News / Demonstrations in Poland in defence of democracy. [2554]

Well, Wulkan, you should remember that the ultra-conservative nationalistic viewpoint that you promote here is rather less popular here in Warsaw than you would like to think.

Sparkling rhetoric as ever, Wulkan, though do tell us how a Soviet dictator relates to this, except insofar as the PiS regime are emulatimg of their tactics on so many levels and in so many ways.

People also cried over Lech Kaczynski too, however probably not that many and I was surprised to see that several flats in my neighbourhood were holding very obvious parties that day.

News / Demonstrations in Poland in defence of democracy. [2554]

Well, it doesn't really 'say' that at all, since the joke is far older than Kijowski himself and not current here in Poland. It wasn't even particular funny decades ago, and in this case, is very far indeed from the truth...

Greggsy, Freedom House organised the trip and arranged the meetings. For all your bluster, back-pedalling and outright tosh, the trip is high profile and a success.

Great that the leader of the Polish pro-democracy movement is in Washington and a very positive green light from the free world.

Glad you're fascinated.

The trip is a high profile one, so doubtless full details will be very well publicised, however asking someone in advance for his itinerary is, Greggsy, so far beyond clutching at straws that it's laughable.

Rather mirroring the impractical and hysterical inanities of the PiS regime.

At least the profile of the Polish pro-democracy movement is being raised internationally which can only be good and the Americans taking an interest is highly positive.

Well Greggs, he has meetings on Capitol Hill and at the State Department, and doubtless these will receive plenty of coverage in the non-regime media here.

BTW, his trip is organised by Freedom House, the U.S.-based group that advocates human rights worldwide.

Life / Is Hale Mirowska in Warsaw a large or small market? [3]

@Blueblackzinc, you went to the wrong part. You should enter from al. Jana Pawla II (the main road, not the side street next to the building) and in fact most of the market stalls that you are probably interested in are in the white single story buildings (to the right as you look at the old and new buildings while standing in front, on the pavement of the main road). You should also go into the market hall behind the supermarket, although there isn't that much there nowadays.

It isn't a very big market (Poland doesn't really do big indoor markets) but there's a decent selection of meat, fruit & veg etc. Try Polna Market (small but good) on ul. Polna for more expensive things or one of the large outdoor markets - Wolumen is the biggest, very close to Metro Wawrzysew; there's also Hala Banacha (an outside market) at the junction of ul. Grojecka and ul. Banacha, maybe Bazar Różyckiego on ul. Targowa (traditionally good for cheap clothes) and there might still be something at ul. Bracia Wagów in Ursynów if it hasn't been built on yet.

Well, Ironside, you're certainly entitled to your opinion, however remote it may be from the facts. Good that the Americans are taking an interest; hopefully another nail in the coffin of the loathed PiS regime...

Life / I suggest a new Poland with gay marriage with universal recognition/passport etc [36]

That is when someone misuses their shlongicker in a twisted manner

A very interesting statement really, ruling out so much of what can be good in the bedroom, francuski miłość etc. As for the practice you inveigh against, many of my straight male friends seem to enjoy that. They certainly talk about it enough. Presumably their wives, partners, girlfriends and assorted ladies enjoy it too.

Why not go to Iran and give it a whirl jon and let us strong minded know how you came out on what is and is not legal.

What, swinging? No thanks. I think it's rather tacky, however if others of whatever sexuality want to, who am I (or anyone else for that matter) to judge...

I tried to tell you a year ago that Poland is not your best choice of places to live to flaunt your homosexuality

How on earth would you know about lifestyles here in Warsaw since you've never been to Poland. BTW, you can "try to tell" anything you like, however twenty happy years here just doesn't bear out even one word of what you're attempting to suggest...

News / GERMANS WANT TO GERMANIZE KOPERNIK (COPERNICUS)! OUTRAGE! [1016]

Kopernik

About Copernicus the jury is very much out. Hard to see how Nietzsche etc 'belong' somewhere simply because they had some (and in Nietzsche' case only some) roots in a different country.

The clown who is more important to the USA than the President of Poland

He's someone they're very interested in. The Kaczynski/Orban thing is rightly seen as a destabilising factor in Europe, unwittingly (perhaps...) playing into the hands of hostile powers so no wonder that Americans are so keen to make a fuss of Kijowkski.

After all, he's a rising star, the leader of the Polish pro-democracy movement as President Wałęsa was before him and quite possibly a future President himself. All it would take is for the Kaczynski regime to try a few more dirty tricks, ideally legal repression (they like that) and I can easily see him popping over to Oslo to pick up an award.

News / Poland -- Europe's only counterweight to Russia [271]

You can't compare Russia with any European country.

Comparing is precisely what you were doing, and of course every country has a "very specific history".

I'm not saying it needs to be run by a dictator, but it surely can't be ruled by a puppet-president, if you know what I mean

Sadly it is run by a dictator right now, however interesting that you value Russia so low that you see only those two alternatives.

Can you prove this?

No need to prove that the free world have not intervened militarily in the invasion. Since they have not. And yes, everything is " all so political". The facts however are black and white. Russia and the Putinists illegally invaded a sovereign state.

homosexuality is unnatural, a perversion, do you agree ?

No, and nor do scientists. What the heck is a "perversion" supposed to be anyway?

Do not take offence, we'll stay friends as usaual, right ?

Why would anyone waste time thinking about a trolling post from some was wingnut who recommends books about ethnicity published by Goebbels?

One can really ask himself how smell of one man`s sh** can be amusing to another man, true?

