History / Romantic Aristocrat Stories from Poland's Past [16]

but my editor wants mushy lovey-dovey stuff.

OK, some better stuff.

Guests at an engagement party are happy to note that the wedding of Janusz, a wealthy young landowner, to Zofia, the daughter of an even wealthier landowner named Stolnik, will unite two huge estates. Sofia and Janusz celebrate a toast with Stolnik, and Stolnik calls Janusz the son he has always wanted. The party is disturbed by a plaintive wailing from outside. It seems to be a troubled young girl, crying for her lost love. The kind-hearted Zofia asks Janusz to talk to the girl, hoping he will comfort her; he reluctantly agrees.

History / Romantic Aristocrat Stories from Poland's Past [16]

Write about hanging the portraits instead of living people. Some aristocrats, guilty of treason against the state of Poland, were hanged in absentia as they had managed to escape. It happened in 18 century.

I think it is very romantic.

News / Should countries be boycotted for offending Poles? [60]

Why am I against?

If Poles boycott the Dutch merchandise, who will suffer most? The Dutch government?
No, labourers on Dutch farms and greenhouses wii pay for it. They will be laid off, many of them Poles.

Do we really want that?

News / Should countries be boycotted for offending Poles? [60]

A Europe-wide row has broken out over a website launched by the populist Freedom Party. On the site, people are asked to "tell their stories" about trouble caused by East European migrants to the Netherlands. The European Union has branded the site "an open call for intolerance". Ten ambassadors from East European countries have sent a letter of protest to the Dutch parliament. The government declines to comment, but the anger is growing.

There are calls for boycott of Dutch goods such as:

kocioo: Lista holenderskich produktów które należy bojkotować....
Dutch Lady - Milk/Diary Products
Ferrero Roche - Chocolate
Wall's - Ice Cream
ING -Insurance
Planta -Margerine
Lady's Choice -Margerine
Lipton -Tea
Shell -Petrol
Knorr -Food Additives
Dove -Bathiing
Sunlight -Magerine/Dishwasher Liquid
Radiant -Deodorant
Rexona -Deodorant
Ponds -Beauty Product
Kieldsens -Chocolate
Slimfast -Slimming Product
Lego -Raisin
Philips -Electrical Products
Duyvis -Junk Food
Gouda -Cheese

Personally, I am against the boycott. There are decent Dutch too.

Romanian member of the European Parliament (MEP), Sebastian Bodu, and Polish MEP Jacek Saryusz-Wolski are asking citizens in the 12 states which joined the European Union after 2004 to boycott any Dutch products, in protest to The Hague extremism.

In a joint statement, the two MEPs say they felt "profoundly injured and threatened" by the atitude of the Dutch party PVV.
Their request comes after the extreme right-wing party PVV, led by Geert Wilders, launched a website where the Dutch can state their discontent with Eastern European workers: "Do you have problems with people in Central and Eastern Europe? Did you lose your job because of a Polish, Bulgarian, Romanian or other Eastern European citizen? We want to know!" the website says.

Travel / Driving in Poland, are there any rules at all? [149]

I have actually seen either a road or a car, but have not driven one myself here yet. therefore I am asking you for help. No need to be sarcastic.

I am not sarcastic. I only wonder how funny it is that you don`t believe what you see with your own eyes and depend on others to tell you what sth is like. Really amusing! :):):):)

I advise you not to drive in Poland with your poor sight, it will be much safer for you and other drivers.

If you insist, though, stay away from me on the road. :):):):):):)

History / What do Poles owe to Russians? [193]

I have a question. How do you assess Krylov's Polish (third video from the bottom) where he's singing on a 1-10 scale? :)

3.5 for the accent. It`s heaviness makes some Polish words sound too Russian. But 10 for the arrangement and voice and general atmosphere! :):):):)

The Russian governor of Warsaw under partitions in 19 century is still remembered today.
Sokrates Starynkiewicz (1820-1902; Russian: Сократ Иванович Старинкевич) was a Russian general and the 19th President of Warsaw between 1875 and 1892. During his presidency he ordered the construction of municipal water works as well as the tramway and telephone network in Warsaw.

On November 18, 1875, he was appointed the 19th president of Warsaw. Although at first he was considered yet another Russian official assigned to govern a Polish city, he soon became known as a great organiser and engineer. He was also a good economist and during his presidency the city's treasury more than tripled. He became particularly popular with the Varsavians after he started to consult most of his decisions with the press, a thing that was uncommon in 19th century Russia.

Starynkiewicz also introduced modern gas street lighting, built a modern marketplace (Hala Mirowska) and started construction and paving of streets in the city centre. Finally, he ordered two censuses (in 1882 and 1892).

Life / Is Poland a poor country? [578]

Most Poles, when they buy a new car or mobile phone or whatever, they use those items for a few years, instead of exchanging for newer better models every year or so.

