News / Why no reprivatisation in Poland? Holocaust-era property ownership. [119]

"Confiscated" here too is not accurate, jon! "Confiscation" can be legal, as can search and seizure. What the Nazis did was neither; it was out and out plundering:-)

Yes. Plundering is a fair word.

Important to remember that we aren't talking about turfing poor people out of small houses here, this mostly involves commercial and investment properties and upscale real estate.

News / Why no reprivatisation in Poland? Holocaust-era property ownership. [119]

Awful times.

One thing that is often mentioned is that some people get property back and some don't. Basically property confiscated during the occupation was illegally seized whereas property nationalised just after the war wasn't. It does rankle with some.

A very close friend has got back bits of property taken from one side of his family who lost it under the occupation due to their ethnicity, however he doesn't have much hope of getting back property taken from the other side of his family after the Dekret Bieruta. An injustice? Yes, however to deny the claims of one group because another group's claims are invalid for different reasons is illogical.

The burden of proof however, rests almost exlusively on the presence of any supporting, still extant, documentation (if there was any), along with that of the heirs to such property/estate etc.

Absolutely. As well as the way it came into state ownership. Property taken during the occupation was originally illegally seized.

News / Poland Parliamentary elections 2015 [1060]

With all due respect, you don't live in Poland, so you don't see the huge changes in everyday life. PO is hope - PiS is what represents a return to the bad old days.

Sums it all up really.

As for Tusk going to the EU - For most ordinary Poles, it was a way to say "look, we can do it too".

Indeed.

The big worry (and remember that there are votes this time who were in short trousers during the short-lived PiSuar regime) is that history will repeat itself, Szydlo will vanish and the madman Jaro will take over - you can bet your bottom dollar that his inner circle are plotting the best way to do this already.

One bit of good news is that it looks like none of the extremist plankton parties are going to scrape a few seats and give them potential coalition parties - last time they were so shameless that they got into bed with Lepper and with an openly fascist party. Whereas the PSL always do better in reality than in the polls and have stronger links with Platforma.

Travel / Abandoned / Derelict places in Poland to visit [22]

It's just something interesting to see. A network of tunnels and a grotto used as the king's brother's knocking shop. Built by a famous architect.

Quite a history and not usually possible to see. There are also some other tunnels in Warsaw, even harder to get into.

Sooner or later these poor areas will improve and cities like £ódź seem better for the old buildings which very much form an architectural unity and give the city its unique atmosphere. Once they're gone, they're gone for good and replaced with the slums of tomorrow. Of course if there's no architectural merit at all and the residents' lives are made miserable by their surroundings it's a different story.

For one day only, the Warsaw Elizeum is open. If you're in town and haven't been before, it's very worth it. Normally, it's visiting only by special arrangement.

Demand is likely to be high, so turn up early.

to be returned, at least partially, to their rightful owner(s)

Yes. regardless of citizenship or any other matter; if a property was illegaly seized by the occupiers and there is documented ownership at the time of seizure, it should be returned without undue hesitation.

Travel / Travelling from Wroclaw to Warsaw without my Poland's Karta pobytu? Nobody will check my status? [14]

Modlin

LOT to Wroclaw goes from Okęcie, not much difference for us in a cab due to the route used, and in any case last time we would have needed a cab at the other end anyway even if we'd gone by train.

I've never seen the point of the VIP lounge

I would find it a terrible affront to turn down free booze. It would go against all my principles and values. I would be heartbroken.

119zl, which makes it at best more than 50% more than the Pendolino.

We checked the train first and it was a lot more than that - perhaps because we wanted to travel on Friday afternoon.

When I go to Berlin each month, I always take the train - the first class dining car is very comfortable and it's cheap (Air Berlin have just put their prices up - I used tho sometimes go by plane and return by train for various reasons...) and we did think about the train first, however time was of the essence and comfort is an issue when we travel together.

I don't bother to pack liquid toiletries if I'm alone - solid deodorant is fine and a tube of toothpaste wherever I'm going costs pennies. If I'm with my other half, we need a checked in bag anyway for certain reasons, so no problem, and you still get that anyway on Eurolot.

Also remember there are mobility and other connected issues, so a cab to the airport, a G&T or six and a cab at the other end is good for us.

The OP should check the prices of both, using the PKP Intercity website and Momondo.co.uk. The new LOT website is more trouble than it's worth - probably just dandy if you a. use Windows 8 air b. like computer games.

And re. the OP's question, if he/she has a Schengen Visa (which as an international student he/she will) then there's no need to show a Karta Pobytu. The passport will be fine.

I know that Ryan Air checked if I had a valid EU visa when traveling with my passport. They put a stamp on the boarding pass.

They have to - it can be expensive for them if they let you fly and you don't have a visa. But within Schengen they aren't bothered and no need for a Karta Pobytu. Where were you travelling to/from.

