Law / Investors/Entrepreneurs.. Steer Clear of Poland. [77]

I've spent over 3 years in Poland and been operating my restaurant for the last 6 months, so I am not speaking without merit.
Like they say in Poland "life is brutal and full of traps" it is the truth.

I was wondering, how long did you prepare to make this business venture into Poland? What kind of research did you do ahead of time?

Have you started up similar businesses in the US?

If so, you probably know that 4 out of 5 new businesses fail in the US within 5 years, so starting a new business in general is always challenging. Especially a labor intensive business like a restaurant.

USA, Canada / Polish Fighter Tomasz Adamek vs Michael Grant WAR [20]

That's a good point about Grant.

Granted (no pun intended lol) Grant and Adamek were both taking risks trying to knock each others block off at all times, but you would have thought Grant would have fought in the earlier rounds like he was in the last round. He should have let it all out earlier.

USA, Canada / Polish Fighter Tomasz Adamek vs Michael Grant WAR [20]

LOL

Oh come on it wasn't that bad.

The commentators liked it.

If they played more of the fight in slow motion you would be able to see more of the punches from each boxer knocking back the other guy's head back 8 inches.

Adamek hits so fast that it seems like he's not hitting when he is.

USA, Canada / Polish Fighter Tomasz Adamek vs Michael Grant WAR [20]

Whether Adamek wins or loses this fight, one thing for sure is he will fight with the heart of a tiger in all rounds. I've never really seem him back off or just cruise through a round, no matter what was happening. He seemed to always have some tactic he was working.

In his last match with Arreola, which was with a bigger and stronger puncher, Adamek seemed to adjust to him and kept fighting from the outside while quickly coming in and out with a flurry of punches. You could see a fustrated Arreola saying to Adamek in the rink to "Stay still" and "stop doing that" or something along those lines.

If Grant shows a lot of heart through all the rounds, then there will be a war here.

But if Grant feels he's getting pounded more then he thought he would, he might have flash backs of the Lewis and Guinn fights and then collapse. Boxing is just as much mental as it is physical.

USA, Canada / Polish Fighter Tomasz Adamek vs Michael Grant WAR [20]

@Nathan
I think you have a good analysis of the fight.

It should be a good one.

I predict Adamek will win by a close decision. But anything could happen. Grant is a great athlete himself.

I know one thing, despite who wins or loses, the Prudential Center in Newark NJ will be a big winner. There are a lot of Polish people in the Newark NJ/New York City Area and over half of the fans there at the Adamek fights are Polish Americans spending a lot of cash to see their man.

USA, Canada / Polish Fighter Tomasz Adamek vs Michael Grant WAR [20]

This Saturday at the Prudential Center in Newark NJ, Polish fighter Tomasz Adamek will be fighting American superstar Boxer Michael Grant.

This is going to be a war.

Adamek is tough but Michael Grant has been one of the best American heavyweights for years. He is 6 foot 7, 250 pounds and built like tank.

Adamek comes in at about 6 foot 2, 217 pounds.

It should be a good fight.

I have some great Polish friends here , as well as some i don,t like at all...

I imagine it will be the same in Russia...

Oh please.

What did I say that made you think I hate Russians?

When I said that its good that Poles are sending firefighters to help the Russians?

Why all this hypersensitivity about Russians?

I agree.

Poland and Russia may have there differences but at the end of the day, the way I see it, there are innocent Russian people suffering and dying in Russia now because of these tragic fires. These innocent Russians never did anything to Polish people, so its only natural that average Polish people try to help them out. It comes down to human beings helping out other human beings in need.

Anyway, Poland sent its help while others are still negotiating...

I am glad Polish people are helping Russia fight the Russian fires.

Usually in the past it was the governments of Poland and Russia that have had differences. But it always seemed to me the PEOPLE of Poland and Russia generally had more sympathy for each other then meets the eye. That's probably part of the reason the Polish are not hesitating to help the Russian people fight their tragic fires.

News / Poland sends firefighters to help Russia [67]

True but what was the spark of these fires?

Here in the western US we have had many forest fires when the temperature and climate were extreme.

I used to think these fires used to just start by something natural like lightning or something like that, until I read that the MOST forest fires are started by human error and accidents like throwing away a cigarette butt which happens all over the world all the time.

They say that was the case with most of the California fires and then they also said some illegals in California were recklessly if not purposely throwing around drug burning/producing items that were lit.

They say most forest fires in any part of the world are caused by humans (mostly because of carelessness). I didn't think that before until I read that report.

