History / Do any Poles miss the Communist era? [35]

Yes but capitalism was a roll of the dice that few would even have entertained had they had the chance. Now we can see a change towards avid materialism but as you said, entrenched attitudes take a long, long time to phase out.

Noimmigration was. I won't fill his boots.

Most people here do balk at the mention of communism, right enough. Then again, they did the same to Thatcher in Britain but still she remained popular for so long.

My mother-in-law misses communism. She often talks of the certainty that existed then. Quite a few older Poles probably did ok under it.

News / MORE ANTI-POLISH SENTIMENT IN GERMANY [280]

Crow, blackadder is right insofar as you have to let go of some old daggers or you'll never move forward. Poles and Germans must learn to do the same. Take people as you find them and try not to look at nationality so much. For example, there are some Poles that get on my nerves but many are really nice people and I'm happy to walk among them. Nationality gazing is counterproductive through the chosen lens :)

News / MORE ANTI-POLISH SENTIMENT IN GERMANY [280]

Right enough as we posted at the same time. Sorry!

Asides from the recent fracas on Nov 11, I've heard of no friction though I'm sure JK will be sure to invent some being the sad little man that he is.

News / MORE ANTI-POLISH SENTIMENT IN GERMANY [280]

Wrocław, I did. The 'recent influx of foreigners' was in reference to Poles against the backdrop of the general rise in Islamic elements in Germany. I had Merkel's view of 'multi-culti' in mind. Sascha will clarify this but I think Germans view this issue more generally whereas quite a few Brits have singled out Poles. I wanted to draw that demarcation. Without that background, Wrocław, the discussion falls flat on its face.

What we should be encouraging here is individual stories of posters with first-hand exp of this (the thread topic). Otherwise, it's just imagination and prejudice at work, right?

Sascha, do you feel allegiance to the German state in any way? You seem to be caught in the middle of this clash. It's natural that Germans are up in arms about the recent influx of foreigners. However, they must ask themselves the question of how they want their country to be in the face of a rising Islamic influence. I'm not saying it's a bad thing per se, just that it's an emerging reality.

Work / Information about Wroclaw (on finding a job as a chef and average salary) [6]

That's not necessarily true, angel eyes. I know a Scottish chef who works in a smaller city than Wrocław and he somehow communicates with his Polish co-workers without knowing Polish that well. As for native speakers, even CELTA-qualified folk can be found everywhere.

News / Priests are paid by the Gov't in Poland. [86]

Aha, so priests in Poland have nothing to do with the Vatican? That's news to me, I-S.

Would Jesus have wanted the RCC to be a for-profit organisation? If you really want to know more about them and their links to Poland, may I recommend the radio broadcasts of Greg Szymanski!? I-S, can't you see the priest as a strategic asset for elite bankers?

News / Priests are paid by the Gov't in Poland. [86]

I-S, there are ways and means of getting hold of such figures but my point is that there is almost always an undisclosed sum. The RCC didn't get rich purely from donations from your regular church-goer. How did their coffers get so deep?

Well you can't be drinking hard then. Come on, pawian, that sentence didn't make sense ;)

Priests should be paid by the govt as the govt controls public funds and the majority of the Polish public see the merit in having priests.
