USA, Canada / General differences between Poland and the USA? [184]

So it's another difference. In Poland if you work on contract and get sick you go to you GP and if he decides you shouldn't work he/she gives you L4- sick leave. As long as you need it. No limits here. Although you get paid less then.

USA, Canada / General differences between Poland and the USA? [184]

Oh, we are not talking about Christmas and such. We are talking about some paid time off work for vacations. Full time workers get 21 days a year I think (no energy to check

). When you get it is a consensus between what employee and amployer wants.

In Poland if you work on contract (even part time) your paid holidays are counted since day 1. The more you work the more holidays you get. Of course part time will get less days off. Employer has to either give you the time off or pay you extra for that time. After a year you have full holidays granted.

News / Shops in Poland to be closed on Sunday? [208]

How it's seen doesn't matter. Our laws are clear. And as Delph pointed out- it's nothing recent. Anyway- end of the off- topic. Back to shops closed on Sunday.

Life / Freedom of religion v animal rights in Poland? [38]

Delph- take WP comment that it's not the place for it. 2 thread goes into that topic. I like this discussion but I would prefer it in some special thread

News / Shops in Poland to be closed on Sunday? [208]

There is the law, of course, but I guess as the example of Biedronka shows laws can be broken:

They can be broken (as any law can) but for that there are consequences. There is a reason why Biedronka in now one of the best supermarket employer in my town.

News / Shops in Poland to be closed on Sunday? [208]

The constitution is from 1997 so not so early after the end of PRL. And besides- we had referendum- so most Poles accepted it- sorry, but you'll have to deal with it.

News / PO-PiS again neck and neck [248]

I don't really believe in polls. They are mostly useless. Especially the ones made on order. The only way to know who'll win is to wait for the day after elections

News / Shops in Poland to be closed on Sunday? [208]

Maybe it's because of supermarkets forcing people to work 7 days a week or sth (there was that case of Biedronka, I don't remember what was that all about anymore). They probably picked Sunday because it's traditionally considered a non-working day.

In that case they acted against Polish labour law anyway.

But I guess you had some other day free of work?

In supermarkets they have days off as well.

Poland is not officially a secular country. When was this stated?

In our constitution

News / Shops in Poland to be closed on Sunday? [208]

I can't understand why ppl are so concerned with shops being open on Sunday. So many jobs require ppl to work on Sunday and noone complains. So why shop assistants? I worked on Sunday and I can't remember any trauma connected with that expirience.

News / Shops in Poland to be closed on Sunday? [208]

Hm, I won't be crying if they close shops on Sunday however I think it's not a good idea. It creates work places and doesn't really harm anyone.

News / First Face Transplant in US led by Polish Surgeon [10]

Interesting- Polish media report the same thing.

It's good the ministry agreed to transport dead body in the helicopter- there is law against it but someone in the ministry used their head.

USA, Canada / General differences between Poland and the USA? [184]

Also what kids in,poland never go on their phones during a quiz or test??

In my times we prepared ściągawki (cheating sheets) that could have been slipped to the pocket or under your test when the teacher approached your desk. My parents encouraged me to prepere them ( but not to use them!!!) because in order to create good ściągawka/ ściąga you had to orginise the material and re-write it so you basically learnt by that.

Phones are much to big and visible to be useful :)

I don't agree and we have many proves here on PF that learning Polish is possible. It amazes me how many foreigners know Polish and they are great at it!

History / Khazars and their crimes in the Slavic lands of Poland [63]

Hm, we can't argue that there always were places where ppl were more free to practise their religion while in others they were persecuted. But what I read in those articles suggested the Khazars empire belonged rather to the former. I don't deny they had some dark things going but it seems it was better there than in other places.

We can't expect any country to accept religions that are disrupting society. Now we just call them sects. Of course it's a little bit different now but still...

If the thanks are adressed to me- it's nothing really.

Edit:

Weren't the Khazars converted to Judaism? If so are they considered to be in the blood line of Abraham?

From what I read in those links they were converted. I can't answer to the second part of your question.

Thank you for the links but they do not prove the point made by OP Quite the contrary- from the Britannica link:

"Whatever the case may be, religious tolerance was practiced in the Khazar empire, and paganism continued to flourish among the population."

Travel / Best way to travel from Wroclaw to Berlin [4]

Hm, I only know about regular trains by ICE PKP but nothing more. If there is a promotion the ticket costs 30 or 40 euro. No idea about sleeper coaches.

Language / What is the meaning of swięto państwowe? [4]

Or does this mean national holiday?

Exactly

Is it correct to use this phrase for labour day?

To some extend since it's a national holiday but labour day is "Święto Pracy"
