Life / WHY DO POLES USE ENGLISH WORDS IN CONVERSATION? [396]

But we are discussing this:

and I've never heard it being used that way, hence, why I'm asking native speakers of English on here if they have any experience with this particular usage.

Life / WHY DO POLES USE ENGLISH WORDS IN CONVERSATION? [396]

That's when someone will come up with a Polish equivalent.

still waiting for them to come up with an equivalent for "znokautowac" and "boarding", just to name a few.

Downshifting is a relatively new word even in English. It's concise, and describes a new social phenomenon.

a new social phenomenon? i don't get it.

In American English, to downshift is used to describe shifting gears in a mechanical device like a car, motorcycle, bicycle, etc., and it has been used for as long as I can remember.

I have never heard an American or any native speaker of English say, "Geeze, I really need to downshift, I'm going to exhaust myself this week." Of the native UK/Australia/New Zealand English speakers out there, have you ever heard "downshifting" being used in this way?

USA, Canada / Moved back from Canada to Poland:). Here are the reasons why. [868]

Winter jackets in October?! No way.

if you're referring to the hours between 12:00 p.m. and 3:00 p.m.......it doesn't count.

I wonder what country he was living in, I really do.

Then you must be also wondering what country these people live/lived in as well:

Just streamed some Polish TV, there were 4-5 people talking, and the title at the bottom of the screen was, "Downshifting - Chce wolniej zyc"

and THEN, in conversation, a guy said, ".....downshiftowalem......".

and of course, shortly after, "......duzo deadline'ow....."

worse and worse, folks.

Food / Coffee in Poland: cheap and undrinkable / expensive and good [89]

Also, I've known Poles who won't let their kids eat ice-cream - some nonsense about it being bad for the throat.

hahahaha, that should go under that "Polish Myths" thread. one of many funny Polish myths about health. they're convinced that drinking something too cold, especially in the winter, can give you a sore throat. man, if i had a nickel for every time i was told that. My grandmother used to say the same thing and she was from old school poland, i guess that's where today's generations get it from.

Can you count properly?

By mid september you can forget about t-shirts and by october, winter jackets. you will not get relief from this till May and I've seen some cold, crummy May's.

October, November, December, January, February, March, April, May. that's 8. if we cut off half of October and half of May, we've still got 7 and you surely will not be able to cut below 6.

Half a year of shite weather in Poland. Prosze bardzo.

I'm curious what are the "little things", which questioning about you avoided so much.

The best way to satisfy your curiosity would be to come live and work in the USA, Toronto, Vancouver....and then move back to Poland. After a few months of being asked questions about the USA/Canada, you'd understand.

Until then, why would I subject myself again to something I just said I always tried to avoid?

USA, Canada / Moved back from Canada to Poland:). Here are the reasons why. [868]

In Poland, where I live and you don't, it is not as easy as living in Canada. It is the little things of which you don't know because you don't live here.

Join the club. I spent four years trying to avoid questions about America while I was living in Poland for this very reason. It pisses people off. What else can you do? Just lie about it?

Polish winter sucks by any means.

Indeed. And it's 6 months long. Half your life in Poland, you walk outside and go, "this sucks".

x-mas was a typical Polish x-mas : too much food, too much rest and bad TV programs.

HAHAHAHA, yes! Couldn't have said it better myself.

So Aphro, when are you moving back to Canada?

USA, Canada / Do many Polish people in America hate Americans? [592]

"In 2007, MSF-USA raised $152.1 million and sent 200 aid workers to work overseas."

How much did yourcountry give in 2007?

How much did any other country give in 2007? It's not about who owns it or founded it, it's who's footing the bill. That's what we're talking about here.

Hell, even Brad Pitt and AJ donated a cool million last year.

"New York, June 11, 2007 - The international medical humanitarian organization Doctors Without Borders/Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) today expressed its gratitude for a gift of $9,136,000from Bill and Sue Gross of Laguna Beach, California, generated from the sale at auction of a portion of Mr. Gross's rare and extensive stamp collection."

