News / Polish cleaner blows the lid on 'dirty' Germans [124]

Mongrels. Mutts - neither Germans nor Poles, but acting as if they were the master race.

You are clearly talking about the "Angedeutschte" if anything. The Volksdeutschen are the Germans who live abroad (correct me if I'm wrong BB :-) )

chances are she is :-)

yep, the chances are she's pretty just like the chances are, she's not :-)

News / Polish cleaner blows the lid on 'dirty' Germans [124]

Well if she is a very pretty young woman and the job itself is degrading and she's having some fat ugly old man/woman call her names as if she's beneath them, how do you think she felt ?

what if she's not that pretty ;-) (kidding)

News / Polish cleaner blows the lid on 'dirty' Germans [124]

She never accepted her fate...instead to go back to Poland and try something else she stayed felt humiliated for 12 long years. Coming to hate her life...in Germany...the Germans.
Now she has written a book.If you really think that would become a fair and objective report then I can't help you!

This is what I keep repeating, you don't like it where you live, go back home and feel happy again.
No, she practically forced herself into this misery, she had a choice to leave but she stayed in Germany and punished herself.
I'm not discussing here whether whatever she's saying is true or not, we will never find out anyway but I know it always takes two to tango. She would never find herself in this situation if she wouldn't allow it.

PS: I have a strong feeling you can wait for the Ukrainian version of such a book blaming their polish employers.

I'm sure it will follow sooner or later.

Difficult to know what point you're trying to make - we're talking about stereotypes.

Well, isn't it a known fact that cars and other things were stolen in Germany and in other western European countries by some of your countrymen?

I'm far away from saying that all Poles are thieves but unfortunately some of you are and they are ruining your reputation. I also know that many of you are ashamed of them (like my friends in Poland) and that most of you guys condemn their behavior.

PS.: (Before you'll say it) of course there are thieves everywhere, it''s just that it seems like this "car stealing business" is pretty well developed in Poland.

Life / What is the reason for POLISH jokes ? [486]

Do you really think the American people of today are that prejudiced against Polish people on their own that when they see someone Polish they're going to go ridicule them?

You misunderstood me. What I was saying is that this type of jokes usually don't even pop up when there's nothing to joke about. I used Polish just as an example, it could be just as well Russian, German or anyone else.

What do you mean by level of the population?

The intellectual and cultural level of the population of one region.

But, Media has more impact then anything else.

I already agreed to it. I can assure you that our media in NC doesn't even mention Polish jokes or actually nothing about Poland at all. I bet it's different in Chicago.

Wouldn't you agree that making ethnic slurs in polite company is generally taboo in America today?

I'm not sure about this being a taboo but I just don't hear any Polish jokes at all.

As stated earlier in this topic, there were reports of people in the 70's in parts of the US with no Polish people, who thought of Poles along the lines of inferior intelligence jokes.

and I'm telling you that 99% of them didn't really mean what they were saying. To them it was probably just a joke and nothing else. If you asked them if they hate or dislike Poles, the answer would be most likely, "I don't care", "I don't know any Poles" etc. Definitely no deeper meaning to it.

Why would someone hate Poles if he never even met any? OK, people tend to repeat jokes once they heard them but usually they don't put any meaning to it. It's just a joke, that's it.

I agree that some jokes are not very nice but you won't achieve anything trying to fight them.
Like I said earlier, there are jokes about any other nation out there too.

Life / What is the reason for POLISH jokes ? [486]

I don't think it has to do with how many Poles or Polish Americans are in the area.

It does in a way because if there's no objects to make jokes about around, people don't even think about this kind of jokes to begin with.

It has more to do with what kind of media and culture people in the area are exposed to.

Well, media has an impact, that's true. As far as the culture, yes it is exactly what I said earlier, no Polish people so it's no Polish culture around here too and what follows is also no Polish jokes. Unless you meant the level of the population and not the culture that the people are exposed to. In this case of course I fully agree with you even though it happens even to the highly educated people to make stupid jokes every once in a while. nobody is perfect.

I almost never hear these so called "Polish jokes"

I don't either but then again, there are not very many Poles in NC (I've never met any at all).

it could be just about anything. I personally believe it's German because we have lots of people of German origin here in NC.