OK, you convinced me. I am not going to do that. Thanks for taking care of the environment.

I can buy at least 3 brand new cars at any given moment and I am driving 25 y/o Jaguar and my next car will be also "historic".I am too cheap.

I used to drive my old FIAT car until it was 27 years old.

Do you think that average Joe in the US can buy a new car every year?(I am talking cash not payments)

Isn`t it so? :):):) Don`t US manufacturers pay you for buying their car?

Is Poland a poor country?

Yes, we are. Most Poles, when they buy a new car or mobile phone or whatever, they use those items for a few years, instead of exchanging for newer better models every year or so. I have been driving my mini van for 5 years now and am not going to replace it with anything new. I am too poor. I used my reliable Nokia phone for 6 years before exchanging it for another model.

Poland is increasing rapidly

Yes. That is why I hope in 10 or 15 years I will be able to buy a new car every year.

Study / Secondary education in Poland [20]

Apprenticeships seem to be unheard of in Poland - the usual pattern now is that people get forced into high schools, they fail their Matura, then they go to some post-school place where they have to "study' for 2-3-4 years to get a paper of "something" which qualifies them to work as "something.
Insane system - and the employers are to blame for demanding papers for everything.

If you want to finish education at 18 and start working, you should choose vocational school at the age of 16 and undergo two years of such schooling with apprenticeship included.

The system is not insane - people who fail their matura exams and look for post school courses to get their papers, are useless good for nothings and no wonder employers don`t want them.

Would a graduate from a private school have better employment chances in the open market. Would the private schools be seen as better in some way?

If a private school has been high in rankings, then the answer should be yes.

However, graduates of elite high schools, whether private or state, don`t usually look for jobs right after school. They go to university first. And it is uni education that really counts.

But they can exploit their high school`s good opinion later on. In all interviews I have given so far I always mention graduating from one of the best high schools in Krakow. :):):):)

Po polsku / ACTA, anti-ACTA - kto ma rację? [5]

którzy w czterech literach mają prawa autorskie, bo wola ściągać darmową muzyczkę i pronole.

Study / Shocking! Test standards in Polish schools. [165]

I respectfully disagree - if i run around Wroclaw and say things like "byc holender, zyc Wroclaw", one could argue that I can communicate. But that's not really the point, is it? I am not asking for perfection (everybody makes some mistakes), but a little proficiency kind of adds to people's understanding of what one is trying to convey.

Let me cheer you up. The requirements of high school English final exam are still much higher. Those 16 year olds who scored 7 or 9 points for that writing task in junior high school won`t pass the matura exam unless they get down to hard work. :):):):):):)

Or I may be wrong as we are still unaware of what the new written final exam of 2015 might be like.

Study / Shocking! Test standards in Polish schools. [165]

I'm sorry ... that's not what it is about.

Yes, it is. Those kids, despite making appaling errors, are still able to communicate successfully. And that is what is expected of students at the age of 16 - communication, not perfection.

Life / Why is Prostitution still legal in Poland? [106]

The change in the law in 2010 still means that prostitution (i.e. sex for money) is illegal. The only difference is that the person who pays is the criminal, not the person who is paid. Personally I approve of the new law.

The only legal prostitution is in marriage.

Work / Salary and cost of living information - Krakow [257]

So do you think that 9000 PLN minus 2500 PLN probably for rental will be fine?

It is enough for a 3-person family to live a good life.

But if you are planning to put aside half your salary every month, then you will have to scrimp and save.

Life / Are there many crypto-Jews in Poland? [67]

Crypto-jews are jews who try to make everyone believe they are polish while they are jews in secret. Thus they can easily infiltrate key positions.

Yes, of course.

And other example of crypto-jews in Poland is quite often found among professors in polish universities.

Not only there. For example, most forum members are. Their idea is to stop any development in PF for the better. Those members often show despotism and corruption, they have an '' I know everything'' attitude and the slighlest critisism by another participant towards them, (even if he is a clever one) will make the participant to fail the discourse, eventhough if the participant is right.

Po polsku / Magicznych Świąt!? [5]

Ale my byliśmy pierwsi i ładniejsi - do dekoracji wielbłądów wzięli wawelskie arrasy i zdobyczne tkaniny tureckie spod Wiednia!

Po polsku / Magicznych Świąt!? [5]

Przetrwała tradycyjna wigilia z opłatkiem, kolędami i pasterką,

No i git.

Ja Ci go wtedy ozdobię zdjęciami..... :):):):)

Pałac Zimowy, do cholery?

Jak by sie Pawiany postarali w liczeniu, to tez by im wyszlo 12.

Dlaczego?

Bo dochodzenie do 12 oznacza jakąś orgię w stylu Wielkie Żarcie, natomiast według mnie wigilia powinna być skromna.
