History / Poland Lithuania - current relations [124]

The rich would benefit in every country-they always did. However in terms of Politics, almost certainly the Poles. The Emperor's power would be quite limited in Poland because of the nature of the Polish constitution, and he would have to go out of his way to please the Poles. One of the benefits could have been a larger standing army and a more centralized state, which would mean that the Poles would be more capable of offering resistance to countries with bigger armies in the 17th century.

History / Poland Lithuania - current relations [124]

but Austria gave us a nice **** you after we saved Vienna and then they partitoned the land.

Yes they did, but you have to remember that at the time we would have carried some clout in the marriage, and would have been their equal at the very least. On the negative side we would probably have become entangled in the internecine conflict between the German sates, and the political chaos that was the Holy Roman Empire. However with a union of Poland, Austria, Hungary, and Bohemia-guess who would hold the greatest sway?

History / 1920 Battle of Warsaw - English trailer and film [55]

Can't wait!

A war movie in 3 D, should be great(: Although i thought there was a thread on this somewhere else already. Though I have got to say, i am not sure if I like the male lead actor-i think they could have easily found somebody much, much better.

History / Poland Lithuania - current relations [124]

No. Lithuania could choose.

And so could Poland. The Polish nobles rejected the entreaties of the Habsburg Emperor to marry Jadwiga-and told him to go home, in favour of Jagielo. If they knew how small minded the Lithuanians would become, I am sure they would have chosen union with the Habsburg Empire instead.

News / Poland Parliament elections in October 2011 [944]

Well I had go on the previous thread, and I must say the result was a lot more optimistic for PO. So unfortunately I am going to have stick to my original prediction, otherwise you would find out that I have changed my mind, so here it goes:

PO-45%
PIS-27%
SLD-14%
PSL-7%

If the turn out happens to be really big, than PO should do quite well. Your percentages add up to 82%, which would mean that 18% of people would have to vote for parties other than the ones you have put down-I think that is a bit too optimistic for the minor parties. I think that it is likely to be closer to 10%.

History / What do Poles owe to Russians? [193]

The Russians were the inspiration for the following song: Hej strzelcy-and the following words

pl.wikisource.org/wiki/Hej_strzelcy_wraz

So I guess the Poles owe them for the inspiration for the song.

But you certainly do realise that the Australian system is obsolete? :):):):)

You are right, only two other countries vote that way. I just find the whole idea of getting fined when you fail to vote so undemocratic.

Nope. In Polish elections, you put a CROSS (!) next to ONE candidate only!

I see, thanks for the clarification(:

I am too used to the Australian system.

However, I don`t know much about the rest. Should I? I am going to vote Gowin only.

Not really, I made my decisions based on their profiles and qualifications. If I had the chance to vote I would probably vote all the way down to number 10. In Australia if you don't put in a preference for every party on the list your vote doesn't count-what is more voting is compulsory in Australia.

I do like the concept of the map that you can click on to look up your local candidate-it seems that PIS has one as well so you can compare the pair and see which candidate you like better.

In Krakow I support Jarosław Gowin, No 3 on the list of PO candidates.

Yes he seems like a really placid genuine guy, what about the rest of the ticket/list?

This would be my top 10 in your district:

1. Jerzy Fedorowicz
2. Jarosław Gowin
3. Ireneusz Raś
4. Małgorzata Jantos
5. Katarzyna Matusik-Lipiec
6. Lidia Gądek
8. Jacek Krupa
9. Józef Lassota
10. Katarzyna Bielańska

News / 4th Polish Republic may re-emerge [244]

I respect Kaczyński because I believe he's sincere in his attempts at making Poland a better country (and the most logical way to do it is to make it to the government don't you think) - and I respect him because I tend to agree with most of his diagnoses of Poland's ills

So according to your logic, sincerity trumps competence?

too afraid to even answer simple questions.

Really? Perhaps they don't like conversing with an idiot from a country on the ass side of the world by the name of Chile-just a thought.

Latin American

Coming from Latin America, you have honestly got to have some cheek.

Have you ever actually read a history book about Poland, or done any research at all about the country before embarking on your trip? It's only a rhetorical question by the way.

I honestly think that the plane crash that killed his twin brother was not a coincidence

This once sentence alone illustrates the ridiculousness of the rest of the observations.

The 1930s guidebook

Why would you browse a 1930's guidebook for a country in the 21st century?

Russian (tsarist, not soviet) architecture

Quite funny,ever been to Russia?

Today, in 2011 things have changed a little

Just a little-really?