Life / What is the reason for POLISH jokes ? [486]

In the book "The Jewish Phenomenon", Polish Americans on a per capita basis are the third wealthiest group in the US behind Jewish Americans and Japanese Americans.

The only problem with that is that many people are not being even classified in any of these groups as they don't really know anything (or not very much) about their origin.

One example is my direct neighbor, his last name is Eller, which is clearly a German name but when I asked him about it, he said, he doesn't know anything about it as he's not into ancestry stuff. This guy is pretty rich. He owns every other building in my town.

My advice is to finally see yourself as an American first of all and this way you won't be peed off when people make stupid jokes about anybody else.

To be fair, you have to admit that there are jokes being made about almost every nation out there. Ignore it, you can't stop it anyway.

IQ of Poland and other European Countries

Unfortunately the IQ doesn't have much to do with one's ability to be successful in life.
You can't buy yourself even a candy simply because of your high IQ. It's still nice to have it but in most cases it's nothing but a "breadless art".

History / Why is there NOTHING (besides Gdansk and Szczecin) in former Prussia? [80]

I do listen to you guys, I just tend to disagree with your way of seeing history. Don't forget Penn that different countries teach different history.

I have to dismiss the case of ignorance or arrogance in this case since following a different way of understanding history doesn't make one ignorant or arrogant.

You know better that I don't have any problems with Poles Penn, it's just that we don't always have to agree to everything, right? Usually that's what friendship is about, to be able to talk openly about everything even if it's not always a goodie-goodie situation.

A real friend will tell you the truth even if you don't like it but at least you know, he's honest with you.

I never denied this possibility. Don't forget that the appearance is always in the eye of the beholder. I just happen to agree with Zimmy about the definition of the real beauty, that's it.

History / Why is there NOTHING (besides Gdansk and Szczecin) in former Prussia? [80]

You are contradicting yourself.

No I am not. I don't say that Danzig belongs to Germany now.
Btw. When I was in Poland and visited Danzig, I was still meeting people who spoke German and told me that they are Germans, just couldn't leave Danzig right after the war because they were too young and all or most of their family members died during the war. Later, when they became old enough to get out, Poland was still a part of the Eastern Block and it was almost impossible to leave and after 1989 when it was possible, they were too old to leave.

History / Why is there NOTHING (besides Gdansk and Szczecin) in former Prussia? [80]

What are you saying exactly by this language story? That it's not a historically Polish city?

Think for a second Marynka, in Poland people speak Polish, right? I leave the rest of it to your imagination.
There's one thing however I feel like I have to mention at this point, my sympathy for Poles (I like most of you) has nothing to do with my view about the past history of Danzig.

As I said earlier, you can have a great time with Poles as long as you avoid talking about the history of Poland and Germany (especially those two).

and the population was mainly ...% ??? and so what language was the mainly spoken language in Danzig?

Bring it on your "German". Can't wait. Hahahaha

one is for sure "Kacap", you'll be very disappointed about the level of your "German" (lol)

Anything smart to say or just wiki-quotes???

at least I'm backing up my knowledge with links about the historical facts and not just posting empty opinions like some of you. Anyone can spread a blabla bs and feel smart about it.

Depends highly on the arrogance with which you present yourself. Your's completely out of place Mädchen.

Do you seriously believe that throwing a couple of German names here and there will make you a German? lol I bet my German is better than yours and I'm not a German citizen like you (you say you are).

It was under Prussia rule after the partitions, that's true.

Let's be honest about it, what language do you believe was spoken in Danzig in its long history?

Gdansk was a free city. It was somewhat supervised by the League of Nations.

"Prussia was a region which before 1772 consisted of what was later known as East Prussia (Ostpreussen) with capital of Königsberg, a duchy since 1525, a kingdom of the Hohenzollern dynasty since 1701 and West Prussia (Westpreussen) with the Hanseatic cities of Danzig, Elbing, Thorn, and Culm, part of Poland referred to as Polish Prussia before 1772."

BTW, did you read "The Tin Drum"? Great book.

Of course I know "Die Blechtrommel" by Günter Grass. I watched the movie too.
