USA, Canada / Can you BE Polish without SPEAKING Polish in the US? [256]

So what are you going to do? Get angry when someone sees a Vietnamese born in the US but from Vietnamese parents and calls them Vietnamese even though they might not know the language? It's the same sort of idea. Get over it already because you cannot change the world.

When you have a Polish last name people are always going to call you Polish. Apparently, they do not read threads such as these or they don't care. To them I am just "Polish."

Love / Problem with a brutal American guy (now I live in Poland) [88]

You should report the weirdo to Interpole and the FBI if he is trafficking or he will continue and there will be more victims. It's up to you to alert the authorities if you know he is doing something wrong. Just keep reporting him whenever possible and don't respond to his emails or messages. Call the police in the town he inhabits and tell them about him. Since you already did that, I just read, keep calling back until they do something.

Love / My PL GF wants name on bills, morgage, and business [35]

Why would she want her name on your bills? Is she planning on paying them? Very strange behaviour. Is she planning on paying off the mortgage? Don't put her name on any deeds but if she wants the bills let her pay them.

Travel / BIG LESSON (I visited and was threatened in Poland) [71]

I wouldn't hand over any company money before doing a thorough risk assessment first and having some kind of legal contract drawn up. I would seek some sort of guarantee.

USA, Canada / If America is so bad, why move here? [254]

If you don't like America or Americans and believe it to be inferior to your tastes simply stay away from here.

USA, Canada / If America is so bad, why move here? [254]

Another misconception about America is our government is too big or not limited enough. It's just not true. If you go to a country that puts its military on the streets and whose leaders have cults of personality, you realize US government is quite limited. This is why so many around the world want to be here.

Life / Polish holiday tradition - granny dumping? [13]

Oh please! I have never dumped anyone at the hospital! If patients are staying too long, policy should change.

If the older person is experiencing holiday induced discomfort, shouldn't they be taken to the hospital? Especially if an underlying condition is involved. They might insist on going.

There's one way to solve this. Release the patient and have a driver drive them back home. If the family is gathered, they won't be able to hide andthey will have to answer the door.

On the bright side, it saves heart patients the stress of the holiday with all it's rich food. Thepatient might actually be safer in the environment of the hospital since heart attacks happen with greater frequency around Christmas. It could be a welcome respite for some.

Life / Why is Polish Christmas on the 24th? [87]

You don't fast on the Eve. If any fasting occured in antiquity, it would have occured on Christmas day. Eves are traditionally considered a time to engage in various sins of the flesh.

If there is a trade war it's the best thing that could happen for European and American manufacturing. It will bring jobs back. I say bring it, China!

Things are getting worse. I heard China is threatening Europe with a trade war over carbon taxes on airplanes. Looks like we will be getting even more economic refugees.

Life / Why is Polish Christmas on the 24th? [87]

In the Catholic tradition the day before important holy days is more significant than the actual day, or at least it looks that way. It's because the only celebrated holy day is Easter while the others are reserved for reflecting on mysteries or going without in reverence for the holy day. The holy days are important but you are not supposed to do much on them. This is why activity is reserved for the eve before the holy day.

News / Polish Domination by Germany [69]

So it's Germany taking over countries without actually invading them. I wonder when Germany will bail out Great Britain?

Well it does seem like the EU exists only to bail out these failing PIIG countries. Maybe that is why it was created in the first place? The strong takes care of the weak.

Life / Gran Torino - Walt Kowalski, the movie [39]

Walt's ethnic slurs are shown to be wholly outdated and no one with half a brain would walk away from that movie thinking it justifies Polonopobia in the 21st Century.

That could have been the film makers intention but people can still misinterpret that. I don't know of any older people who talk like that, anyway. Sure, they might have back in the day but they know all about "PC" and most of them don't want to offend people and hurt their feelings by calling them an ethnic slur to their face. I never hear old people using ethnic slurs where I live, in public. What people say in private is their own business.

Life / Gran Torino - Walt Kowalski, the movie [39]

And then at the end of the movie, the hmong kid inherits the Gran Torino he tried to steal at the beginning of the movie which is going to cause him a lot of guilt. It's one big cycle of guilt.

But yes, the impression I got was the Kowalskis were supposed to be the typical Polish American family from the midwest.

Life / Gran Torino - Walt Kowalski, the movie [39]

It reminds me of the idea that everybody should get to know the people they go to war with personally before they go to war with them. Then they would see how human they are and wouldn't want to do it.

Life / Gran Torino - Walt Kowalski, the movie [39]

It's like the director threw the word "polack" in there just so he could justify the steady stream of other slurs and jokes about the hmong, "hey, it's okay, we are calling the protagonist a Polack so don't worry about offensive terms like "slope head" and "zipper." The slurs were wrong no matter what.

Life / Gran Torino - Walt Kowalski, the movie [39]

I did notice his last name is Polish but the movie was only racist in a superficial sense. The plot centered around the idea of redemption for a man who served in a war and might have done some things that weighed heavily on his conscience. My only question is, could the movie have been just as effective without so many slurs? It almost came off as an excuse to get such drivel on the big screen even though it was part of the plot, specifically.
