Work / Some cold, hard facts about teaching in Poland for newbies [101]

Are you on about state schools/daytime schools?

I'm referring to state schools (public school systems in the United States.) Supposedly, team teaching may be more cost-effective. Students who are more advanced in some subjects, may become a little bored. While others may have a tendency of falling behind, due to lack of knowledge or interest in a particular subject. These scenarios may exist, when there is a large age difference between students.

Some cold, hard facts about teaching in Poland for newbies

Do Polish schools include teaching structures with team classes, consisting of more than one grade? I observed my friend's classroom the other day. The classroom had groups of both 4th & 5th grade students.

USA, Canada / What Polish Spirit would you bring back to the States? [13]

you can find plenty of Lech in the USA

Unfortunately, not in Southern California. Unless I want to pay an arm & a leg for delivery costs. Some of the Polish festivals may have it though.

Food / Polish food at home or out? [57]

Polish food at home or out?

I'd kill to have a Polish restaurant located closer to home. The only semi-Polish restaurant is located about 15 miles from my home. They're only open a few hours a week, til 3:00 pm Mon-Fri. These are the hours when I'm usually at work.

When I get a mean craving for Polish food, I usually have to settle for a Polish sandwich with sauerkrat, from Der Wienerschnitzel :(

Fyi, Carl's Jr restaurants are now serving breakfast biscuits, with a sausage link. Tastes a bit like kielbasa. Okay stuff, for when you got a Polish food itch.

Life / How do you celebrate Easter in Poland? [29]

oh yes, there's lots of chocolate eggs.

They'll be even better tomorrow, when they're half price! Gotta love those after Easter candy sales!

Life / Rules of Etiquette in Poland [22]

I learned to adapt depending on the environment

Public restaurants are where you see some humdingers:

I've seen a busboy play pocket pool, while cleaning dirty tables.
Also saw a mechanic gnawing a pork chop bone, as though he were a Pit Bull!

Life / Polish Hoarders? [42]

We sold some of the antiques for a pretty penny after distributing some to family members.
So don't be too quick to dismiss saving as just hoarding.

You've hit the nail on the head! That's why I'll be hitting the swap meet and yard sales at 7:00 a.m. this weekend :)

Life / Polish Hoarders? [42]

They try to draw a link between her childhood of scarcity and her adult inability to disitnguish between garbage and valuables.

You've got a good point there. It seems like some older people, who've grown up in the great depression, eventually become pack rats. Their reasoning... some day you may be in need a particular object. So... they hold on to junk until hell freezes over; or when it's finally sold at an estate sale, after they pass away...

In the US, people who keep everything in their house

Haha, this is so true of many people in the US. I like attending estate sales. Some of the homes that I go to are practically busting at the seams. I need to wear gloves, while sorting through piles of junk, hoping to discover a lost antique treasure :)

USA, Canada / Travelling to Poland from the U.S. on a expired Passport [43]

Would the United States really allow re-entry on just the Green Card as well?

I'm a citizen of the United States. I had gone to Mexico for a one-day visit. By accident, I had forgotten to bring my passport along with me. At the border, I had shown a border agent a couple alternate forms of identification. He also verified that I had a valid passport by looking online. He smiled and told me be more careful next time. The whole process took approximately 5 minutes. I guess being a female had worked to my advantage!

History / Help for my graduation thesis (about Auschwitz-Birkenau) [6]

why people nowadays visit these kind of locations

I visited Treblinka, in remembrance of the many people who had lost their precious lives in the death camp. Sadly, we can't change history. Yet, we may learn from the experiences of others, who had lived before us.