News / Why no reprivatisation in Poland? Holocaust-era property ownership. [119]

That's neither here nor there, and if in fact you had started it, you would doubtless be puzzled at why there is nutty stuff like:

ews were taking part in many atrocities

Ottoman's slave trade

the red terror

As if it had the slightest relevance to restitution of stolen real estate.

Life / Christian Fellowships & Prayer groups in Poland - Szczecin [43]

Nope. In our religion, the snakes (as they do in Matthew) represent demons. We handle them and if we are true to our faith, they cannot hurt us.

If you think that's odd. look at some of the kooky stuff the Seventh Day Adventists believe in, not to mention those fruitcakes who deny evolution.

Are there many SDAs in Szczecin? I know they've got a bit of prime real estate on Foksal, probably paid for by Americans since there are very few in PL.

As I remember they have some pretty off-centre ideas about electricity, television and other technologies.

"They shall take up serpents; and if they drink any deadly thing, it shall not hurt them; they shall lay hands on the sick, and they shall recover,"

Mark 16:17-18

Where did you find that bit of info?

Personal connections.

The Seventh Day Adventists have the TRUTH

This is laughable.

No weirder than any other group who consider a text to be the inerrant word of a transcendent deity.

None are exact, JohnnyReb. The most literal is probably the New International Version which born again Christians favour. I prefer the Jerusalem Bible, a Catholic translation or JB Phillips, out of fashion now and not literal.

Po3, your link is to a tiny group who don't have a priest of their own any more. There are also no Mariawici in Szczecin.

News / Poles v Tusk's school 'reform' [58]

but it's not an easy task having 'normal' 6 & 7 year olds who are up to speed on the curriculum and then you're landed with Pawel from Rzeszow who can't read/write his own language let alone English.

It makes the job very hard and costs extra to get a classroom assistant in.

News / LGBT hate speech to be banned in Poland [208]

Nope. Consistent political lobbying, enforced restriction of alcohol sales, blackmailing governments to compromise rights to abortion and other forms of family planning, public pronouncements against in-vitro and much much more. And yes, they have as much right as any other group to voice their opinion - providing they do not silence others.

Nobody tries to silence them or any other religious body, however you seem hell bent in your obsession to encourage that other groups should be denied a voice.

You even accuse some groups of 'infiltration'. And let us not forget the consistent lies and slander you have propagated here over a couple of dozen threads spanning the best part of a decade. Truly an obsession.

By the way, Pol3, what are your views on transvestitism within the family?

News / Poles v Tusk's school 'reform' [58]

She said that she dreads seeing new Polish kids after every summer coz they are so utterly useless in classes, they can barely read or write their own language

I've heard the same, as well as teachers brought in from Poland who find it hard t cope with a broad curriculum. They're used to telling things to kids rather than showing them how to find out.

Those years of missed education in Poland are valuable ones.

infiltrated

So you regard taking part in something as 'infiltration'? Essentially that suggests that you would prefer to deny certain groups a voice.

forced the closure of businesses

So you're unaware about the bar next to that very same church that closed...

News / Poles v Tusk's school 'reform' [58]

It's actually relevant to both the Polish and the British systems and the current reforms - there's a shortage of pre-school places in both countries. Friends in both countries pay a small fortune (I was appalled when I heard how much people have to pay and of course most can't afford it) to get a place for their kids.

One particular issue in Poland that distorts everything and creates chaos is the fall in population numbers as well as large housing developments being built without anyone thinking about the effect on infrastructure. Near me in Warsaw there are a couple of new estates with thousands of flats (the place is a total Nappy Valley) and nobody in the local authority gave a moment's attention about where all the kids would go to school.

News / Poles v Tusk's school 'reform' [58]

If a kid is still wearing nappies at 4, it suggests maybe a special school, however as far as I'm aware, very few if any have uniforms.

Unless it's some sort of private nursery (sounds expensive) that dresses them up.

We had uniforms at infant school (a good idea) but I never saw any nappies.

News / Poles v Tusk's school 'reform' [58]

Youngsters will begin their education at age 7.

One issue is that with families moving between Poland and the UK etc, it's possible that a young child could be plucked out of kindergarten (which is not the same as an infant school) and find themselves mid way through Primary. Or vice versa. An odd situation.

News / Poland's Archbishop Wesolowski trial starts [28]

Even a 21 year old would be ok, if a little unusual. I agree, it is shocking that this situation has arisen within the RCC, and I'm not sure what causes people to behave like that, especially clergy.

Wherever there's goodness, evil looks for a way in.

@Jon: these people are obviously sick and I long as they will be covered by their hierarchy, I'll criticize them.

And rightly so.

a small kid's

In his case, I gather it was homeless teenage street prostitutes, not that he should be excused for that.

paedophilia is a crime but is it a crime as per the RCC's standards? One may wonder since the RCC seem to put up with them.

I think you mean actually doing it - yes that is a crime and important that it is in order to deter anyone who may be tempted that way - it certainly seems that a lot of clergy are. And yes, the RCC was criminally negligent in tolerating some of this crimes.
