News / Demonstrations in Poland in defence of democracy. [2554]

Would't go there even if they paid me.

You're a thousand miles away and they don't pay people to go anyway.

Public demonstrations organised by KOD - Saturday 19 December at 12:00 (local time) unless otherwise mentioned

Another good turnout in Warsaw.

News / How would Poland change for the better (or worse) under a PiS government? [257]

the fact that KOD used a drone to show their crowd while PiS can't produce any evidence says it all.

That and the photos, the estimates and the truth.

And on the Sunday 'counter-demonstration' the bods from out of town all just jumped of the coaches they were bussed in on and went straight to the shopping centres, leaving a very tiny pro-PiS/anti-democracy rabble to actually march.

News / "We will not hesitate to shoot Kaczyński dead" - KOD Facebook page [164]

We're going nowhere. This is our country.

Quite. Interesting that with all the lies (like the incident ever ended in the thread title) and false rhetoric emerging from the PiS flappers there's nothing at all about "foreign subversives". Why? Aside from the pro-democracy rallies being entirely legal and far from subversive, almost none of the participants are foreign - they are all Poles. Poles of the best sort.

And if you think it's a sign of unimaginable wealth, perhaps you'd like to tell us how much your properties are worth?

It isn't much at all in the scheme of things - nothing to boast about, certainly.

A huge number of people in Poland are asset-rich but cash-poor

A further example of how terrified they are - all they can do is resort to skullduggery.

Therefore, drones must be banned in order to prevent the information getting out.

Basically yes - but they daren't ban news helicopters - or dare they?

Plus of course photos taken from the windows of flats etc.

News / US air base to be in Poland [193]

at's exactly what will happen to Poland if it gas US and NATO bases on its soil.

It is anyway.

The consequences would be to great for Russia to even consider it.

That, JohnnyReb, is the reason both sides have them. Mutually assured destruction, the ultimate deterrent.

News / US air base to be in Poland [193]

With any military planning issue, it all depends on what they can and can't achieve under appalling circumstances.

The USSR had ballistic missiles aimed at most of the population centre's of Europe and Russia may well have that even now.

In those cold war days, one of the biggest US bases was about 3 or 4 miles from my home - great for a kid to watch all the planes but very much a prime target for nuking by the Russians.

If they weren't bothered, the Dear Leader Chairman Kaczyński wouldn't have abused and insulted the 82% of adult Poles that didn't vote for them

Possibly his biggest mistake.

It's exactly these constant insults - "traitors", "Gestapo" and so on - that are helping put so many people on the streets

They aren't doing themselves any favours, are they?

Basically it's shock and fear. They didn't expect that ordinary people would stand up against them and they just can't handle that.

Russia

Well Crowie, Europe including Poland doesn't have to defend itself from any threat from Guatemala or Laos, does it....

i can hardly imagine that Poland refuse US air bases

With the threat that is Russia being so close, why would they possibly refuse?

There was also a small group of PiS supporters

Basically sniping is all they can do - they're just bitter and afraid right now. And yes, the coverage in the non-Polish language media is enraging them.

But when both the stock exchange and the zloty plummeted, comment and reportage are entirely appropriate. I gather The Economist has another big article planned.

News / Demonstrations in Poland in defence of democracy. [2554]

there are over 20 separate demonstrations on Saturday

Which is quite remarkable really. A nuisance that it's so close to Christmas, but at the moment it looks like they'll be a regular thing.

Life / Blood donation in Poland [21]

And ironically drinking the spinal fluid of 100 infected cows would probably harm you less than eating a cheap kielbasa.

Blood transfusion authorities are entitled to make whatever rules they like - most however screen the blood.

News / Don't let Poland become like my country, France. [630]

I don't wish to see a far right party in France, Poland, Britain or anywhere for that matter

Exactly, which is all the more reason for normal, decent people to come out to vote. France has long had a problem with Poujadistes but at least they have been defeated.

Look at UKIP in the UK, or the PSL in the elections in Poland last year.

And in France they have these weird results in the first round and common sense prevail in the second.

Doesn't everyone like the French??!?

The task now is to reduce the appeal of the fascists and get more ordinary people out to vote, especially in the regions where they did well.

You apparently are out of sync with the developing European-wide Zeigeis

And..
They didn't win even one single region. People turned out to vote in order to ensure that the fascists didn't get in - and it worked. Common sense restored and good to see people working together.