Is it? Is it really? There's that celebrity cared who apparently likes that sort of thing (though he's straight) and the (almost certainly apocryphal) story about Lisa Stansfield, which I gather she's publicly denied (and finds it funny). About two women or two men doing that short of thing, I've honestly nevrer heard of it. I know Po3 defend seems to have a thing about it and had posted a few times here on that subject and all I can suggest is googling Pani Weronika Moser, a (now retired) internet start who apparently made a good if messy living out of her hobby.

After all, swinging, though it upsets weak minded people, isn't illegal is it?

News / Poland -- Europe's only counterweight to Russia [271]

There may be a cult of personality, but people don't all buy it.

Enough do to give him an, albeit very very compromised, electoral legitimacy. Sadly the Russians are like that.

You won't like it but... in my opinion, there are much worse regimes in the world than Russia's.

Here in Europe??? No, there aren't "much worse regimes" than Putain's, except perhaps for two vwry minor states: Belarus (President Lukaszenko) and Transdnistria (President Smirnov - see the connection?) both of which are Putin's puppet states, two of many that his vile regime bankrolls...

Russia simply cannot defeat all the NATO allied countries and conversely NATO cannot conquer and subdue all of Russia.

And the Russians know that. And the world sits back while they invade Ukraine...

Putin has balls - he built up the Russian army and up until sanctions

Most people in here in Poland (and elsewhere in Europe) would I think prefer a Russian leader with integrity and decency than with 'balls'. About Putin's balls, the less I know the better. As far as the other two qualities are concerned, he has no integrity and he has no decency

News / Poland -- Europe's only counterweight to Russia [271]

They're not that silly.

But stupid enough to have a massive Cult of Personality for the dictator Putin and certainly stupid enough to do his bidding, as in the illegal invasion of Ukraine.

Unfortunately the worst regimes, like Russia, have no shortage of people willing to die for them in ultimately fruitless wars.

Travel / Old town Krakow, is it dangerous during Night time? [42]

The police had stolen £350 English money out his wallet then when confronted about it denied it.

This isn't as common as it was (it used to be always but now is only sometimes) and is appalling. In Poland it's a very good idea (and certainly one that the locals have) to avoid the police.

It's usually fine in Warsaw; they were read the riot act after some high profile incidents and in my opinion really have improved, however outside Warsaw people should not assume the police are on the side of law and order.

The bouncers with guns or murdering bus drivers are more of a concern

Spot on. Anyway, the only drunken rowdiness that's crossed any sort of a line (being normally cheerful, a bit loud and drinkIng a lot in bars is after all what a lot of bars are there for anyway) I've seen in Kraków (or pretty well anywhere else in Poland) has been from locals.

I remember once sitting in the smoking bit of my favourite bar/restaurant in Gdańsk. There was a large group of young men on the other side of the room. An international group, maybe sailors or here for sports, they were loud-ish but still very well behaved. Any bar would be very happy to have them as customers. There were two older Polish ladies wearing hats and frumpy clothing on the table next to us who spent the whole time moaning and sniping about them saying how terrible those British over there are behaving, British this, British that, rowdy, nude, yadda, yadda, yadda. Just like some of the sillier posters in this thread.

The thing is that only two of them were British.. Most were Polish and Russian and the rest sounded Dutch.

As for badly behaved groups, vomiting, fighting, urinating and falling over drunk; Poles do that very well themselves as anyone who's taken a stroll up Nowy Świat on a Saturday night can see for themselves.

When I am In Krakow I never speak English in the bars, the Brits are turning the place into the Magaluf of the east

I can't say I've ever noticed that in Kraków, however if the Kraków tourist authorities will continue to pay for billboards in the less upmarket bits of England showing young people partying in Kraków and as long as Kraków businesses advertise stag tours (showing exactly the sort of behaviour you and I dislike) in 'lads magazines' they will reap what they sow.

They need to abide by the legal frame regulated by the Parliament

In fact they need to abide by the constitution and defend it against politicians; that is the reason the Constitutional Tribunal exists.

News / The European Health Card. Why don't the Poles know about it? Free Medical care. [26]

Surely they would still ask about your health?

I think there's a kind that you don't need to answer questions about provided you're under a certain age. My ex always used to get it from the nearest travel agent. I'm not sure what they include though.

There's also the kind that the Post Office sell. Quite expensive (even very) if you get it for a whole year, but maybe they do it for shorter periods.

It's maybe worth just risking it. My old man won't travel abroad any more (travel insurance for people approaching 90 with all the health issues that involves is hard to get) but really I wish he'd just come for a visit anyway, and any crises can be sorted out on the European Union Health Card.

More lies from Polonius.....PiS are behind the combined opposition.

Lying and twisting facts are a hallmark of the appalling Kaczynski clique, just as they are for Orban and others of their ilk. The rabid misleading propaganda is a hallmark of the totalitarian regimes that preceded them before 1990 and the totalitarian regimes that they want to impose. And largely the propagandists are the same people..

Hence the Polish pro-democracy rallies and their equivalent in Hungary.

Either way, if PiS don't back down now, we're going to see the situation where the government will find their laws to be unenforceable

All it would take is a serious legal challenge. And it isn't as if they have much of a support base.

News / Crash of Tu-154 at Smolensk-North--could it have been a bomb in the Polish plane? [233]

So he has a platform for his delusions.

One that is of course shrinking rapidly although I do think that as the PIS regime fails he and Kaczynski are likely to become even more extreme and hysterical and the silly conspiracy theories about Smolensk are one of the red herrings they are likely be extreme and nutty about not least tip draw attention from their other failings