News / Poland sends firefighters to help Russia [67]

Poland sent 155 firefighters and 50 fire-fighting vehicles to help put out the wildfires in Russia

I think its the neighborly and humane thing to do, for the Poles to help the Russians put out their fires, even if Poles and Russians may have their differences.

But what's up with those fires?

There are maps and reports that show hundreds and hundreds of fires in Russia.

Most fires in any country are accidentally started by humans just like here in the US.

With so many fires going on in Russia, could any of this be arson?

Huh? You can't be serious. He lost because people finally figured out what a scumbag and a weasel he really is. Good riddance!!!!!!!!!!

Life / What is the reason for POLISH jokes ? [486]

You are partly correct.

I was referring to the years when the so called Polish jokes were at their peak like in the 1970's.

You are correct in that most Americans today don't push jokes against any ethnic group if they feel it offends that group. Be it Polish people, Italians, Black people, Jewish people, etc.

Things have definitely changed a lot in the past 30 years for Polish people in the US for the better.

The fact that former Senator Arlen Specter apologized to both Polish Americans and non-Polish Americans for his Polish jokes of Dec 2008, shows that most Americans don't tolerate biased comments about ethnic groups.

Arlen Specter's disproportionate election loss to a relatively unknown candidate, some say was partly due to his so called Polish jokes that voters didn't forget.

Although these so called Polish jokes pop up once in a while in the mainstream media, as like with other ethnic groups, I do agree with you that in general you can't openly ridicule Polish people on TV, radio, etc. (like years ago). Unless of course the person is going out of their way to be aggressive or controversial.

Life / What is the reason for POLISH jokes ? [486]

This is where Polish jokes come from.

You can find examples of the good and bad/peculiar behaviors of individuals of any ethnic group. You find these same examples of other ethnic groups as well. You name it, Black, Hispanic, Jewish, Irish, Italian, Arab or whomever.

But isn't it the sign of prejudice by Hollywood and the TV media to DEFINE Polish people by the worst of them and push that imagery of them? Assuming in fact that you did not just make up those examples.

Why did the TV media and Hollywood single out the Polish people for bashing?

What about all the good and industrious things Polish Americans have done? Why didn't Hollywood and the TV media push a stereotype about that?

So what about Auschwitz Polish Christian survivor Michael Preisler and many other Poles like him reporting on these same type of subhuman intelligence jokes being told to them by Nazis? You do realize the Poles were seen as having subhuman intelligence by them and many inferior intelligence "jokes" were made to Poles by Nazis. What do you think Nazi propaganda was all about in reference to Polish people????

I have talked to older Polish Americans and they said before the 1960's they never heard any of these inferior intelligence jokes about Polish people. Only kind of so called Polish jokes were about Pierogis, Kielbasa, Poles having thick accents, etc. But they said they all of a sudden noticed a wave of the "Polish people have inferior intelligence jokes" in the 1960's. Surprise Surprise....just when National TV had TV shows like "Laugh In", "All in the Family", "The Tonight Show" letting loose on Polish people with inferior intelligence jokes.

Can you please explain to me how these jokes against Polish people came about in areas where there were NO Polish people? Afterall you keep saying Polish people started them.

Do you really think Polish people would tell jokes that favor the Nazi Germans over the Polish people? Like when Johnny Carson of NBC-TV said on newyears day of 1968/1969 "My favorite year was the year Poland was invaded". That's a JOKE??????? to you?? Joking about the murdering of millions of Polish people? No my friend that was pure maliciousness by NBC-TV of that time.

George Schlatter who was the NBC-TV media boss during those years acknowledged that repetition of TV skits and "jokes" about Polish people would degrade their image. He admitted it to the Polish American Guardian Society. He basically was saying to Polish Americans, "I'M going to use my media power to degrade you Polish people and there is nothing you dumb Polacks can do about it".

!" You make a joke out of the situation. That's where Polish jokes come from. You don't get mad, you laugh. Polish jokes are a way to relieve the day to day stress of assimilation into a new country. This is where Polish jokes come from.

So tell me.

Assuming you didn't just make up these stories, do you really think these Polish people who supposedly made these Polish jokes meant for ALL Polish people to be ridiculed constantly for years by the powerful TV media as having inferior intelligence?

When the constant ridiculing and mocking of Polish people by Hollywood and the TV Media lead to some Polish Americans getting their houses vandalized by idiots who lated cranked called them telling them the SAME Polish jokes they heard on a TV show the night before, was this the objective of the these Polish people who you allege started these hate-through-humor jokes against Polish people?

Were the inferior intelligence jokes about Polish people heard by Polish Christian survivors at Nazi death camps a way to relieve thier day?

