Love / 6 months with my Polish girlfriend and I still don't understand her.. [208]

She is 28, I am 30.

I've dated a Polish girl for the past 3 months and I've decided to leave her this weekend. I've found a local American girl instead. I dunno if it's me being in this country for 20 years and having a different mentality, but alot of things bothered me when I was with her. Very demanding, wanting to be in control ('m rebelious by nature lol) kind of boring.. it was always coming from me and hardly ever from her, if that makes any sence. With the American girl is different, a better different.

USA, Canada / US Polonia 70% for Kaczyński [343]

If US Polonia was in step with Poles, 3 out of 10 member of Polonia would have voted PiS. But 8 out of 10 actually voted PiS, nearly three times as many as would have voted PiS if Polonia reflected how Poland voted as a whole.

I think delphie would agree with me on this one, what's Poland's current rural population percentage? 40, maybe even 30% now? Up until a few decades ago 80% of Polish immigrants to the US were from the countryside. Now I think it's still something like 60% (mostly people from Podhale, Podlaskie, Podkarpackie) althought there are many immigrants from the large cities as well. If you look at PiS supporters in Poland itself you'll find people from the same areas voting for them.

USA, Canada / US Polonia 70% for Kaczyński [343]

That's patriotic, Penn. Nationalistic is a dislike of other nations.

Hmm they usually go hand in hand. People who strongly love their homeland look down on other nations or with envy.

Heck, some of the most moral people I know drink. I wonder why :)

Drunks are the most honest people, they're loosened up and euphoric so don't care to lie. Plus truth comes out when you're drunk.

USA, Canada / US Polonia 70% for Kaczyński [343]

Why is nationalistic desirable in the EU, Penn? Or is it desirable?

I don't think the highlanders here care much for Catholicism. They value tradition and drinking more :)

No one will say it and every country wants the other to be liberal and open but they themselves would prefer to be nationalistic and look out strictly for the interests of it's own people. Well I know a few who've promised before a priest they'll never drink again and are so far keeping their word, so there is some kind of old fashioned belief in the church and respect for it.

USA, Canada / US Polonia 70% for Kaczyński [343]

PiS (at least in theory) is traditional, nationalistic, Catholic things the Highlanders adore. They are proud of their region, faith and country. Come to Chicago you'll see.

USA, Canada / US Polonia 70% for Kaczyński [343]

This caught my eye, what teh US State Department thinks

"a person naturalized as a U.S. citizen may not lose the citizenship of the country of birth.U.S. law does not mention dual nationality or require a person to choose one citizenship or another." It's therefore tolerated in America and vice versa in Poland. Back to the topic of discution here in Chicago where I am right now, PiS is very popular especially on the south side among the Polish highlanders. I don't know if they're the right party for Poland but I do think that neighter is PO. Something new is needed.

Polonia / What similarities would you say there are between Poles and Mexicans? [132]

I never see any thin Mexican women.

I saw many beautiful Mexican girls and women in Chicago last month. It more or less depends on how much Spanish blood they got in their mix. The ones from the southern part of the country are almost all Indians, and they are mostly unattractive.

Life / Are Polish people so chaotic and disorganized like Germans say? [89]

Ah...no. You haven't. You've clearly never experienced the wonders that is the urząd, and the working hours designed to suit them. Work ethic? What work ethic?

A Polish person (generalization) thinks of getting out of work as fast as possible not making a difference in the company, that was even more visible during communist times. But this is a generalization and it's if a Pole is working for someone else. Now when it comes to his own business he/she is very organized sometimes to extremes. The same goes for a Pole's home and belongings keeps it looking new and neat.

Work / Tri-city area - Companies that offer Jobs for English speakers? [23]

Perhaps it might be best if you Americans stuck to talking about your own country

Ja jestem Polakiem

I didn't manage to find a job without speaking Polish in Gdansk area and I've been here for over a year now.

Yes that is why foreigners can almost only expect to find English teacher jobs in Poland. Shows how much you know

Work / Tri-city area - Companies that offer Jobs for English speakers? [23]

Why is it so difficult to understand that Polish is not exactly a world language?

We're not talking about the world we're talking about Poland. It's fully understandable that Polish companies in Poland expect people to speak Polish.

This is weird. Poles who go to the UK or US are expected to speak English if seeking a job other than laborer. Why is it so difficult to understand that in Poland they want you to speak Polish? You're not gonna have it easier just because English is a world language, you're in a different country.