Sandra Bullock donated 1 million last year.

The list of huge donations to MSF from US citizens goes on and on.

and who could forget Mr. Gates if we're talking about donating money to foreign countries:

Melinda Moree met plenty of naysayers who dismissed the prospects of a malaria vaccine. Then she encountered Bill Gates.

No one had developed a human vaccine against a parasite like malaria before, and the monetary incentives simply did not exist for pharmaceutical companies to develop drugs targeted at poor children. Development would require cooperation among scientists, drug companies, health groups and international governments -- an alliance so large it didn't seem possible, she recalled someone telling Gates.

"Of course it is," Gates countered, according to Moree, now director of the PATH Malaria Vaccine Initiative in Seattle, which along with other groups has received nearly $500 millionfrom the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation to develop, test, manufacture and eventually distribute a malarial vaccine.....The co-founder of Microsoft has given $25.9 billionof his personal wealth to the foundation and has pledged to give billions of dollars more to devote to several dozen specific programs, such as minority scholarships, clean water initiatives, updated computer systems in libraries and the development of a variety of vaccines.

And to cover our own tails, we've got American Red Cross. But that's obviously a bunch of a-holes in it for the money.

Donated American cash changes the world whether you like it or not.

USA, Canada / Do many Polish people in America hate Americans? [592]

How pathetic, Yank talking out of his ar** as usual, I guess you haven't heard of licensed international version or what that means.

you know what I've heard of? turning on Polish TV at night and every single show is a total rip off of an American/UK TV show. admit it and cut the crap.

You need to be honest with yourself, where ever you go chaos and exploitation follows. As for the volunteers the whole world knows how that works loads and loads of them taking a vacation on Uncle Sam's dime borrowed from China. The amount of men, material as well as funds flowing that endeavor is truly astonishing but can you honestly call it foreign help? I doubt that. To land money you need to have it.

yeah, the typical response. "they do it for money". i guess that's every American's curse. no matter what you do, no matter how selfless it may be, it's always looked at as a ploy for financial gain. no matter, we all know it yet we keep on giving our time/money.

Plus, I never saw a thread by Poles saying similar things to USA people.

oh that's genius. you've never seen a thread, "If Poland is so bad, why move here?". hahahaha. yes. yes, as a matter of fact,

i'd put money on it that you've never seen anything like that.

Yes. In many ways it is (a $hithole), but that's because it was dirt poor, a situation that is changing dramatically for the better. Something that cannot be said for the US, its only way is down. It will get very ugly there.

This comment speaks volumes about not only peterweg but so many other posters.

Be happy and remember, every nation respects themselves ... and dont make a fool of yourself thinking that we are dying to come to you.

Atleast for Poles...

Pure BS. What a stupid statement.

The USA has a hell of a lot more to offer people aside from just money.

I for one will never understand how someone can hate a country that much, as if the USA has done something terrible to Poland.

This thread is about America, keep it that way!

delphiandomine: Doesn't look so bad to me...

Detroit was the motor city, a capital of capitalism with a population of 5m+. The neglect of Stalowa Wola is not even in the same league compared to Detroit. Considering you have only experienced the recession for 3 years now some parts of the city look like 20 years after its nuclear demise after WWIII where no one lifted a finger to rebuild it. Where’s that prosperity you speak of? Other parts of US don’t fair much better.

I am soooo tempted to find some random photo of Detroit depicting it as a nice place, like some wealthy person's back yard garden or something.....

4. Many countries, but particularly Canada, have had a better, more secure life because America stood eyeball to eyeball with the USSR and the Russians blinked first.

Very few people, aside from Americans, understand this or refuse to admit it. Nice one, adersm.

Our music for example is silly.

that depends what kind of music you're referring too. Polish rap? yeah, it's beyond silly.

I think that simply the sound of Polish language is silly for you.

in the beginning it did, as it does for most foreigners.
