History / When will you Poles give back German land and the cities which you robbed? [557]

Isn't it ironic that Silesia flourished under prussian, german rule and detoriated under polish rules and that so so many Silesians voted with their feet for Germany even decades later...

Again you don`t know Polish history enough. After the war, thanks to powerful and influential communist governors, Silesia was one of the most heavily developed areas in Poland. Do you know that the local communist, Edward Gierek, even ruled as the First Secretary for 10 years? (sth like President) In 1970s and 1980s Silesia received huge investment and dotations and miners lived much better-off than the rest of society. Today, retired miners` pensions are higher than others`.

I hope you receive this lesson with understanding and will bear ii in mind for future reference.

Yeah? Still a majority...;)

It doesn`t matter now. What I thought funny was your omitting it in your posts.
I don`t think it was intentional.
That probably shows the difference in Polish and German historical education. The fact that Germans found and brought ex-Silesians from all Germany to take part in voting and win is commonly known in Poland. I remember it from primary school 30 years ago. :):):)

On the other hand, it is probably completely unknown in German teaching.

History / When will you Poles give back German land and the cities which you robbed? [557]

Oh forget about it....this plebiscite was controlled and observed by the League of Nations and counted as fair and square in the end.
OF COURSE the Poles protested as they lost this voting clearly! ROFL

Funny that, usually so careful about facts and details, you prefer to omit this important fact in several of your posts:

In the plebiscite, around 707,605 votes were cast for Germany, while 479,359 for Poland.[2] The Germans thus had 228,246 votes of majority. A right to vote was granted to those aged 20 and older who had been born in or lived within the plebiscite area. A result was mass migration.[6] The German outvoters numbering 179,910; the Polish numbering over 10,000.[2] Without the outvoters, the Germans would have a majority of 58,336 instead of 228,246

Travel / Poland-My 9-day experience [239]

I visited Silesia (katowice, chorzow) Wisla, Zakopane, drove through Krakow without stopping, Warsaw, Danzig and also Hel.

What a strange attitude to form an opinion about a country after seeing less than 5% of things worth seeing here.

There is nothing distinctive in the country about wildlife, architecture, rivers, mountains or beaches. The only exception might be Zakopane which is beautiful with high hills, pristine lakes, national park, rivers and impressive wooden architecture.

Funny. The person considers Zakopane beautiful. :):):)

That totally discredits him/her in my eyes. :):):) Scam!

History / When will you Poles give back German land and the cities which you robbed? [557]

Silesian became "Polish" by force after 1945...that means the language and the land. It was not polish before, neither the language nor the land. It's called "Polonization"!

Hmm, I think you are wrong. After all, there were 3 Uprisings against Germans in Silesia.

My post from another thread:
A large part of Silesia was returned to Poland after 3 Uprisings organised by Silesians against German rule of terror and injustice, in 1919-1921.
The Silesian Uprisings (German: Aufstände in Oberschlesien; Polish: Powstania śląskie) were a series of three armed uprisings of the Poles and Polish Silesians of Upper Silesia, from 1919-1921, against German rule; the resistance hoped to break away from Germany in order to join the Second Polish Republic, which had been established in the wake of World War I. In the latter-day history of Poland after World War II, the insurrections were celebrated as centrepieces of national pride.

Read complete history: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Silesian_Uprisings

The second Uprising was shown in a beautiful film The Salt of the Black Soil. It is available on Youtube in 10 parts:
Part 7 shows some heavy street fighting at 4.00:
...

Watch it to the end because there is a love scene with a Polish flag in the background.

History / When will you Poles give back German land and the cities which you robbed? [557]

How do you people know that us from Silesia want to be part of Germany or Poland. Maybe we just want Silesia back. So we can just be ourself.

Unfortunately, Europe is already packed with states. There is no room for new ones.

I am really sorry because I understand your desire to live independently.

But....what language would you speak in Silesia if you managed to make it independent?

What about Polish-Bolshevik war?

Hey, if you suggest that this war was started by Poles, I would strongly advise you to read more about history, even on Wikipedia. Your knowledge has serious lacks/leaks. :):):)

Nonsense.

Excuse me, sir, but you have no right to call someone`s theory nonsense, if you have such serious lacks/leaks in your historical knowledge yourself. :):):)

I hope you accept this friendly advise without taking offence. :):):):)

In case you wanted to argue or sth, let me say that your theory about Gdańsk and Wrocław is as good as mine. I focused on "morality," you focused on "practicality."

