Holidays are different in some parts. Warmia-mazury dates are different to Zakopane, i believe.

Work / Polish Residency Cards. Is there a Permanent ID card for Foreigners? [37]

Having said this, in practice, an EU driving licence is more than enough within Poland.

Unless you are involved in a traffic incident. Recently I had a bump and didn't have my ID. The cop said it caused problems cos my DL is British (EU) but doesn't have my Polish address on it.

What bugs me is the bloody size of my 10 year id. When I was only temporary (5 years) it was a decent credit-card size. Now it's the size of my passport and is just a bit of paper (got it laminated myself).

The problem with having no Polish id card is that sometimes it can be a pain getting credit.

News / Why is Poland developing so slowly or in the wrong direction? Who is responsible ? [317]

It's nonsense - there wasn't one person in my department at uni who was a professor, yet the quality of education was far higher than any "business" course in Poland.

Yep, one academic was amazed when I said there were actually universities in the world which had mere MAs amongst the senior teaching staff. Indeed, Warsaw used to have a regular guest lecturer from Glasgow who was only an MA. Still I realise Poznan, Warsaw. Edinburgh and Glasgow pale into insignificance when faced with some Polish provincial unis.

News / Politician shot in Lodz - two assistants to lawmakers from Law and Justice (PiS) party [66]

And a Communist informer to boot - yet again, Kaczynski attacked PO (wrong move) when he could've attacked Communism (not a bad move) instead.

I wonder how lonmg before Mr K decides it was a PO plot either in league with communists/russians/jews OR PO hired him to discredit communists.

I wonder if the guy had shot a PO politician whether Mr K would be suggesting that PO had set it up to gain sympathy and take attention away from him.

Well, if they are around until they're 40, I'd be all for giving them money to retrain. Many of them missed out on an education, so they should get funded to go to university/etc. They'll have a good 25 years of productivity left - why the hell should they get to retire at that age, only to end up (in most cases) working illegally anyway?

Would you say the same about members of the military?

I agree with you about the 25 years working life but sadly a lot of employers wouldn't. Recently I applied for a job at the local uni. They asked if I'd be prepared to do a PhD and I agreed. then they asked my age (44). Oh, that might be a problemm because it meant I wouldn't be a professor before I retired.

So, my depth of experience and knowledge isn't important to the students, the fact I am young enough to ever be a professor is.

News / Do Poles take Kaczynski seriously!? [199]

he's just out there in his own world, like a child,

Well, remember his brother's treatment of Tusk when the inauguration as PM took place? mega sulk and tossed teddies all round.

PO should govern and not concentrate on PiS and Kaczynski.

But what is Kaczynski doing if not concentrating on them? Making wild accusations etc... or is that in the old SB files too?

Perhaps if PiS had governed a bit more instead of running witch hunts against all and sundry they would still be in power? It is a shame that so many intelligent and able politicans who might be able to do something positive are being overshadowed by a bitter, unbalanced hatemonger who can't see he is bringing his own party down.

Study / Admitted To Warsaw University Of Technology (Politechnika Warszawska) [69]

Polish Unis are much more cheaper than British or Irish. Also the cost of living are lower (but I agree it's difficult task to find a work here in Poland when someone is a foreigner).

Not wrong there. I once wrote a PhD thesis at a Scottish uni, defended and was asked to rewrite. For various reasons I never got around to doing so so it got shelved. I recently learned it was possible to finish and submit the rewrite (after 6 years) although it would cost me around 1500 pounds (this is just to submit and have it examined, no supervision etc). That works out at around 7500 zlots. To do a completely new PhD in Poland would cost only a bit more than that.

Another thing to consider is that there are a number of international funding programmes which might be applicable to people studying in EU/Poland which would make it financially easier than UK or US.

I meant it to. OK, only one person killed themself but, as I recall that wasn't the only police sting at the time against opposition members.

Kaczynski is mouthing off accusations everywhere: "PO killed my brother", "Tusk calling our guys 'Mohair Berets' made everyone hate us!" but he hasn't quite got the idea that setting the police on opposition and coalition members alike doesn't make you popular. trying to scare people with secret files isn't a way to make yourself national heart-throb.

