Life / Is Poland a poor country? [578]

Capitalism is a game in which you MUST play, its not a fair game.

exactly. So no matter what your personal beliefs are- it doesn't count for crap when the rest of the world follows a different ideology.

Real Estate / What do you pay in rent/mortgage in Poland? [144]

Poland has a lot of wealthy people and a lot of poor people. Based on were they live, access to education and jobs. Those that live in villages and towns have access to health care, schools and other measurements of standard of living.

b) even for Warsaw, the average three-bedroom house is not 1.6 million, not even close.

what is it then? The houses in my area are about that- some more, some less- but it is possible to find a house in the Warsaw surrounding area for this cost.

That's a crap comparison, not least because 3 bedroom houses don't cost 1.6 million in Poland.

They do in Warsaw. 1.6 million pln.

It's been an upper middle income country for years and is getting steadily richer.
Riainy wrote, speaking about Poland:

It's actually a rich country.
That's just random stuff from the past couple hours.

I don't disagree with it, actually. But twisting these words and making it into "the land of plenty" is not accurate. It is rich for those that are rich and poor for those that are poor. But there are jobs to be had here and foreign companies are still investing which is creating even more jobs.

who says Poland is the land of plenty?

fact is- if you earn 3500 pln per month than you shouldn't even think about buying a house. A one bedroom flat is the target. Expecting anything more is unrealistic. My world is not the land of the expats. All of our friends are Polish and they all make very good incomes. They all own their own flats or houses and work white collar jobs.

Nobody has ever claimed that there is no poverty here. Obviously there is- as there is in every country in the world. But- Poland is not following the recession like the rest of Europe.

People are still buying homes and other big ticket items. Companies are still investing here- perhaps I hear about it more because my husband knows who is coming and going in the market. Loads of German companies while the Americans have taken a back seat.

Poland is still considered a good place to invest and all the companies that come here are hiring local workers because they are well educated and cheaper- but by Polish standards they still earn a good wage.

[quote=milky]Ok So, how many times the average wage is a 3-4 bedroom house in nice suburban Poland??/quote]
It doesn't matter. People who make the average wages in Poland don't own houses unless they live far outside of a city. Houses owned within the city limits or suburbs are owned by those who make more than average.

yes we are two. All my husbands colleagues are Polish except for a few expats in management. They all make bank. They own houses, flats, cars--whatever. Commercial real estate in Warsaw is good money. The companies my husband leases to are probably 90% staffed by Poles- if they are Polish companies than it is 100% staffed by Poles.

I lived in Warsaw 15 years ago and also paid through the roof for a **** flat in a communist block. Times have changed since then. Poles are educated and at least in Warsaw, the income is good --they can afford to buy apartments and cars and all the other stuff that goes with it.

I have said before- my carpenter, who is 31, and has no post secondary education- just on the job training- pulls in good money. He owns a house, two cars, takes two holidays a year and now has a baby on the way. He grew up in the blocks in Pruszkow just outside of Warsaw- hard place to live but with hard work he has managed to be successful.

I think your synopsis on Poland is wrong. Of course those in villages and smaller towns don't see the wealth that the country is experiencing- and perhaps you are right there but those that live in cities and have educations are able to succeed and become first time home owners by starting small.

My carpenters brother is 27- owns his own flat in a new build in Bielany/Warsaw. He has a large one bedroom --he has to rent out the bedroom to a student to help with the mortgage payments- but he is thrilled with his purchase.

I am not disagreeing with you but you are making a blanket statement. It doesn't apply to many of our friends or my family. My husband got an education and experience from Canada- he paid for everything we have on his own- with no help or money from his family.

we live in a house that has a mortgage that we pay- no gift money for down payment. we own an income property that we bought on our own with cash. we did have partial ownership in a house in Gdynia that was gifted to us but we gave this back to my husbands parents so that there will be one owner.

If you post but do not tell us what you pay, we'll just assume you live for free.

this is my personal favourite. The self appointed leader.

FUZZYWICKETS

no, I already answered it. 4500 pln per month mortgage and 800 average utilities--and then I commented how I thought it was a loaded question.

All this talk about "cost of living in Poland" yet nobody wants to say what they pay......or don't pay.

ok- but it is a loaded question. I was hesitant because I don't want to appear as though I am bragging about it. I can give more details if necessary- personally- I think the cost of living is low in Poland and so did my Canadian friends who just went back after spending three weeks here. They loaded up their suitcases because they were able to get nice things cheap. Old Navy and Gap stuff will always be cheaper in Canada but things like dress clothes are very well priced here.

Real Estate / Commission for selling apartment in Poland [5]

the agent that sold our house had us as the seller and he found the buyer- he double dipped. we didn't care because we wanted the house sold- but perhaps if this should happen you could negotiate a cheaper rate.

Related:

Average commission for the sale of a property in Warsaw?

What is the norm in Warsaw for the commission for the sale of a property?

My estimated guess is 2.5-3%. yeah - plenty of property for sale without using an agent

Life / Which services is Poland still waiting for? [218]

screens are not standard here but neither is buying a new construction home that is fully fitted out. Just like everything else there are companies that make them. Usually somebody that makes windows has a guy that makes them. we have them on our house- no big deal.

Subway is in Poland and people buy it. They buy it because they think it is healthy- because more and more Poles believe what is advertised is true.

My friends from Canada are here at the moment and one thing they noticed is the amount of McD's and KFC's that are here. crazy.

Customer service. There is none. I have a perfect example. Yesterday my 12 year old went to Wilanow with my friends and their son- They walked up to the entrance to try and get in to the palace and the old ***** at the counter was so rude. They couldn't figure out how to get in- my daughter speaks Polish and it wasn't clear that they needed to buy tickets at the gate than go to the entrance. The woman was completely rude and told my daughter "stop bugging her" in Polish. She offered no help. Finally a security guard helped them.

This is less than a week away from Euro 2012 where Poland will play host to the world and people will visit Wilanow- and there is some old ***** at the counter that has no consideration for a few English speaking tourists?

News / Poland's Economy Is Booming! The EU's Success Story? [711]

Pip a foreigner with her hotshot real estate husand (who doesnt get out of bed for less than 5000 PLN) and who supposedly runs her own business says Poland is booming.

actually, He wouldn't get out of bed for less than 10,000 per month. And I do run my own business.

but there is a boom. It may not be typical of a western style boom but there is one for Poland. This country is in a state of constant construction- in order to accommodate businesses that want to set up here. Jobs are available in all sectors. People are buying homes, goods, cars and loads of other things.

Is it a typical textbook boom- I don't think so but it is also not in recession.

News / Polish children boosting standards among English pupils, study suggests [16]

I started my integration process in Canada the first day I settled here. Many of my Polish friends, which I have met and accepted here (many did not pass the initial scrutiny though), have done the same. We were doing well, representing similar background and education. We did not need any ghetto support.

sounds like my husbands family too. They have their Polish friends but also Canadian. At Easter and Christmas they go to Polish church but not everything around them is now Polish. They had the support in the beginning but after living in Canada for 20+ years they have managed to find their own way.

Real Estate / Poland's flat rental agents and the anger they brew in me.... [60]

have you ever listed a place on a portal? agents scour them and harass those without agents. I have a friend who got a call from an agent who would not accept no in any way, shape, or form. My friend actually ended up hanging up on her and her flat sold in 4 days without an agent.
