Language / How long to to learn Polish? In hours? [64]

With the invention of mobile texting many people have lost the ability to converse with others using full sentences and correct grammar. They have no ability to hold a thoroughly researched 'discussion' as their knowledge of many subjects is extremely limited due to their lack of education. Their answer to everything is to insult their opponent and use vulgar language.

It takes years and years of learning to learn Polish up to the standard required for say University entrance exams.
f you want to go into a shop and buy items, your basis Polish may suffice.
If you want to go to a Government department and arrange something you need an extensive vocabulary.
If you want to discuss intricate financial details or IT problems at work - you need a good standard of the language (whether Polish or English or other).

It all depends on what you want.

Love / How much Polish guy cares about ladys' age? I'm from Japan. [32]

Each guy likes what he likes - some like cute women, some like intelligent women, some like tall slim, others small and large.
The fact of being divorced may matter if you ever wanted to get married in church in Poland. For no other reason.

Love / How do I find out if someone is a bigamist? [20]

As far as I know 'bigamy' is still punishable in law. If a person who is legally married, marries another legally - they are guilty of bigamy. The first wife should create a stink about it. Best people are the Police. Even if you find out that he has married - it is the Police who have to bring a case against him. You can gather sufficient evidence to prove bigamy - but he could end up in prison.

Study / INDIAN student applied at Warsaw University of Technology in Poland with some delicate questions [22]

The problem will always be the same. What prospects do you have after paying to study at this Uni?
If the answer is NONE, then don't bother studying.
It is unfair, I know, but studying at a well-known Uni will open doors. Studying at others will not.
People will always ask you why you chose this and not that Uni? Saying that it was cheaper - will not get you far.

Work / What salary can be asked at IBM Poland? [67]

Search on this forum. Find suitable apartments/flats to rent. It all depends on whether you will cook meals at home bought from local produce or go to restaurants every day to eat. Be very wary of signing anything to do with your flat. Take a older Polish person with you when you look at properties. Get to know every detail of costs before you sign.

Love / How do I find out if someone is a bigamist? [20]

To my mind, his Irish wife should go to the Police and state what she believes has happened. The Irish Police would then contact the English Police and the man would be unmasked. Obviously she needs details which will enable the Police to do their job.

Food / Pumpkin and Rhubarb in Kraków [15]

What would make you think that you cannot buy these items throughout the year? You just need to know where to go.

Love / Do I move from UK to Poland or not? (I met a Polish lady) [21]

Anyone reading my post would have understood that I was being 'ironic'.

It would be interesting to take a poll of how many English men who fall in love with a Polish lady still remain with her in Poland after say about 5 years......

Love / Do I move from UK to Poland or not? (I met a Polish lady) [21]

Aha, so you'll be a kept man. There are at least a million men who would change places with you.
You sit at home, you get up when you want, do what you want, watch TV, go fishing, go shopping.....and she goes out to work, comes home and cooks dinner.

For me - the ideal life for a man.

Love / Do I move from UK to Poland or not? (I met a Polish lady) [21]

The question you need to ask yourself is what will you do when in Poland. What chances are there of getting a good job, good accommodation, good standard of living.

It all depends on the skills you have to offer any prospective employers....or are you in the extremely fortunate position that your lady will support you both...

Language / How many words does the Polish language have? [30]

There is not a person in the world that has the capability of knowing and using all the words that exist in their own language. The thing is to learn enough to do whatever you want with them. Some want to hold conversations, some academic discussions, some even more...but no one, no one ever uses all the available words.

Work / What is the average accounting/auditing salary in Poland? [42]

No one can say what any specific firm will pay you. You have to negotiate - but don't sell yourself short. Have a well-prepared CV and send it out with notification of the type of salary you expect.

Real Estate / Tax on UK rental income, while residency in Poland [11]

Yes, you are correct about the UK personal allowance, but this only applies up to the point in which GB is a member of the EU. After that - different rules will apply.

Work / What is the average accounting/auditing salary in Poland? [42]

The best way to test the market, is to apply for positions in Poland in the area that you specialize in. It is one thing to be told the salary should be this or that and quite another the salary that a firm is willing to offer you.