I certainly will. And I am taking my wife who shares my views and we are taking our grandparents who will vote PO too because they say:

I wish my Polish family was as compliant(:

for those of you of a logical and intelligent persuasion, here is a link that will assist you in finding out who your local PO candidate is. All you have to DO is click on the map and find your okreg. This way you can compare their qualifications and competencies-I notice that PIS has no such link. actually if you compare PO's website it is infinitely better than the PIS website.

platforma.org/wybory/kandydaci

So do you know who your candidate is or in what order you will vote PAWIAN?

News / 4th Polish Republic may re-emerge [244]

IF PIS WINS, WILL THE LAST PERSON IN POLAND PLEASE TURN OUT THE LIGHTS!

It will be like the village pauper/drunk running the local parish again.

Don't panic though, because the OP's knowledge of Polish politics and generally all things Polish is so **** poor, that he has know idea that PIS only gained 14% of the popular vote among young university students-compared to 52% for PO in the pra prawybory(:

Life / The Blame Game (Have you ever noticed that a Polish person is never wrong!?) [205]

No offence, but you are the guys best friend, , so whose side of the story would you take anyway? If what you say is true that she left him because he had no job, I fail to see how their managed to stay together for 23 years in the first place-there must be more to the story than you brought up.

It would be also interesting to see how "successful" Poland would be if the UK immediately deported every Pole who has come over since 2004. We know it will never happen, but it would still be interesting to see what would happen if it did ;)

You say it as though you would love to see i happen.

Life / The Blame Game (Have you ever noticed that a Polish person is never wrong!?) [205]

Have you ever noticed that a Polish person is never wrong!!!!

No offence, but you sound terribly bitter-it seems to me that you are magnifying your personal problems onto the national picture.

And BTW-I lived in several countries and likewise haven't come across a government employee who willingly owns up to a mistake-this isn't a Polish thing, it is very much universal.

I still have a flat in Barcelona and may go back there. At least I will be able to watch decent football. Its not cheap to live there, but Poland is heading the same way and at least the Winters are not that bad.

If the land of the 20% unemployed and maniana takes your fancy-why not go for it.

And for what's it worth, maybe apart for the German government, perhaps even Sweden-I don't think that Europe has a better government than the one led by PO.

News / Polish Students Striking in Lithuania [80]

Yeah that's an interesting article, I didn't realize the Lithuanian government was required to consult the
Polish minority before they made any changes.

It is interesting for the fact, if taken at face value, That the Lithuanian government is clearly treating the Polish minority as second class citizens.

Still in a country like Lithuania where they have only about 4 million people I don't really care if they don't
want to suit the needs of minority languages. I mean how many people in the world even speak Lithuanian...

I don't think that is the point, the fact that even its elite wouldn't speak Lithuanian and chose to speak Polish instead is quite revealing in itself.

any info po englishski on this one?

There are a few interesting articles on the topic in the Economist.

News / Polish Students Striking in Lithuania [80]

Here is a video of the strike. I like the bit how they sang the Rota-nie damy ziemi.

Did I really just lurch into it? I read an article about it online, I think in Rzeczpospolita, just thought it was interesting.
Is there something I'm missing? How is my conclusion that ignorant?

It concerns Lithuania ignoring Polish minority rights under EU law, whilst Poland fulfilling its obligations towards Lithuania's minority in Poland.

A good article about the issue:

It is said that we do not know the Lithuanian language that we can not ascend to higher education. After all, statistics indicate that our young people ran onto a great state language - says Miroslaw Szejbak , coordinator of the Parent Forum Polish Schools in Lithuania.

Agnieszka Filipiak : According to estimates by the Electoral Action of Poles in Lithuania to schools with Polish language of instruction did not go today, more than 80 percent . students.

Language / Czech language sounds like baby talk to most Poles. Similarities? [222]

I rolled with laughter over a Czech girl admiring a baby: "Taki papulaty babulinek!"

I almost rolled in laughter when I read that as well. LOL(:

It sounds more like Russian and Serbo-Croatian than Polish does.

I would totally agree with that, especially the V sounding words-a lot of similarities with Russian.

News / Poland Parliament elections in October 2011 [944]

Very good question. And what is decent in the first place? Aren't politicians merely a reflection of the society we live in? Don't we get the politicians we all deserve? In the case of PIS, the answer to the last question is a definite no.

News / Poland Parliament elections in October 2011 [944]

simple,I believe them less harmful to Poland than PO.

Really, that's quite extraordinary because if PIS was in power now Poland would be another Greece. May i remind you of some of their polices? All of them urging the government to spend more during the crisis-thank goodness Rostowski ignored them.

That is the problem with some conservative American Poles who left in 1990s and deem themselves great experts who know much better than Poles residing in Poland what is good for us.

It is incredible how bitter he is, I wonder where he gets his news from-I am guessing from family in Poland who constantly tell him how terrible everything is. The worst thing is that he is completely ignorant of the facts and ignores all statistics-and if information doesn't suit his worldview he deems it automatically to have been fabricated.
