Life / Why is Polish Christmas on the 24th? [87]

Even this year when Christmas day falls on a Sunday?

I have off Monday, most people I know have off Monday as well.

Yes, in the States on Dec. 26 (Boxing day is in Canada but not in the USA where it's back to work as usual), you'll find many people have dumped their trees in the rubbish bin.

most people in the USA leave it up till after new year's and then it's basically time to take it down.

I'm always surprised that such a Catholic country as Poland has so many Christmas trees. Have these people really not read the bible?!

Is karp in the bible too?

USA, Canada / If America is so bad, why move here? [254]

It's a serious question. Not once have you ever mentioned actually doing things with friends.

Pull down your pants, grab ahold of that comment, and reinsert it in your a$$ because that's most certainly where you pulled it from. What in the hell are you talking about.

Oh Delph, how sweet. You wrote me a song.

Life / Why is Polish Christmas on the 24th? [87]

With my family, we all get together on christmas eve, exchange presents, eat and drink, but we wait to exchange gifts with immediate family/spouses/girlfriends/boyfriends till the 25th. We wake up early, unwrap presents, sometimes drive somewhere to exchange with others. Christmas day in the afternoon is popular here for the movies.

Did you have friends here, Fuzzy?

oh, that's cute, Delph.

I'm starting to think that you really did spend your days living some sort of alternate-existence hell.

how can you so much as comment on that when you have NEVER......EVER.....been to the USA? Why would it come as such a surprise to you, enough to render a smart a$$ response nonetheless.....when you have no idea what it's like to be in the USA.

keep up the good work, slapshot.

Care to explain where we misunderstood you.

No, I don't care to explain where everybody misunderstood me every single time.

USA, Canada / If America is so bad, why move here? [254]

I've always said that when I fly from the USA to Poland, it's like getting in a time machine.

you being isolated and through propaganda by your very own government of the former foe left an image of the lands east of the Iron curtain as some gray medieval landscape full of misery.

I don't understand this comment. I lived there for 4 years. What I have seen was with my own eyes.

What's the point in bringing up your ancestry here? Is it relevant to the debate at hand?

I am totally losing you now. Someone suggested "your great great grandparents".....I pointed out that it wasn't that long ago. What are you talking about dude.

I consider you as much my countryman as I consider my cousin 10 times removed part of my immediate family.

I'm really losing you now.

You say America is the greatest; everyone is jealous of you and envies you every time an opinion other than favorable about your country is expressed here. Everyone should worship you and imitate you in every aspect, I say otherwise.

Oh blow it out your a$$. This is not factual and you know it. Quit posting crap just for the sake of sounding dramatic. You're posting now from the heart, how you feel about americans deep down, how you hate their ignorance, their arrogance, and pinning all your hatred towards america on me, as if i fit your stereotypical description.

Poland is actually one country that works more like America - there's not much handed out here.

Holy cow.

I'm beginning to think that a lot of the problems I'm having with people flat out misinterpreting me on this forum is due to the language barrier. I mean honestly folks....it's as if you simply don't know what I'm saying. It's almost getting too frustrating to post here anymore.

10 million + of Polish ancestors, who’s great, grate, grandparents’ left Poland when you were still pushing west.

prosze cie. my grandmother came to america from poland, she was born in 1916 and came to the USA in the 1930's. great great grandparents you say? what years are we talking about, the mid 19th century?

Thanks to this forum I learnt about how American health system works - that's another thing which put me off.

i'd love to hear your convoluted interpretation of the american health care system. my guess, it will be about as accurate as the rest of your interpretations of the USA.

Several years ago there was a case where parents couldn't go visit their terminally ill daughter in USA, as far as I remember, because they couldn't get the visa.

I'm not going to make any grand assumptions but let's face it....if we had the whole story, you might think differently about the decision that was made to refuse them visas.

as it turns out this American Dream or Polish idea of what it was never existed

this is hor$eshit and you know it.

poles left mostly because poland was a damn disaster and america offered the best chance to succeed.

You won’t find many believers anymore

no? then why do they keep coming from all over the world? how long can a country lie without anyone catching on? you really think they all come here for the mere fact that we advertise well?

tell you what: go ask the 10 million + poles living in the USA right now whether they want to move back to Holeintheground Zdroj or Crapfarmtown Gora to work and retire in and see which country they "believe" in now, still to this day.

you're either blindly jealous or just completely clueless. or both.