Try the Big 4 at first, they may have openings, other than that apply for everything going to get an overview of the type of salary offered.

Real Estate / Tax on UK rental income, while residency in Poland [11]

I will add, that if you are formally a non-resident (of UK) you are not entitled to any UK tax allowance. You will be entitled to the measly personal allowance offered in Poland. Double and triple check what costs you can offset against any income earned.

Law / Moving to Poland and start a business [16]

Your NIP and PESEL remain the same. However, tou may need to start the process of 'zameldowanie' from the beginning, as before you only had a 'temporary' zameldowanie (residency permit).

UK, Ireland / Sold UK home and moved to Poland. Any due tax? [7]

Any money invested in the bank is subject to 19 percent tax. It would be better to use the money to buy things.
You will not be subject to any taxes in Poland on the money you brought into the country. Your best bet would be to buy property (in cash) in Poland. And if you live in that property longer than 5 years (all documented) you will not have to pay tax on the profits from the sale of this property.

Law / I was fined for not having a tram ticket in Poland. How does this affect me? [68]

If you don't pay your fine, they will catch you and then they will come after you. I don't understand how someone does not buy a ticket and then thinks they can get away with it. The firm employing the ticket inspectors (who are called 'kanary' in Polish) get a percentage of all fines, and they have to catch a number of people without a ticket per month as this is in their contract with the tram companies. It is not worth it.

I can only go off the view of the learned Professor who has this opinion. This was shown yesterday in Interia.pl and the article is still there.

News / Ethnic tensions erupt in Ełk, Poland [180]

The latest news is that the authorities now believe that the fault lies with young people playing violent video games. The aggression which they experience (playing for a long time) spills over into real life and they vent their frustration caused by the violent games on anyone they see.

Life / Polish Doctors refuse to take European Health Insurance Card [8]

If you are a visitor - i.e. are on holiday in Poland:

1. Any private doctor will see you for 100 pln for a consultation. He will then prescribe whatever you need and you have to pay the full price at the chemist (apteka). You can have your blood tests carried out privately - cost approx 200 pln.

2. The European card is only for cases of 'emergency'(i.e. accident, heart attack, asthma attack - anything that might be considered an emergency) you will get the same treatment in the same hospital as any other Pole. The cost of any treatment is then recouped from your own country. This is clearly stated on the website where you can read what actually it covers you for.

3. You should have holiday cover insurance in cases you need to get back to your own country or have to have private treatment which tour own insurance should pay..

4. If you live and work in Poland and are paying into ZUS - you have the same rights as any other Pole working in Poland.

Language / Polish Village - German to English translation... [11]

You will have a problem having this translated, as the language has changed somewhat since the 1700's. You will need to read this word by word and use very early dictionaries.

Language / Help with alphabet letters [5]

There are websites where each letter of the Polish alphabet is sounded. First, try to decipher the letters from each separate word that you can understand, someone may be able to get the others (if you cannot do so).

Language / I was born in Poland and I cannot pronounce 'CZ' [35]

The sound of 'cz' which is difficult, is very near to the sound of 'cz' that you get in the last sounding of 'church.
There is no other way than repeating words with that sound to a good native speaker who can correct you. You must thing to yourself that if one person can say it so can you. You have the same mouth, tongue, teeth - use what you have. No one is expecting you to be perfect, just a 'near sound' will suffice.

Work / Poland Business Help - I'm interested in investing in this country [28]

Thoughts come to my mind:
1. Childminding services. Opening up a child nursery and being available 24/7. Childminding services in people's homes.
2. Shopping services for the elderly. They give you a list, you go shopping for them. Cooking for the elderly - you come into their house and cook a meal.

3. Having a mobile van (Mobi) and offering/delivering household items to the very busy or elderly/housebound.
4. Fresh sandwiches delivered to places of work. I have seen those in American films. Someone comes with a basket full of fresh sandwiches.
5. Window cleaning services - inside and outside of houses.
6. Centres for meetings where relaxation classes or exercise classes can be held.
7. Dog walking services for anyone who has limited time.

I think that the future of any business must either be connected with the very young or the elderly. The number of elderly people are increasing, so offering services to them would also be on the increase.
