News / What is wrong with Poland that Poles emigrate? [167]

When I went to school in UK and USA I was there for 8 hours, not 2-3.

And yet Polish schools have higher standards than American or British ones. I'd say that the Poles work smarter, not longer in school.

UK, Ireland / Are Poles in UK really that big of a deal? [112]

After having to register to live in Poland, I must say I am really ****** off.

Why? It's a normal practice within the Schengen zone to register your address. Germany, France, Spain and many others all have exactly the same system.

You tell the Polish authorities no one moving to UK has to register and they don't believe it.

I'm not surprised they don't believe it, considering that most of the EU has a formal registration process.

This registration crap in Poland must be a violation of EU rules somehow.

Why? It's a perfectly normal process in much of Europe.

And don't get me started on the BS I had to go through bringing two pallets of personal belongings from the US.

I imagine it would be equally painful in the US for a Polish person to import his goods there.

I still feel like reporting this to the EU somewhere.

Perhaps some experience in the EU would be better rather than ranting on an internet forum.

Law / Moving to Poland - How do I get the Polish Identity Card [17]

How can I apply for Polish Identity Card?

It depends on whether you are a Polish citizen or not. The law is quite complicated in this respect, and if you don't have a Polish last name, I'd probably advise not bothering until you're actually settled in Poland and can deal with it properly.

Law / Registering in Poland for a NIP tax number? [9]

It's a tough, tough market right now - the work has dried up considerably here in Poznan, and there's more and more natives arriving and looking for work.

If you want, I'd be happy to meet up for a beer and a chat about the place - maybe I can help a bit? :)

Law / Registering in Poland for a NIP tax number? [9]

So I have recently moved to Poznan and found a bit of work (very small, one day a week).

What kind of work are you looking for here?

USA, Canada / Only one county in the USA has more Polish-Americans than any other group! [38]

Polish cannot be learned passively, hence why you have expats living in Poland for 10 years and can't speak a lick.

Of course it can, it's absolutely no different to any other language in this respect.

Those expats that can't speak the language simply don't want to learn, that's all. It's the usual "I'm too good for this" attitude they have.

Food / PIZZA & KETCHUP served only in Poland? [159]

With a portion of that nuclear chilli sauce that can stain anything within 3 feet!

It's the perfect end to a night, especially if you end up sleeping face-first in the pizza.

USA, Canada / Only one county in the USA has more Polish-Americans than any other group! [38]

Luzerne county, PA, stand up and take a bow: you are the only county of the 3,144 counties and county equivalents in the USA where Polish-Americans are the largest group!

The picture there of "Polish" immigrants don't look very Polish at all, do they?

Law / U.S. Citizen Moving to Poland - opening business? [36]

Absolutely no-one in their right mind would take the back roads here.

and I already know that there are NO truly American style inns in that area -- specifically offering the amenities that Americans prefer

Do you perhaps wonder why?

If it hasn't been done already in Poland, then there's probably no market for it. I can't imagine most Poles (or even foreigners) shelling out the money needed for such accommodation unless it was in somewhere like Wisla.

Food / PIZZA & KETCHUP served only in Poland? [159]

I just googled 'fried pizza' and take my hat off to you guys north of the border!

Deep fried doner kebab pizza for the win!

Law / U.S. Citizen Moving to Poland - opening business? [36]

The problem is that the area simply isn't that appealing to tourists. The A4 means that there's no reason to stop there (especially as the motorway will be open to Korczowa at the end of next year) - and it's well known that people don't like going off the motorway if they can help it.

For me, I look at the map and see Ruda Slaska, Katowice, Myslowice and other very grim towns. Why would I as a tourist stop there, when I can carry on and stop in Krakow, or Opole/Wroclaw?

There's not much demand in Poland for off-motorway hotel facilities.

Law / U.S. Citizen Moving to Poland - opening business? [36]

A lot of grim, gritty mining towns?

To the OP - if you want to make a success of such a thing, you'd be best to consider somewhere in the Beskidy mountains - Wisła would be a great bet, as would Szczryk - but it would cost you a hell of a lot of money to even buy the building. Zwardon could be an interesting outside bet - there's not much there now, but when the D3 highway gets finished in Slovakia (part of it is under construction now) and connected to the S69 expressway (which is nearly finished) - then Zwardon will be much more accessible. Prices will also be dramatically lower there than in Wisla.

Law / U.S. Citizen Moving to Poland - opening business? [36]

5) What are the steps, that you would recommend, to be taken to establish a business in Poland?