FACE IT POLAND, a lot of your people left for America and many of them are leading a life far better than you ever could have offered them in Poland. Stop arguing it.

This forum has no concept of calling a spade a spade. Thanks PennBoy for stepping up to the plate.

Not a chance, not very appealing prospect. I worked with few Yanks before and if that’s what one can expected there, well let’s just say it’s not a very pleasant work environment.

absolutely positively subjective. your opinion, your personal experience.

I thought about going to USA, but the fact that you have to organize everything before going there to get the visa is a big deterrent for me - I'm not the package holiday type...

It can be a royal pain without blood relatives there to petition for you but it can be done.

If you work for a company that has its headquarters or daughter companies in the USA, you can go there on a work visa. The company can do this for you in a very short period of time. Once you're in-country for a few years, you should be able to find options open to you to stay there for as long as you want.

OR, while you're there, marry an American and the rest is history. Fastest way to US citizenship is through marriage. Exactly 33 months after marrying an American (if you maintain residency in the USA over that period of time) you can apply for citizenship. There are over 300 million in the USA, I'm sure you could find a good one ;)

it would be replaced by total ignorance of other races. you can't know people if you've never met them, sat down and spoken with them, lived with them/around them. oddly enough, the same phenomenon happens in America when kids grow up in entirely white towns. you could realistically grow up in certain parts of the midwest and not once meet and speak with a black person and when they go to college out of state and suddenly are around them, they don't even know how to handle themselves. now imagine that situation with a total language barrier if a large mass of them moved to Poland.

the lack of racial tension

haha, i couldn't help but point out how silly that is, comparing racial tension in america (the biggest melting pot in the world) to Poland, the whitest god damn place in the world where 99% of all of it's population is the same, speaks the same language natively, etc.

Tell you what, we'll give you 1,000,000 of our African Americans and get back to me in a year about how the racial tension is doing in Poland. ha!

because majority of them simply don't give a ****.

I beg to differ. My students constantly complained about it as well as many people on this forum.

Even though it's been kicked around a million times on this forum, the OP's question is still a valid one.

You claim that anybody who hasn't been living in the USA for at least four years cannot comment really on American issues.

Stop making stuff up. I never specified any amount of time. In fact, I think your post should be removed because you're simply lying.

Life / Do I have to do something to start receiving mail in Poland? (moved from the US) [33]

Odd, what makes you think they weren't stolen by the USPS or others?

being that when it comes from me you tend to have a problem with it, i took the liberty of simply posting this here, it pretty much sums up my stance:

because mail comes from lots of countries and it ends up 'different' when it gets here.

when those other countries send mail to countries other than Poland it's ok.

that tells me that the problem is in Poland and i have no problem saying that some Polish postal workers are thieving twats.

I've never, in my entire life, had anything tampered with or stolen from me by USPS. Ever. I've never heard of it happening to anyone else I know either.

Somehow, some way, when I go to Poland, it happens all the time. Oh, and other people say the same damn thing. As a matter of fact, when my mother in law realized that we simply didn't have the earings in the package she sent us, her immediate response was, "wiesz co!.....na pewno ktos ukradl to na poczcie," and went on to say how common it is for poles to steal stuff at their post offices. My father in law nodded his head in agreement.

Say what you want, Poles have a bad habit of getting sticky fingers at their post offices.

USA, Canada / Do you speak English? Have you lived in America? New LOVE/HATE list......... [144]

Exactly the dumb down of U.S. has been completed, the people do not think for themselves they just watch the stupid TV and repeat the garbage and propaganda that is given to them as their own opinion.

sure, plenty of americans are guilty of this. my point being it's no different in Poland. very rarely do I meet a Pole that has even the slightest idea what life is really like in the USA.

I can't say I chalk this up entirely to the educational systems though. I think it's more of a cultural issue. Most countries like to hate the USA and simply find it easier and more enjoyable to join the bandwagon. It reminds me of the fact that so many americans are prejudiced towards the french. they don't even know why they dislike the french, they just hate them because somebody told them that they didn't want to help us fight a war once upon a time, or something to that effect. any of you remember "freedom fries"? hating is contagious and makes for good table talk and a lot of people just fall right in line with the hate fest so that they're part of the team. that, and it's generally easier to just agree with people in your social circle.