Do you mean what I know? :):):)

Then he could be one of them:

Why did they lose the moral right to Wroclaw, but not Dresden?

Did Poles ever have anything common with Dresden? No.

Did Poles ever have anything common with Wrocław? Yes.

Simple question, simple answer. I like it. :):):):)

Did Poland lose any kind of moral right to territory when they started the war in 1919?

And which war do you mean exactly, especially the one started by Poles?

The only one started by Poles in 1919 was Wielkopolskie Uprising, after which Poles regained Poznań area still occupied by Germans.....

my grandpa was one of those ppl who was rebuilding Gdańsk...

He could be one of them:

Well, if a population of 98 percent German and a history as a town of the german Hanseatic League since 1358 doesn't convince you the long number of german VIP's stemming from this german town won't probably either!

Nobody can deny the German contribution to the development of such cities as Gdańsk, Wrocław, Szczecin and many others. Germans did a great job there.

However, they lost the moral right to own these cities and area around them when they had started the war which led to almost total destruction:

1945:

Gdańsk:

Wrocław

Szczecin

Kołobrzeg:

It is quite natural that after the German rule, which ended with such a disaster, Poles took over. Despite their scant recources, they rebuilt the German heritage and for the next 600 years they will try to develop these places even better. :):):):)

History / Was there sex in Poland during communist regime? [60]

Did you have sex?

Yes. My first time took place in a luxurious hotel in Zakopane where we spent 3 gorgeous days. It was 1987 and I was a uni student in late communism.

Love / Are Polish men dominating, controlling and emotional? [36]

I`m a non-Polish woman and I`m in a long term relationship with a man who was born and raised in Poland. He was extremely controlling when we first met and very emotional. He`s not as controlling now but he is still very emotional. I was wondering if it is a culturally accepted practice for men to dominate and control their girlfriends and wives? And are Polish men very emotional also? I know Italian, Latin and Middle Eastern men are!

I am not controlling but I am very emotional and try to dominate my women.

Fortunately, my wife has been tolerating it for the last 15 years because she loves being dominated and my emotional twists give her food for thought which she likes as she is very intelligent.

Life / Yard waste / plastic burning - is such typical behaviour in Poland legal? [30]

Unfortunately, Poles think they save money by burning rubbish instead of having them taken away.
They don`t realise they lose much more money on dealing with their health problems caused by burning later on. Poland is the country with the highest cancer rate in Europe. Why?

The camping site owner, after the season ended, burnt this rubbish: cardboard, plastic and panels, ignoring the fact the smoke drifted onto his summer house and his family.

UK, Ireland / Hand washing at public toilets in the UK [75]

What the heck? Can anyone please explain? Do British people not wash their hands?

I heard stories from a guy who worked in a British fast food outlet. He said he was the only one who washed his hands after visiting the toilet. Nobody else, including native Brits, washed them. And they all touched food afterwards.

That is why I try not to go to restaurants anywhere.

News / Komorowski - Russian stooge, traitor background [42]

Komorowski. My goodness! Poles simply can't help voting for sons of traitors. His father - a minor Polish noble - was in the AK (Home Army) during the war. Taken prisoner by the Russians, he was immediately appointed an officer. What's more, he assumed the country estate and name of a dead man called K-O-M-O-R-O-W-S-K-I

Liar, cheat, thief, traitor - though doubtless this apple will fall far from the apple tree :)

Strange that I haven`t known this before.

I am afraid you are mistaken.

Besides, why do you want to punish next generations for the sins of their fathers?

I thought cultural intelligent people generally agree that children shouldn`t be held guilty for what their parents did.
If they should be, then, for example, in post-war Germany most children should be prosecuted.

Study / High school entry - exams, points etc in Poland [7]

The required amount of points varies every year.

In fact, it is each school that sets the limit and it depends on the achievement of coming students. If there are many who are close to 200, the limit can be 175.

If it happened that most new comers were around 100, the limit would be 100. Of course, top secretly.

News / Poland - the least liked German neighbour. [210]

*shrug*

Poland is not really much on the german radar. Don't think to much into it...;)

Well, I was only playing with certain hypothesis.

But if you suggest it is worthless, then I believe you and I am stopping playing now. :):):):)

PS: Germany on the other hand is very popular with its neighbours....seems we make them happy!