I recall a moment during the Tusk/Kaczynski debates priot to the election when Mr K laughed about how they (PiS govt) had had the police watching samoobrona from when they went into coalition with them. Tusk didn't pick up on it but he could easily have asked why the Kaczynskis were prepared to go into coalition with a party they obviously considered corrupt. Did they so much want to go into power that they were prepared to lie with the dogs and put suspected criminals in charge of Poland's economy and welfare?

His whole comment about the cross being spat on and Tusk loving it is disgusting. We could just as well say that members of the church were getting beaten and he was supporting it. Or he is now using jesus christ to enhance his own image.

News / Why is Poland developing so slowly or in the wrong direction? Who is responsible ? [317]

The worst thing is that, for now - ballet dancers can quite legally retire at 40 and collect a pension from ZUS for doing so.

Well, my dad's old boss had a daughter who was a ballet dancer. her legs gave out on her under the strain. Docs said if she gave up dancing (in her early 30's) she might still be able to walk in her 60's.

How many ballet dancers actually have a major career as a full-time professional dancer into their 40's? I'd suggest not that many.

the quest for financial gains has no limits, they will tell you, that it is because they are the poor nation of Europe or because the country was under communism for a period of 45 years, but the real reason is they do not care for the greater good or the country, because their is no common enemy.

A few years ago I was interviewing a farmer's wife in SuwaƂki. She commented that the kids turn on TV and see films where everyone has a car, nice clothes etc and they seem to think moving to the city will automatically qualify them for these things, "They don't realise that you have to work for them and that you don't just get them. They don't care about their country... but without my country, what am I?"

They aren't willing to tolerate a few years of pain for the greater good

Maybe cos a lot of them have already had to tolerate it a few years and can't see any good.

But is this trait the sole property of Poles. Can you imagine how the French (or british) would react being told they had to suffer?

Life / The Polish people have a strange attitude to cats and dogs? [84]

I found my Warsaw cat (a very distinctive breed) in the engine bay of a Peugeot 205, she was about two weeks old then.

We adopted a cellar cat from Goldap, brought her to Olsztyn. She was very happy... until some bastard poisoned her, and all the other cats 9and one dog) in half the osiedle.

Well that's what the Spanish minister allegedly said about allowing Poles to work in Spain, "We could take 10,000 Africans or 10,000 Poles"

UK, Ireland / The more subtle differences: Ireland/Britain v Poland [310]

Imagine this - before Rome civillised them, they lived in mud huts. See Anglos mentioned anywhere here?

Funny, there a stone hut foundations and buildings in Britain which well predate the Romans. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Skara_Brae Britain was a wealthy and prosperous nation prior to the Roamns, that's why they wanted a piece of it.

you know very well that i have nothing against blacks in general, as long as they live in their own territory.

I bet there's a lot of Blacks and Asians and others who said similar things about white europeans a few centuries and decades ago.

News / Why is Poland developing so slowly or in the wrong direction? Who is responsible ? [317]

That's what happened in UK a few years ago.

The situation with farms in Poland is an overhang from communism. Individual farmers weren't allowed to expand and had less access to loans, credit etc than communal farms. The government compulsory purchase meant that there was no necessity for 'business' farming.

The lack of competition and chance to develop has blighted the agricultural sector.

Mind you, the EEC (EU) also did a fair bit of damage to western farmers in 1970's and 1980's, I believe.

What BS...The director was a retard.

Considering they were team leaders to a 30+ group of customers who weren't into the shopping fixes the Russian kids seemed to thrive on, I think he was smart enough to try to save his job.

Compared with a London bus-top trip, where would you take them in Manchester? (I honestly don't know, I don't know it that well)

found a dog like that in Britain once. It was the plastic bag over the head bit I hadn't heard of.

Mind you, a friend of mine in England found a mother cat and kitten stuffed into a bird cage and thrown into a bin.