I would recommend living and working in Poland, perhaps in a small town for a year before you do anything else. It will give you a taste of the real Poland, and let you understand what kind of difficulties lie ahead. I wouldn't open a business blindly here - I could take you to many, many businesses that failed in Poznan with foreign owners.

I would say that no education will prepare you for what you'll find here.

Work / RELOCATING TO GDYNIA, Poland - salary question [42]

I bet this place was mad back in the early days of capitalism ;)

It's what I constantly interrogate Harry about!

Hasn't Sobieski been here since 1989 on and off, too? 1990 in Poland would've been an interesting place...

Life / Any good driving schools in Poznań? [4]

Would like to find out, from those residing in Poznań, if there are any good driving schools that offer the course in English.

Absolutely - I highly recommend OSK Arkadia - oskarkadia.pl - make sure that the practical lessons are with the owner, Arek - and you won't go wrong. He is a very very passionate guy about driving, and he treats it as a science rather than as an art - I passed both theory and practical first time with him. Perhaps the best thing is that he's a very talkative guy who will explain everything well, and he is very patient. Can't say a bad word about him and his school

Perhaps the best thing I can say about him is that he is patient - if you tell him "hey, I need to practice this" - then he won't have any issues with it. Too many driving "instructors" are grumpy men, but he certainly isn't.

History / History and old pictures from Nowa Huta [11]

So does anybody know where this Lenin Steel Mill got its raw materials from in the past?

I believe that this may be the answer for you - en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Broad_Gauge_Metallurgy_Line

I'd imagine that the iron ore still comes from Ukraine.

Real Estate / Apartment damage and rental deposit in Poland [20]

Deplh and Harry why you guys always think landlords in Poland will not be paying 9.5% or so tax on rental income?I as a landlord will be so happy to act as a dumb landlord and let you take me to court and sue the sheet out of you afterwards and making you look like dumb fools....seriously:)

I'm fairly certain you wouldn't have a chance in a Polish court, given the amount of enemies you already have in Warsaw...

Travel / Incorrect passport date on boarding pass [13]

This does happen - I saw it last month at Warsaw Airport. The person in question didnt get further than check-in. For some journeys they also check passport details at the gate - though as far as I know this is more about visas/entitlement to enter the destination country and they weren't looking for minor discrepancies.

Yep, they are under the obligation to check that passengers have the right to enter the destination country. That's why - for instance - Ryanair insists that non-EU nationals have their documents checked.

Travel / Incorrect passport date on boarding pass [13]

Im using Polish passport. My Polish passport is what is indicated on the boarding pass so visa is nonissue.

Well then, why would the border guards care less?

The border control at the Luton end might be more strict if things don't add up.

Unlikely that the tosspots at UKBA would even have a clue.

He could even enter the UK on his US passport, it wouldn't make any difference at all.

Travel / How does wizz air compare with ryanair? [32]

It was more wishful thinking than a factual statement :(

Having said this, I'm totally against parents with children boarding first - Ryanair have it absolutely right - if you want to board first, you have to pay.

Life / Poland: The land of -isms [63]

You can comment, true, but you are not entitled (and never will be) to be telling us what we need or should do.

Fortunately, I can - I can vote here and have no qualms about using it.

I criticize (and will continue doing so) oppressive antiPolish regime which is currently governing Poland but never Poland herself.

It's pretty obvious you have no idea what a regime is if you think that the Polish government is a "regime". It's a democratically elected government that won power in an election that was conducted to Western democratic standards.

Then again, regimes don't tend to hold influence in Canadian basements.

Travel / How does wizz air compare with ryanair? [32]

How is wizz air compared to Ryan air? Traveling with infant...

They make it very difficult for those with infants. Infants must board last (because they tend to irritate other passengers) and there is a rule on board that parents will be charged if their infant makes life a misery for passengers by crying constantly. They will also not tolerate you taking one of those huge "travel systems" to the plane, too - you will have to check it in and pay for it.

Wizzair is a fantastic airline for those that can't abide infants.

Life / Poland: The land of -isms [63]

Unfortunately, if I mention the fact that Poland still needs to progress greatly considering the country is still filled with many racists and antisemites then I will be called anti-Polish.

Because we live in Poland and can comment on what we see.

On the other hand, you've presented a consistent anti-Polish agenda on this site. A few compliments doesn't change the fact that you've criticised Poland constantly on here.
