Food / Irish or English breakfast tea in Poland? [11]

Irish tea like Barry's

Is quite strong. At Breakfast time its traditional to have about half a Pig on a plate with gallons of tea (Milk and sugar) to turn the meat to leather inside you.

After Breakfast tes is almost always taken with sugar and milk and biscuits to dip into it.

s

All tea is vile but Irish Tea is less vile than English Tea:)

I prefer Coffee, putting milk or sugar in Coffee is a criminal offence the only addition to Coffee should be Whiskey and floating cream.

Life / Let`s compare prices of services and products in Poland [359]

When I make my own, I use only spring water and fruit from the greenest regions of the country.

That’s always a good policy you are what you drink:):)

The best thing that I got from Poland besides my Aronia bush ( which by the way is now grown by a lot of other plot holders from cuttings ) is spiritus, cant get it now because of the liquid limit on flights..

You can buy it here known as Polish spirit but is so massively expensive its not viable.

Do you own a large strawberry field forever?

A large allotment but fortunately I'm not immortal.

you can buy all kinds of wine today

Yeah I used to make my own wine, perhaps I wasn’t too good at it and you can buy better wine for not much more than home made

The cheapest sugar at Tesco - 1.6 pounds per kilogram

My mate buys a lot of sugar for the bees, about £1 for 1.2 kilos in poundland
poundland.co.uk/product-range/a-z/1-25kg-sugar

You have to search for cheap dry goods but most people just shop in the big supermarkets.

Buying 10 kilos of sugar can only mean feeding bees over the winter or wine:):)

Walnuts are very expensive here but people really only buy them at Halloween or Christmas in small quantities.

Most produce like strawberries etc are bought in small punnets for crazy prices (£2 for a handful), they are very expensive. I get a lot of favours (usually wine) cos I give kilos of stuff away

Off-Topic / Loading a photo of Poland from your mobile/cell phone takes 30 seconds, come on! [86]

One could buy a good PC/laptop and a £100 smartphone that does more and still have change.

This is my point.
Get stuff that does the job and dont spend a bean more.

I could buy a modern TV for eg but I dont need to or want to. The kids have better phones and laptops than me but I have better carrots and spuds than them:)

I use an old laptop running XP have a big TV and a mobile held together with sellotape still use a record player................why do we have to buy into the consumer culture?

I don’t give a sh1t for facebook or 50 types of toothpaste I usually text "home in 10 mins four spuds for dinner" and watch films on me big TV, fit for purpose is the phrase

History / The beginning of the Polish state [11]

I always read Poland was christened in 966.

How do Polish people view the period before then, I know something of the Bronze age and Iron age but not a lot about immediately before.

History / What do nations of the world owe to Poland and Polish people? [58]

During the commonwealth with its huge Orthodox population relations were not exactly cosy with dare I say mother Russia.
Pawian what I'm saying is the scope of the thread just seemed huge from Slavic relations, the east west schism, especially "what if histories" and discussions about technological developments.

History / What do nations of the world owe to Poland and Polish people? [58]

E.g., do you know how many times Poles saved Europe`s ass from barbarians?

Yes Polish people played a part

Religion doesnt lead to a natural alliance but if it did would the orthodox alliance have had the numbers or military technology and if so when. At which point in history would the conquest have occured?. The response of these places after the Black Death (welcoming migrants) would suggest they didn't have the numbers

News / 1.3% birth rate = Poland's slow death [221]

Nuclear energy is much more clear and cheap.

The decommissioning of nuclear power stations, the storage of the waste plus insurance costs are all underwritten by government. Without these subsidies no private company could possibly make a profit from nuclear.

Bull... Your farmers would be unable to compete on the international market, thats all.

Agricultural subsidies distort the market and make food cheaper than it would be.

Nuclear energy is a whole different ball game. Much more complicated and risky.

And massively more expensive, nuclear can only exist with government subsidies too cheap to meter was a good slogan but nothing more

Remember oil just doesn't provide energy.

It’s been said that it’s too important to burn in engines

And the government has made food far more expensive in return for having more of it.

This is not true, food is more expensive (relatively) in places where its not subsidised.
In the US people would starve if the agricultural sector were not propped up by government.

Study / What subjects are taught as general ed in average Polish highschools? [8]

Most are underinvested so it is mainly theory

Yes
I went to a Catholic school which were not entirely funded by the state in a working class area and we did some practical but not a lot. I found this a disadvantage when at university compared with other kids from different areas.

Making 1860 posts in PF allows you to do a little hijacking.

**** that many:):)
I thought I was a lurker:)

because it's forbidden by law to let them play with chemicals

I heard this....well not the law part. Now that you have graduated do you think a bit of practical work would have helped you?

I also heard that there is no practical work in University either.

Hope I haven't hijacked this thread

News / Poles, Polonians and aliens on Pussy Riot? [182]

Barney,if that happened here there would be an outcry.

The ***** Riot jailing?

States are free to assist cultural and civic institutions (so why not religious ones?).

Because they can make an economic case for helping (or not) these organisations, with religious bodies the state would have to make a value judgment based on intangible beliefs. Which religion(s) would they have to exclude from largesse?

the in vetro debate

It’s a difficult one but I believe that the church has a right to express its views and hope that this committee will see sense and allow state funding. It’s illogical to allow privately financed IVF but deny the same procedure to others.

***** riot broke the law, the penalty seems harsh but that's their law system.

I agree with this harsh but to be expected.

I believe the protest was not really well thought out just a general unfocused rage against the machine type of thing that they knew would land them in trouble, they are not martyrs.

Yes lecturers must exercise caution for the reasons you state but I see the position that churches claim and the state recognises as placing a special onus upon them to exercise reticence in overt political matters. In moral matters the church can speak as it wishes and is often ignored (Capital punishment and sexual abstinence are two such areas that pop to mind)
