Life / Moving to Poland - Checklist / Things to Consider [33]

very good and valid points. The first time I moved to Poland, 14 years ago - I basically had no idea what to expect, I didn't plan a thing- I was young and naive. The second time we moved here- now 8 years ago (I have lived here a total of 10 years --2 and 8) I knew what to expect, I knew the city and I knew a bit of the language and culture- making this time around more enjoyable.

Another thing- for those who live in UK or Europe it is so easy to hop on a cheap flight and in two hours you are back to your native land. I have friends who even make the drive. Those of us across the pond have more of a hassle with time and cost just to make it into North America and then dealing with jet lag.

But you have listed many things for those considering making the move to think about.

Real Estate / Poland's apartment prices continue to fall [1844]

Demand comes from corporations seeking regional offices in eastern Europe, banks, insurance and accounting companies, and"quite a big pharmaceutical sector," he said.

from the article. and very important. and this is why housing has not had a drastic drop in Warsaw. There are companies still investing in Poland with their head offices in Warsaw- and they hire locally and pay well by Polish standards- at least 3500 starting- in turn people are buying flats and getting out of the old blocks.

Life / Is it McPoland? [63]

it is written on the package of apples. it is a chemical that is added so they don't turn brown.

I have a friend who used to work at mcd's when we were in high school. horror stories.

the fruits and veg at mcd's have had a preservative added to them to keep them fresh longer.

honestly, mcd's has no redeeming qualities. from their foods to their business practices- they are as revolting as it gets with walmart coming in a close second.

Life / Is it McPoland? [63]

My daughter's school were going to the kids out for a day on a school trip and we looked on the list of where they were taking them and one of the places was Mczhithole - all the parents got together and were really angry and wrote a letter saying there are far better places to take them that hole and got them to change their minds.
In the end they were taken to a house museum and had a picnic in the grounds of the museum watching folk dancing which in my mind is much better than forcing that crap down them.

this is funny- the same thing happened to my eldest daughter. They were going to Wilanow and McD's for an ice cream after. I wrote a letter saying that there were a good number of ice cream places at Wilanow- why McD's? I told them my kids don't eat McD's and told them politely why- I also said that she is allowed to have ice cream for one of the other locations at Wilanow.

I find it comical because seemingly intelligent people who send their kids to private school- literally have no idea what goes into the food at McD's.

I see your point. I am just anti fast food. I have seen what it has done to the west. I have read books about the "business" of fast food- how the meat is slaughtered as well as the working conditions. McDonalds has single handedly changed the way beef is reared. It is revolting.

We haven't eaten any fast food in over 7 years--and don't miss it at all. I don't even think about eating it as an option. There are people in my husbands office who eat KFC (kids fattening centre) every day for lunch. I make my lunch every day and take it to work- it is all about effort. Personally, I would rather stand in a line up behind some old granny than eat McDonalds- but to each their own.

Mcdonalds food is crappy and full of chemicals, but when you need a quick bite, it won't kill you.

yes it will. it is easier, cheaper and healthier to go to a corner store and get fresh buns and some cheese- if you need a quick bite. The problem is that Poles want this food. I go to the seaside most weekends in the summer. The amount of fat people on the beach is about 95% more than what it was 10 years ago. This is thanks to fast food culture- mcdonalds, kfc- which is thought to be healthier because it is chicken, frozen pizza, food from a box- pre packaged food. It is disgusting.

Polish children eat far too many sweets- never in my life have I seen so many children with black teeth. It is revolting.

Law / Rights of a consumer when dealing with faulty goods in Poland? [65]

this happened to us before. i don't understand why all electrical in this flipping country breaks down. do we get grade b electronics? anyway. do you speak Polish? this would be helpful- but throwing English around may work too. But that said, they are pretty useless and will probably shift the blame. we had something take 3 months. it was pathetic.

i would simply call them or visit them regularly until they figure out that you are serious. in our situation my husband gave them a blast- it didn't do anything.

Study / Cost of a private Pre-School in Poland [4]

depends where you live. Preschools in Warsaw run from 700 to about 1500 per month.

in your town they are probably cheaper. still cheaper is the public preschool system (free). Preschool will be a huge chunk of your budget- particularly if you don't work.

UK, Ireland / Polish woman living in England is moving back to Poland. How much money do I need? [87]

ok- I will give you an example of life in Warsaw. Yesterday I did the groceries at Tesco. I don't buy food in a box. Only fresh fruits, veg, meats and bread. No soup from a box or any other fake garbage. I also bought laundry detergent and softener and the tablets for my dishwasher. My total bill was 600 pln. This is for a family of four. I only buy turkey or chicken, on occasion we will have ribs or sausages.

This bill was more expensive because of the cleaning supplies. Normally, I pay about 400 pln every week for groceries. My car is really good on gas. I fill up probably about once every 2 and a half to 3 weeks. I also have a short drive to work.

You could find cheaper groceries in Kalisz. I shop at Tesco or Simply because it is close to my house and it is easier- one stop shopping.

Our internet is 100 pln per month- unlimited. We have Polsat cyfrowy but I don't know how much it is and of course cell phone.

I still think 3000 pln is the bare minimum.

suck it milky- just because you will settle in your life doesn't mean everybody else should.

aim higher.

mcdonalds is revolting. and everything it stands for. it has single handedly changed the way meat is manufactured the world over. and worst of all Polish people love it. they are eating their piece of the U.S. with every big mac they stuff in their hole. As a result- the Polish population has gotten fatter at an alarming rate. it is too bad that Poland didn't look to the west to see what not to do.

I think perhaps your reading comprehension needs a bit of work. Go back and read it and make sure it is in context with what is being written on that page.

Real Estate / Poland's apartment prices continue to fall [1844]

whatever, slag me all you want. Fact is I know all about property in Warsaw and the fact there is no bubble. And all those that are claiming there is a bubble seem to not own any property in this country anyway. I guess I will just keep making wise decisions and increase our portfolio while those that claim there is a bubble own nothing.

I have posted numerous times links that claim what I say- of course nobody acknowledges them. Again that is fine. A few years from now while our properties are creating an income for us- I will be proven right.

and that is cool by me.

Real Estate / Poland's apartment prices continue to fall [1844]

why is it so difficult for people to understand that the price is falling to reach the levels of what they should have been in the first place. it is not a fecking crash.

If the price in the first place was inflated over 80% and then it falls 80% to a more realistic price--does not make it a crash. If the prices fall 100% then it is a crash of 20% under what the price should have been. we are not there yet and no matter how many times chicken feckin little says the sky is falling- doesn't mean it is.