American people in most cases have rather poor knowledge not just about Poland but they don't known much about Europe ether

and how sir, do you know that? 4 years in Poland and I'm not qualified enough to make the same claim about Polish people? how many years in country do you have to spend to get that right?

who to blame? propaganda? filtering the information? I don't know.

Well, I know.

It's because it's not a priority. Nobody in America cares about what Poland did today, or Czech Republic, or Slovakia or Scotland. It's not really taught in schools and people are fine with it. It's just culture here.

Independent media can give you relatively objective views, you would be surprise

i wouldn't be surprised. i lived in poland for 4 straight years. i talked to polish people, in english and their language, and they for the most part don't know a damn thing about the USA. no different than Americans not knowing $hit about Poland.

just sayin'.

Life / Do I have to do something to start receiving mail in Poland? (moved from the US) [33]

You may want to re read Fuzz's post. The mail was sent FROM Poland TO the US.

you may want to do the same.

I mentioned the package my mother sent me to Poland (that never made it) and the package I sent myself to Poland from the US (with a huge hole punched in it).

it doesn't matter. when the Polish post office is involved, it's ghetto style.

Life / Do I have to do something to start receiving mail in Poland? (moved from the US) [33]

Didn't want to start a new thread so I randomly picked this one.

Polish mail continues to prove itself to be absolutely GHETTO.

My inlaws mailed us some stuff for christmas in one of those padded press and seal bags. While skyping, we opened it up in front of them, pulled out the few things that were inside, whereas then they asked us, "where are the earings?"

What earings.

Apparently my mother in law put earings in there for my wife, in an Apart box, and they got picked off somewhere along the way. The package showed no signs of tampering. Looks like someone peeled the bag open, pulled out the earings and re-sealed it.

Hell, at least this time some of it made it across the pond. My first year in Poland, my mother mailed me out a bunch of things for my birthday, never even made it. Gone.

2 years later, I was in the US, bought a bunch of stuff and mailed it to myself in Poland, even used a Polish mail service in New Jersey, and by the time it got to me it had a big hole punched in it. Nothing was stolen (no expensive items in it, I was just mailing food products I couldn't find in Poland) but if there had been, you can be sure some or all of it would have been gone.

This is the 21st century Poland......and you still have your mail workers routinely stealing $hit from people.

A bit of a puzzle then

Decide what stance you want to take. You agreed with me about how rare it is to find Americans that have been to Krakow. You specifically said, "No point looking for a needle in a haystack."

I AGREE with you, and you say, "A bit of a puzzle then, and I'm rather surprised at that." Surprised at......uhmmm......yourself?

What in the world are you talking about.

Meathead wrote:

There's a woman in my state who sells polish pottery. And it sells.

Sure, but we've talked about their pottery to death. Yes yes yes, Polish pottery sells, but this guy doesn't want to open a pottery shop so......what else?

- High quality, low cost products.

I don't see this in Poland excluding maybe some food (assuming it's food made in Poland).

- Crossroads of Europe

geographically, ok. but as far as realistically traveling through poland, well, you wouldn't want to rely on poland's road systems or run down trains to go long distances north, south, east and west. nobody wants to travel through poland to get anywhere. not even poles want to drive on their own roads and "highways".

- Poland's "sea to sky" - I would push this concept heavily. Everything is here - lakes, sea, mountains, meadows, etc. All of it is also big and important enough to be worth marketing - Mazury/Baltic/Tatry/Wielkopolska/etc. You can also include the cities in this - Krakow, Warsaw and Wroclaw have "it".

which poses an interesting question. it would be interesting to hear from those that have lived in europe for years and years, yet have never been to poland. or, people from the USA (since the OP is looking to sell this stuff in NYC) absolutely never travel to Poland. time and time again, when i talk to americans, if they've been to europe, it's always england, spain, italy, germany, switzerland, maybe czech republic.....but NOBODY has been to Poland. poland's image, whatever that might be to them, deters them from visiting.
