USA, Canada / American...Polish Resident...Returning to the land of milk and honey [103]

Beckski, why don't you move back?

Can't do it. I'm an American citizen. I work and own my home in the United States. Most of my immediate family members live here too. Being a a California girl, don't know if I'd survive even one cold winter in Poland. However, I wouldn't mind returning sometime in the near future, for a visit to beautiful Poland, along with my wonderful family members living there.

Life / Your Polish friends - why do you regard them as such? [41]

Your Polish friends - why do you regard them as such?

Probably because they were borned and raised in Poland. They still pronounce words in English with a nice Polish accent. I especially like hearing when they pronounce the letter W, with the sound of the letter V. They may say, "Vee are coming over." Sounds much cuter instead of saying, We are coming over:)

Life / Golden Wedding in Poland, the protocol for giving gift for a wedding? [58]

They are planning to make a long trip abroad so they are asking money as a wedding present.

The same situation occurred for my cousin's wedding. She had requested funds for their honeymoon trip to Australia, instead of a more traditional wedding gift. My family members and I each gave the bridal couple a hundred dollars.

Food / Polish Preserves, any recipes? [14]

Polish Preserves, any recipes?

I'm in search of a Polish rose jam preserve recipe. My Great-Aunt Janka makes the jam from roses, grown in her Polish garden. She wouldn't give me the recipe. She says the recipe can only be successful, by using authentic Polish roses!!!

Life / Car or no car to commute in Warszawa? (Warsaw) [13]

But I do remember Poles are terrible discourteous drivers

That's putting it politely. My sis & I had to run for our lives a couple different times, while crossing the street in Warszawa.

UK, Ireland / I need help!! (problems with my Polish coworkers) [41]

But Ewa & Anna can swear at us in polish and get away with on the grounds of racism/discrimination.

Tell your supervisor about their swearing. Sounds like they should be confronted and written up for their malicious behavior.

Smell my finger

Southern may be a volunteer to take a whiff!

Travel / My friends advise me not to go to Warsaw because people are horrible there? [30]

not to go to Warsaw because people are horrible there?

My experience in Warsaw was very pleasant. Most people I met were polite and helpful. I wasn't sure which bus to take back to my hotel, from the park. Some college students I had met were very helpful. They had spoken to me in English, describing the correct bus route for me to follow. The also wrote down the number of the bus for me to board.

Genealogy / Is Aleska a Polish baby name ? [42]

Can anyone help?

Alicja is also a very pretty Polish name. I've always liked the name Basia (even if it doesn't start with the letters Al.)

UK, Ireland / Cultural misunderstandings - Polish and English [26]

Cultural misunderstandings

When the first McDonald's restaurant opened in Moscow, the employees were instructed to smile at their customers. Many of the customers had misunderstood the gesture. They felt as though their smiles, were symbolic of being ridiculed or laughed at.

USA, Canada / My story. Born In the USA - do I have a chance in Poland, my Mother Country? [69]

California was like a foreign Country

A vast majority of California, has suffered many drastic changes, throughout the recent years.

Mother Country?

Exactly one year from today, I boarded my first flight to Poland. There's nothing that can describe the sensation I felt, when I first stepped foot on Polish soil. I can hardly wait, until I finally have the opportunity, to revisit the motherland again :)

Language / Double meanings, Polish slang and embarrassment [49]

embarrassment

With the way I sometimes mispronounce words in Polish; I'll probably never order a pizza in Poland. Don't even want to open that can of worms!

UK, Ireland / Worst of the worst Poles emigrating to Britain? [32]

It's variant is to be seen in a Cheech and Chong movie in which Cheech tells the monolingual Chong that a certain Spanish cuss-word means "friends".

P-ndejo... Kind of like when blacks refer to one another, as the N word. It's supposedly meant to be said, strictly in a friendly manner? Go figure!

Food / Where can you buy a crockpot aka slow cooker, in Krakow? [38]

Where can you buy a crockpot aka slow cooker, in Krakow?

Crockpots may be found, at a Thrift Shop or store selling used small appliances.

The woman can prepare the crock pot, go to work, bring home the boczek, and still have a nice dinner prepared for the man. In America.

You mean visa versa...

Travel / Whats your favourite Polish city and why? [132]

Whats your favourite Polish city and why?

So far I've only visited 3 cities in Poland. I pick Lublin as my favorite city so far ( I may change my mind after I finally visit Krakow.)

Reasons I love Lublin: A large portion of my family is from and still live there. Friendly and charming people. Great architecture & fabulous old buildings. Polish street festivals and a killer outdoor market :)

Polish women USED TO BE much more attractive:

(Now's a good time to get this thread back on topic. It isn't supposed to be a thread about overweight people.)

Here's some photos showing how attractive Polish women used to be:

First photo is Miss Polonia 1957, Alicja Bobrowska. She now lives in Southern California. She is in her seventies and keeps busy as a local artist:)

Second photo is Martha Stewart from a billion years ago; when she was a Chanel model.
