News / Smoking ban in Polish bars and restaurants (AT LAST!) [400]

you can expect small pubs to lose quite a bit of business to large chain affairs

AND

I will definitely go out more often now :)

I just put two opinions against each other and I don't think my comment is necessary here, Convex ;)

This may not be the general trend though.

Well, other countries' example have that imposed an actually more strict ban do not support your fears at all.

News / Giant Jesus Rising in Świebodzin ( Tallest in world ) [323]

But instead of Stalin they put Jesus.

- So basically nothing changed except the first a guy was in uniform and with a stache, and now this guy is with full beard and in a robe.

This statue is actually a huge mechanical robot that will wreak havoc in downtown Tokyo but first Świebodzin.
The second coming is here and he's gonna kick arse!

Jesus is showing everyone with his left hand which way to drive to Gorzow Wielkopolski and where Swiebodzin is with his right. It's a reakin' huge road sign.

  • Is that what you meant, SeanBM?

  • Jesuszilla!

I can't wait for it, pubs are so much better without smoke

Totally agree. This new law is not that good for either sides [non-smokers and addicts, as I like to call them;) ] but hopefully it will work for the best...

Travel / Insights about winter in Poland. Polish winter during holidays as charming as spring? [21]

are ppl more cautious then or is it same old dangerous Polish driving?

Yes, same thing, but with snow, mud and slippery roads without proper safety planning. Also, same drivers;). Watch out.
Anyway, till January there will rather be no snow, just rain and cold, followed by freaking freezing & snow & ice in Jan, Feb and March. That's how it has usually been last years, more or less.

I read somewhere that Polish brown bears are currently hunting alot more meat as opposed to eating berries and insects...bear with me (no pun)......it is relevant...
The scientist say this is because our furry friends have sensed a long winter this season.
So if the cute little bears have got it right its gonna be cold and looooong.

Maybe they needed to switch from wild berries to meat because they got Montezuma's revenge. I wouldn't draw far fetched concludsions such as long-term weather predictions, on the basis of bears' diet shifts;)

Law / Have a Polish drivers licence for one year. And 16 points already. How bad is it? [8]

The lucky number is 21. When you reach it, you're done with driving and must repeat exam (or if you have a longer break - also a driving course).

But before that, you can reduce the number of penalty points by signing up for a special course about safety and road accidents (if nothing changed from the time I heard about it a few years ago it costed around 300 PLN). This course takes away 6 points. No more than two (if my sources were good) such courses can be taken in a year. Also if you manage to drive responsibly (to which I strongly urge you) for a year - the points are erased. Poland has badly designed and poor quality roads so the only thing you can count on is you driving safely bearing those facts in mind.

Law / Threatened to serve papers if I don't remove a review about a renting company in Poland [62]

There is a motorcycle klub in Wroclaw called Gremium mc...i am a member of the Poznan chapter of this klub , we are all brothers..they are bad boys...enough said...

I was thinking more along the lines of a bit of advice from a few big ugly scarey ones...

hahah, don't go this way, as it may work against Stu, it may be easy to say that they were threaened by you after all...

I can see the motorbikers all parking just outside the car rental, going in... pretending to rent cars :D

USA, Canada / Giving up canadian citizenship for a Polish one? Cant be true! [20]

You don't need to resign from any citizenship while verifying if you have a Polish one. Just file for a verifying procedure and you'll soon know whether you have Polish citizenship or not. Then you can apply for passport etc. I don't know your details, but just a Polish granfather is not enough to be verified positive. You have to have more.

Law / Threatened to serve papers if I don't remove a review about a renting company in Poland [62]

It will take them at least 6 months to bring the case to Court and then it will be thrown out -.

- not necessarily. Why do you think it would take them so long to file the case? And read my post above - they would not throw it out usually but proceed eeven if it doesn't make sense. I've been there.

produce a sick note.

- Why do you advise to break the law? I don't think that Stu has to use such methods.

say you have had to leave the country

- that's not an excuse and it can easily make the judge biased i.e. when he starts to avoid the trials. It can work on the favour of this car rental company too, and also the lawyer would have to show up and then the trial would be without him. He can loose a lot doing so. Don't advise if you are not sure.

you are sick again

- again, not legal and not the way to do it - he is not a culprit and it's not a criminal charge so WHY do it? The judge can get pissed and make that trial without his presence as his representative would have to show up. If the representative doesn't show up (not all lawyers would agree to do it just for the sake of doing this;) ) only then it would be postponed.