Sure sure people like to start propaganda that leads to thier identity being ridiculed and mocked to relieve their day. LOL Are you crazy???

What next are going to tell me, that Black people started ape jokes about themselves to relieve the stresses of the day?

Are you going to tell me Jews started rat jokes about Jews to "relieve the stress of the day"???

Life / What is the reason for POLISH jokes ? [486]

Who started redneck jokes? Southerners poking fun at other Southerners.

Really? That's not what Southerners who care about their culture tell me.

Why do Southerners use the word "Yankee" in a degrading way to refer to people who put them down as "rednecks"? Because they enjoy being mocked as stupid rednecks by non-Southerners???

There may be truth to some Southerners "poking fun" at other Southerners as "rednecks" just like you have a minority of people in every group that say unorthodox things about their own people. But Southerners who are proud of their culture and see the good of their culture resent the Hollywood stereotype of them being backward morons. They resent those Southerners (and non-Southerners) who make money mimicking the Hollywood negative stereotype of Southerners. Lets not forget that the Leftist element in Hollywood that does ridicule Southerners do so because they still hold the Confederacy thing against them. Oh yeah the Hollywood people who made the Anti-Southerner movie "Deliverance" are just loved by Southerners LOL

What you don't seem to realize is the effect Hollywood/mass media has on perpetuating and exaggerating a stereotype for the worse.

But maybe the Southerners, as misguided as they are, who do "poke fun" at other Southerners as "rednecks" do so because they know a "Southerner" or a "redneck" is NOT a specific identity. It is NOT a national/ethnic ancestry. They know that a "Southerner" or "redneck" could always move to the north and drop the Southern accent and change their identity. Someone who is of a given ancestry can not change their identity.

The roots and subject matter of Redneck jokes are the same as Polish jokes. No difference.

In a way you're right. The Leftist element in Hollywood that portrays Polish people and Southerners negatively, don't like them both.

No body in Hollywood or America hates Poles. Actually America in general is rather ambivalent towards Poles and Poland. If anything Poles are ignored, probably due to the fact that we assimilate so easily.

As I have said before, most of the American people per se do NOT hate Polish people. It was a Leftist ELEMENT of Hollywood and the media in the 60's and 70's that used their media power to repeat hate through humor slurs against Polish people, under the guise of "humor" in an attempt to get the American people to think Poles have inferior intelligence. You honestly think all those anti-Polish slurs had no effect on people's opinions of Poles?

You keep saying Poles started these anti-Polish jokes. And lets call them what they are..... ANTI-Polish jokes or INSULT Jokes. Lets stop being politically correct here.

You really think Polish people would make sick jokes about how great it was about Hitler invading Poland and praising the Nazis like NBC-TV "comedians" did? You think Polish people made sick jokes about Polish mothers being "PROSTITUTES"? Like Joan Rivers did when she was on NBC-TV?? Poland being "crap"?

How do you explain people in the US who did not live near any Polish people learning the exact same anti-Polish jokes as other people in non-Polish areas virtually simultaneously???? Was it Polish people you claim "started" these jokes who telepathically put these hate jokes in the minds of millions of Americans?? Tell me how Polish people did that?????

When the Polish American Guardian Society surveyed Americans in the 70's who did NOT know any Polish people, these people said they had a bad opinion of Polish people. When they were asked "How can you have a bad opinion of Polish people if you do NOT know any???

Their answer was "Oh ITS BECAUSE OF WHAT THEY SAY ABOUT POLISH PEOPLE ON TV AND IN THE MOVIES!!!!" "With all those Polish jokes I hear on TV how can anyone have anything good to say about them!"

If Poles were hated by America as much as you say they are, they wouldn't be third on your chart. BTW who is last on your list? Indians and Blacks. Now these two groups may have an issue with how America perceives them. Not the Poles. Poles are a success story.

This chart of data is not based on perception. It was based on raw data of ethnic groups' income I believe about 25 years ago (the source of this income data was Thomas Sowell. An African American columnist).

I agree Polish Americans in general are a success story measured by financial metrics. But that reality means almost nothing if your image is attacked by opinion makers in the mass media. But I will agree with you that things have gotten better for Polish Americans in comparison to the 1970's.

As for Indians and Blacks, especially blacks, blacks have almost nothing to worry about as far as their media image.

Just about every action movie, Lawyer movie, Police movie, army movie, hero movie, you name it, the authority figure/good guy/hero, etc is a black guy. They are fortunate that the mass media has a lot of sympathy for them.

Life / What is the reason for POLISH jokes ? [486]

This is a typical Polish American story. Nothing unusual.

This is true.

