Kielbasa - how do you cook yours? [119]

It is not my fault you don`t live in Krakow. If you did, you would have an access to excellent home-made sausage called wiejska or swojska, made from pork solely. But other types of sausage are also beef-free.

So. what are YOU talking about? :):):)

Google for recipes and you will know I am not taking you for a ride.

Here, a recipe for Krakowska sausage
wedlinydomowe.pl/articles.php?id=1384

I am really sorry. It must be a shock to you that pork-only sausage can be obtained somewhere in Poland. :):):)

Food / Eating Kielbasa - how do you cook yours? [119]

Kielbasa is typically made of Porx, right?

In Poland, yes. Pork is staple meat here.

pork and beef like 60/40

Some fakes called "kielbasa" are made like this. The one in my pics is pure pork.

Genealogy / Wolochowicz [14]

Not necessarily. Wołoch is an old fashioned name for an inhabitant of today`s Romania. Wołoch is Vlach in English. I had a few students of this surname and they weren`t Jewish.
