Life / Why is cheating at schools in Poland accepted?! [155]

It is a good solution and it might be useful in Poland too.

yes

The worst sanction is to be banned from all the exam boards for five years, which means no A-levels or university. (You can guess what that will mean when you start looking for a job.). Consequences for cheating in the Junior/Leaving Certificate in Ireland include being banned from state exams for five years.

That's more like it!

Life / Why is cheating at schools in Poland accepted?! [155]

I'm watching the Polish news and they're talking about how sophisticated the kids have gotten in their cheating on the Matura.
They text on Facebook, among other imaginative methods, looking for answers to problems! What's equally incredible is the fact that if caught in the act of ściąganie nothing really happens of consequence to the offender!

Study / Is it really worth moving back to Poland to study in a pharmacy school? [44]

I dunno but I think aptekas are a saturated market- having said that--they all seem to be busy. I think you should wait til you are done your studies abroad first and then go for the pharm school.

Pharmacists are not restricted to working in aptekas. There's always Big Pharma :)

History / Why are Jews pestering Poland for "proper" WW2 monetary restitution/reparations? [750]

A good book to read on this subject is "The Holocaust Industry" written by Norman Finkelstein, a Jewish son of Auschwitz survivors , the book is full of documentation that points to the whole holocaust being a Jewish moneymaking scheme where nearly none of the actual monies gathered, actually get into the hands of genuine holocaust survivors, but into the big Jewish agencies and lawyers.

I didn't read the book but watched an expose on TV about a year ago. It was very interesting. All the big Jewish organizations have disowned him as one of their own.

Permit for travel from Wrocław to Zielona Góra

that's interesting. I made that trip each weekend during that time. Neither I, nor my Polish wife, at the time, had such a permit. We were stopped only at Lubin. Nowa Sól and Zielona were checkpoint-free.

Those pics really bring back a flood of memories. My roommate had a Maluch just like that one :)

News / Should Poles care who becomes French President or is it irrelevant? [45]

but does it matter for Poland/Poles in any way?

Of course it matters. France is a big player and to have them in your cornr would be huge. The current president promised to work with Poland but once elected blew her off. The contender, I beleive, made at least one visit to Poland and promised to work closely with Warsaw if elected.

Life / A recent visit to Poland. First time after 12 years. [19]

Nevertheless, my family has lived, worked, and died there for generations, and I've always been proud of it.

My father's family too. The towns remain dreary it's true. The modernization, outside of a galeria here and there, hasn't reached the Zabrze's and the Zory's of the region. I do love the forests though......btw, I had recently returned to Wrocław and Upper Silesia last October after 25 years!

Travel / House hunting in Poland (something didn't feel right) [16]

adding the frustrations we have had previously with agents and developers alike.

what are these problems you alluded to in another thread?

We travel to Poland about 3 times a year on average

how long is your travel time?

Life / Short films about traditional skills in eastern Poland. [8]

A very good short movie, I liked it. Yes, both men in that movie spoke - I assume - a standard Belarusian. But that is what it is over there. Did not you notice an orthodox church complex on the background - with typical onion shaped turrets?

Yes I noticed the church I too like the film

Smoked Meat

I loved that guy's mini vodka bottle!

I can say I was lucky to be born in communism

I feel the same way regarding my time in school. Although it was very hard, I feel fortunate to have experienced communism. btw, it wasn't all bad ;)

Life / Polish word for 'queue' [18]

One reason Polish people don't like waiting in line has to do with the communist past, when scenes like the one below (for toilet paper) were common.

Mafeketis you just brought me back. Wow! That pic says it all.

Also, Polish people have never used lines for getting on public transport. Suck it up and deal.

I didn't see it when I was back. Hmmm.

Genealogy / Vintage Photos of Polish ancestors [144]

My father's Romanian identity card. He was enrolled in the University of Lwow in 1939 and was fortunate to escape through Romania.

OMG! This is too cool! My baby sister gave me a card similar to this one (see post #25). Neither of us knew what it was other than it being in Romanian. My father too escaped just ahead of the Blitzkrieg through Romania. The coincidence is too much! I just happened upon this thread not know it even existed. Thanks to Peter for posting it back in 2007 and for Patrycja for starting it.......I feel I should look for a photo and "pay this forward"

News / Presidential elections and debates 2015 Poland [472]

Healthcare - I cannot find the photo which I saw in a magazine of 1981 - patients lying in their beds in the hospital corridor/hall because rooms were full.

true yet everyone was treated free of charge for however long it took.

Food - rationing of sugar started in 1976. Rationing of everything else -1981.

true yet everyone somehow ate.

Average time to wait for a flat sponsored by the state - 20 years.

that's true. families lived together and no one worried where they would live

Sorry, I have to introduce certain little corrections into that thinking of yours. Don`t hold it against me

no worries. btw, it's not my thinking it's the reality I myself experienced and observed from my Polish friends and their families.

News / Presidential elections and debates 2015 Poland [472]

News filtration is one thing. I maintain that life was simpler back then. No one worried, like they do now, about the basics: housing, food, healthcare, retirement.