Your story sounds similar to my Polish American family.

Many of the Polish Americans I know are educated professionals. Those without college educations gravitate towards starting their own business.

As a Polish American I would guess that you also know that Polish Americans own more real estate per capita then the average American.

Also in the book "The Jewish Phenomenon", Polish Americans on a per capita basis are the third wealthiest group in the US behind Jewish Americans and Japanese Americans.

According to page 5 of the book "The Jewish Phenomenon"

Ethnic Household Income (US Average 100)

Jewish 172
Japanese 132
Polish 115

Chinese 112
Italian 112
German 107

Anglo-Saxon 107
Irish 103

US Average100

Filipino 99
W. Indian 94
Mexican 76

Puerto Rican 63
Black 62
Native American 60

Polish jokes don't come from Nazi's or Native Americans. they came from the Polish Americans because they recognized the "old ways". Now what's true for Poles was also true for the Irish, Italians, Norwegians, etc.

I agree with part of what you say.

As you say, these early jokes applied to many other ethnic groups that came here also. The people of a given ethnic group that settled first in America would "poke fun" at newcomers of the same group since they weren't as assimilated. These jokes were based mostly on the struggles of newcomers trying to assimilate.

Also many of these early jokes weren't as malicious as the Hollywood-TV 1960's-70's inferior intelligence jokes about Polish people.

Many of these first Polish jokes from Polish Americans were about Polish language nuiances, Pierogis and Kielbasa.

Polish jokes revolving around assimilation problems, Kielbasa, Pierogis didn't come from the Nazis, but the more aggressive subhuman intelligence jokes about Poles did. They are in Hitler's speeches. But not just the Nazis. The origin of so called US Polish jokes (subhuman intelligence jokes about Polish people) was largely by the 1960's Leftist anti-Polish Bigots in the Hollywood TV Network complex. They were basically media jokes about Polish people which reflected the hatred they had for Polish people.

You say these Polish jokes supposedly came from assimilated Poles against newcomer Poles. If this is true, how do you explain these 1960's-70's Polish jokes being told in areas of the US where there were NO Polish Americans?

How do you explain people in opposite parts of the country, telling the exact SAME inferior intelligence joke about Polish people to other people? On the same day?........The day after an anti-Polish TV show had that slur against Polish people.

Polish jokes, far as I know where dead by the late 70's. I haven't heard many since. The latest type of Polish Jokes are the "Redneck Jokes". Same thing.

Polish jokes have declined because Polish American groups have spoken out against them.

Although they are still around, especially among people who feel a need to put down somebody else so that they can feel better about their own ethnicity, you are correct that today inferior intelligence jokes about Polish people are nowhere as common today as they were in the 1970's when the media airwaves were saturated with them.

A couple years ago Sen. Arlen Specter apologized for telling Polish jokes (some say that was part of the reason for his recent loss). Back in the 1970's when mass TV media imagery influenced millions of Americans that it was politically correct to slander Polish people with ethnic slurs/jokes, he may not have apologized.

News / Poland - the least liked German neighbour. [210]

We are neighbours....we share nearly two millennia history...our people are mixed greatly...it wasn't all bad...Poland has alot of german heritage in their history and vice versa. We share the same interests...our both people want freedom and prosperity...we should be close!

I agree with you. Its just common sense that there has been at some level a connection between Germany and Poland, especially along the border area. There are quite a few intermarriages in this area. I agree with you that things have not always been bad between Germany and Poland.

Fortunately in 2010, I think relations between Germany and Poland are not that bad considering all the past tension. This should not be taken for granted by either Poles or Germans. Nothing's perfect and I believe that time will help heal things more as it already has to a cerain degree.

On a personal note, Poles like my grandmother, had a German last name, spoke fluent German, but she was 100% Polish. So that says something about the interaction and understanding that Poles and Germans had for one another at a certain level, since afterall they are neighbors.

Who years ago would have thought that some of the most popular German soccer players are of Polish ancestry? LOL

Out of curiosity, what percentage of Germans think like you and would like to see more of a coming together between Germans and Poles?

(At least closer than with far away countries whose nice words account for nothing if pushes come to shove)

That's an interesting comment.

Do you have any examples in mind?

Torq there is more to this Polish article.

Although the German media may not be perfect in portraying Poles and there has been some residual negativity passed down from some older Germans to younger Germans, the articles says that the Germans with the most negative attitude towards Poles are the ones FURTHEST away from Poland with no contact with Poles.

It also says, Germans near the border of Poland and who know Poles have a better impression of Poles then Germans who don't know Poles.

I suppose the opposite is also true.