You have done nothing wrong

- exactly. And there is nothing to avoid.

Law / Threatened to serve papers if I don't remove a review about a renting company in Poland [62]

Ok, here's what I think:
1. Yes, they can sue you, just as you can sue them. But: they'd have to prepare the lawsuit, hire a lawyer, pay for it and also demand some amount of money (in a civil lawsuit) from you for the damage you've done by your review. So they'd have to estimate this damage to their business and justify it later in the trial. Also when they sue you for money, they need to pay 8 % of the amount they sue (if I'm not mistaken here). So I don't see it happening. Call their bluff if you really want, don't get scared.

By the way, where did you post this review?

2. It is not that common.
3. Everyone can sue everyone, the reviewers and journalists are sued too (there's press/media law act in this case...) but everything depends on a case. Imagine this car rental company proving in court that your review actually contributed to their loss in businnes terms. Hard to prove. On the other hand they may argue that it is defamation. But if the review was honest and true... and perhaps you have some proofs (e.g. email history with dates etc., witnesses), then you should tell them to bu**er off and work on their quality of service.

Also, bear in mind the fact that Polish courts, happen to take a very long time to solve even simple cases, and also the verdicts can be surprise. Then you have to appeal, wait again, and then demand justice;). The choice is yours.

News / What's the stupidest question asked about Poland? [414]

Is Poland in central or eastern Europe?

Actually not that stupid question.
Geographically or geopolitically? Or economically?
The answer would change accordingly, hence it is sometimes CEE and sometimes CE.
Strange.

Life / Best Pay as you go company in Poland? [10]

What would be the cost of a cheap polish pay/go phone with sim card

- prices start from about 100 zloty for a new phone, e.g. cheapest nokia models

With Orange people can send me free sms from skype

- just checked it. it works but it's so long time to send anything that whole idea of instant massaging by sms or skype goes to hell. I won't use this, only if I have too much time. I don't know about other providers and this service, however Orange does not support PTT (or MIM) service whereas other do I think.

Life / Is Poland split into two religions: catholicism and non-believers? [103]

Obviously not Christian

Should I take it as an insult? ;)))
Would you blame me for thinking straight with my own brain instead of following someone's stories? I have too little herding instinct to follow what anyone with a strange hat says.

Life / Best Pay as you go company in Poland? [10]

So any network is fine. My recommendation: some pre paid option at ERA, Heyah or Play.
I've had huge problems with Orange and their complete lack of quality service so I would never recommend it to anyone.

Law / Polish Citizenship for a foreigner whose parents was born in Poland [174]

General rule: if at least one of your parents has had from the time where you were born Polish citizenship and did not resign from it officially - then you can verify your citizenship by a procedure in a consulate or any Urzad Wojewodzki. Takes about a month.

News / Smoking ban in Polish bars and restaurants (AT LAST!) [400]

So you're all for a smoking-ban, but you choose to go to the bars where smoking is allowed because the non-smoking places aren't working for you? Where will you go for a drink when smoking is banned everywhere then?

- To the same bar, only that it'll be smoke free. Judging on other countries they will not go bankrupt.

Like? More stressed people?

- I heard cocaine is even better for stressing out. Would you like a sniff?

Let's take America for example (With the full smoking-ban and all.) 596.490 Americans are expected to die of cancer this year, and about 178.947 Americans are expected to die of cancer attributable to smoking. (30%) So why smokers are in a cancer-risk group beats me, since 70% of all cancer cases are non-smokers.

All right then, you convinced me. Smoking is not deadly. In fact it is healthier to smoke than to breathe all that cr@ppy air. I have made a resolution to start smoking from tomorrow. I'll start from half a pack a day to develop this harmless addiction asap.

I don't see any campaigns about all those wonderful EU numbers in our food. (Funded by our governments, that is.)

- Maybe you watch too much telly and not read enough, I dnon't know. I saw campaigns in media in Poland and rest of Europe sometimes.

Are you absolutely sure that fuel exhaust for example, doesn't contain any of those condensed substances?

Dude, seriuusly! If you put your mouth to this exhaust pipe and take a deep breath it will be more harmless I guess. But... who does that?! You on the other hand stick to an opinion that inhaling from a cigarette, which is also active smoking, is far less poisonous than breathing "polluted air". Seriously?!

Well, you don't have to wash what you're not wearing.

- I'll become the Ugly Naked Guy from the Friends series hahah.