History / Operation Simoom (the 20 billion dollar deal for Poland) [2]

In 1990 Polish intelligence conducted an operation assisting in the withdrawal of six American operatives (a mix of CIA and DIA officers) investigating Iraqi troops movements in Iraq before the Gulf War. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Operation_Simoom

After the operation was over and successful the Americans asked 'what do you want from us'? Poland answered nothing, 'at least let us pay for your operational costs', again the answer from the Polish side was, no. As a reward CIA director Webster during his visit to Poland forgave half of Poland's debt to the United States, 20 billion dollars:

With gratitude to the head of the CIA left Mazowiecki letter in which he reduced the Polish debt to the United States by half , or $ 20 billion - says gen. Gromosław Czempiński , Polish spy , one of the main characters of operation " Simoom " .

Love / Polish women USED TO BE much more attractive: [162]

Not really it's that when you're a teenager you're growing. Also back then the portions of food were much smaller you got a 8 maybe 12 oz soda, the burgers and fries for instance would be classed as small by todays sizes. You can eat junk food and look good just don't eat like a pig.

Work / Polish salaries - New statistics [38]

The salaries in Poland are low due to low work efficiency/productivity.

66.6% for Poland even after two decades of steady growth lol. During communist times it was even lower and the commies claimed to be a 'workers society' yet no one worked. Laborers, people in manager and administrative positions drank vodka. btw 177.5 for Luxemburg what are the they elves in a workshop?

Love / Latest relationship drama in Polonia/USA... [39]

Dude please I doubt you're anywhere near like you've described yourself. If the mother and sister don't want you to be with their daughter/sister they obviously figured you out and know you're the wrong one for her. You're 7 years older than her? why didn't you get married sooner? were the previous girls and their families quick to label you a loser and get you out the picture?

Work / Polish salaries - New statistics [38]

Average now is 3601 zl/m.

I have a friend who claims he'd be making 3500zl/m instead of the 5500zl/m he's making now if it wasn't for his doctorate.

Dayum, Pennboy, stomp on the guy!

It wasn't my intention to be mean but I know a similar Polish-American couple and the story is almost identical. What I suggested about him was exactly what that guy was. Every family want the best for their brothers and sisters if a girl is attractive, smart, educated has a career she has the option of being with attractive and successful men. No one should ever marry just for money but if a guy has almost nothing c'mon, she's out of your league. I'm pretty cute but I don't drive a Benz that's why I know I have to settle for 7s, or 8s not dimes. It's just the way the world is.

Love / Latest relationship drama in Polonia/USA... [39]

My GF lives with me. The sister/mother/mother's 3rd husband live together... they are miserable and we are super happy.

Dude you sound like you're lying and not telling us everything about yourself. Sounds to me like they've figured out you're a loser and you're worried she'll dump you. If she is pretty and successful you're aiming too high and need to find yourself a quote 'trash ******' Is this why you went for a immigrant girl thinking she and her family wont know??? c'mon man it's the same in Europe and any civilized country.

USA, Canada / Moving from United Kingdom to USA. Is it worth it? [136]

How about Canada instead of the US? A friend of mine emigrated there (she already had citizenship having lived there most of her childhood) with her family (she has two little boys) and she loves it and will never come back to the UK.

There are really nice places to settle in the US also just not Washington, Baltimore, Philadelphia (except suburbs) or New York (except Manhattan). vakenaugment.com/large-city/

Life / Is it me or do people "seem" to live longer in Poland? Life expectancy among Poles. [52]

"but there isn't too much sunlight in Poland. " Not so, Poland's annual hours of sunshine are equivalent to Northern Italy, higher than most of Germany for instance.

Depends which part of Poland Warsaw (92 days) is almost equal to the NE U.S with 93 days of sunshine a year. Next is Rzeszow and Wroclaw. Kielce, Szczecin have a third less sunny days than Warsaw.

North America is fatter but younger looking.

Thankfully I kept my good European genes and didn't become a fat slob while living here. As for aging, don't get me wrong I love Poland's climate cold winters and pretty mild summers but there isn't too much sunlight in Poland. Here sun shines whole year round while in Poland in the winter time hardly ever. Natural vitamin D essential go well being, mood and skin.

Merged: Polish-born ex-US military chief John Shalikashvili dies

US President Barack Obama hailed his "only in America" story, born on June 27, 1936, in Warsaw to Georgian refugee parents fleeing Russia's Bolshevik uprising.

General Shalikashvili was granted US citizenship in 1958, six years after emigrating to Illinois. It was his first citizenship ever, as he had previously been considered stateless. He learned English from John Wayne movies.

The Polish-born General Shalikashvili became chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff in 1993, serving under then president Bill Clinton until he retired in 1997.
