Life / What is the reason for POLISH jokes ? [486]

Did you hear about the Polak who threw the grenade? The American picked it up, unclipped it and threw it back :) Boom! An American taught me this one :)

12PLN, ouch! I can buy 4 bottles of decent beer for that here :) Spending power is not the name of the game here in Silesia. Tradition is. Regional food and dialect :)

Warsaw is not seen as a vibrant city by other Poles I have talked to. A remarkable recovery from WWII? Yes. Dynamic? No.

It's a matter of preference. Wisła is a nice retreat!

Piotr and Paweł is here :)

I heard about that, wildrover. They are having to jump into cold water just to cool down. I had 38 degree heat and HAD to open a window. I was sweating like a black accused on an all-white jury!

Be sure to bring plenty of fans and ice packs :)

what's your partner's name, kp? ;)

Poland is still quite warm at night. It's 18 but it feels like more.

UK, Ireland / What's the rule on 'the UK' but just 'GB'? [60]

Yes, I understand that but it doesn't change the fact that it's an umbrella term for 5 islands. Classifications can be upgraded or modernised :)

News / Poles and rest of us needs strong Poland [49]

At a functional level, the EU strengthens Poland, Crow. At a geopolitical level, well, that remains to be seen. With PO, Poland is well and truly onboard the EU train and gaining momentum. It is getting stronger but must be careful when it comes to gas deals with Russia. Currency-wise, Poland is doing fine when compared to many others.

History / Endecja - State Sponsored Anti Semitism 1935 - 1939. [138]

It would be fair to describe it as a movement and not an outright party. It was a time when playing on sentiments was high and Dmowski pushed it through literature and appealing to those that were disillusioned with Piłsudski, of course pre-1935. Some might have felt, at that time, that the Jews were overextending their welcome and being a little too demanding but this is just based on stories I have heard.

It makes more sense to talk of a self-sufficient Poland. Poland's strength doesn't come solely from within and that should be borne in mind. The EU plays a key role in that.

UK, Ireland / What's the rule on 'the UK' but just 'GB'? [60]

Do I detect an imperialistic follow-up? ;)

Another one in which flexibility rules is 'the piano' and 'piano'. This one is not so clear-cut.

I wrote a complete sheet to this but it is at work somewhere. Hotels are an interesting case too. Those luxurious chains tend to take 'the'. The Ritz, The Marriott, The Sheraton etc etc.

Wrocław lives in Wrocław and I wouldn't imagine him to be unemployable ;)

Some of what Sheila said was true and provoking is a sure-fire way of generating responses.

UK, Ireland / What's the rule on 'the UK' but just 'GB'? [60]

Well, the logic can be put to the test. Japan is a group of 5 islands but we don't say 'the Japan'.

Holland isn't a geographic region?

Universities are also an interesting case, e.g the University of Abertay, but Aberdeen University.

UK, Ireland / What's the rule on 'the UK' but just 'GB'? [60]

Because a kingdom is sth specific where we can use the. GB is just the name of the country without it being sth like a kingdom. The rules are filled with exceptions as I've taught this many times.

Sometimes you just need to take the bull by the horns and go up to them. It depends what kind of bar it is. There is a place here where it would be easy. Nothing ventured, nothing gained!

I don't do that kind of thing as I've never, for as long as I can remember, been interested in chasing girls. I always went out to unwind, have a chat with the lads and maybe play some pool. The vanity of girls is a major turnoff, frankly! I can imagine them sneering and tittering like they did. Wastes of space, really!

I'd love to be tucked away in some mountain hut somewhere, doing a lot of nothing! I've experienced them in Zakopane and also in Stoszek/Wisła. Great places to recharge the batteries! Poles don't forget to do this :)

History / Warsaw Uprising - The Forgotten Soldiers [117]

Partitions take many forms, BB. Try to understand the underpinning rationale for them.

Time changes things, right? I don't recall Poland declaring war, they didn't initiate it. A simple but salient point!

History / Endecja - State Sponsored Anti Semitism 1935 - 1939. [138]

There was a move away from the excellent efforts of Piłsudski but it really wasn't so fervent until close to the 1970's. How many times must it be stated? Poland was largely neutral to the Jews for so long. There was some anti-Semitic sentiment, yes, but state sponsored? Come off it!

History / Warsaw Uprising - The Forgotten Soldiers [117]

Quite pathetic history?? What is that supposed to mean?

What fully German city, Gdańsk? Read the history from 966, BB. We've been through this.