It is only money, nothing else.

Would you like a partner for marriage who is only after your money? :):):):):)

News / Poland - the least liked German neighbour. [210]

Genau! *nods*

Germans dislike Poles because we dared to reject their attempt of domination, cultural and other. Germans have always claimed, especially under Nazis, that they are culturally higher than Slavic nations.

Poles don`t acknowledge the German superiority, making Germans feel unhappy about themselves. They start thinking: What is wrong with me? Why didn`t Poles accept the German way and style of life? Why didn`t they want to live under German rule? In order and law?

It is clear that you don`t like somebody who makes you unhappy.

WE are the victims here, jawoll! And we WILL get our revenge! *waves fist*

No. Stop deluding yourself. Gdańsk, Szczecin, Wrocław* will remain Polish, You lost them for ever. German rule in Eastern Europe finished when Hitler`s body burnt in the garden near his bunker!!! :):):):):)

*If you don`t know the German names of these cities, use a translator.

Love / 'Battered husbands' - still a taboo subject in Poland [387]

My brother in law is dominated by his wife who is a nasty bitsch. She forbids him various things, e.g., take some food from the fridge or shelves, and when he disobeyed, she hit him and went totally crazy, hollering all around.

Now the beatings have stopped because he learnt to give way to have peace and quiet at home, but I can see how unhappy he is. He is thinking about divorce but they have two children and he knows that she will do anything to seperate them from the father after the divorce. She is even able to accuse him of molesting their sons.

His life is really miserable because he has to give her all money he earns and she complains it is not enough though she gets 100 zlotys daily.

But nobody forced him to marry her. It was his own choice.

I am really sorry guys but people get married too recklessly and whatever wrong happens to their marriage could be predicted. It is enough to use little intelligence to realise that a partner may be a pain in the ass one day.

News / Poland - the least liked German neighbour. [210]

Germans still bear a grudge against Poles for successful resisting the German attempt to recapture and colonize Eastern Europe. After Germanic tribes were pushed westward by oncoming Slavic nations, including old Polish ones, Germans repeatedly tried to go back to these lost territories, verging on obsession.

After many land shifts, with more than half of today`s Poland owned by Germany in the past, today the borders are more or less the same as they were 1000 years ago.

10 century
Today

The truth is that Germans were contained by Slavic nations and their land expansion was stopped.

That is what Germans can`t forgive Poles and what makes the poll results such as they are.

Of course, Germans will never admit it openly, they cover their true feelings, maybe subconscious ones, and explain their dislike in terms of Polish mess, Polnische Wirtschaft, Polish car thieves etc etc. They will never say they dislike Poles for being a major obstacle to German expansionism.

History / Wealth of the Polish nobility [29]

how was it in England and Europe at that time?

These two questions are dealt with in Polish literature. Top Polish nobles were indecently rich, richer than kings and princes in other countries. When Swedish armies invaded Poland in 17 century, thousands of horse carts with robbed goods from nobles` property were sent to Sweden. Today, in Swedish museums.

At the same time, Polish peasants were extremely poor and were treated like animals or slaves.

News / Decoded talks inside Poland's president's plane are released in Internet [337]

Experts are rather unanimous - the pilots broke major safety procedures and tried to land at any cost. They ignored warnings received from:
1. The crew of another Polish plane which had managed to land earlier in acceptable weather conditions which worsened immediately.
2. Russian air traffic controller.
3. Electronic TAWS system.

As I said before, they took the risk and lost.

Life.

Last pages of the recording are full of TAWS system warnings:

Unfortunately, when they decided to pull up, it was too late because such a heavy plane takes time to carry out such an order and in result, they crashed into a tall tree.

News / 1945-2010 Poles will march on Red square [66]

Victory Parade

Russians and other nations of former Soviet Union

After them Poles

Next, Western allies

There were also French troops which was unfair because the French cooperated with Hitler and even fought against Americans and British in Africa. Only General de Gaulle and a few French units were on allied side but one swallow doesn`t make a summer. Poland, twice smaller than France, had a twice bigger army.

In Poland, at Red Army cemeteries, Poles together with contemporary Russian officers and WW2 veterans, put flowers and lit candles at Soviet/Russian graves.

Poland officers

On 1 November, Poles also light candles on Soviet/Russian graves.
