Life / Are Polish people open to others? [20]

Some older people like to talk about their war experiences and talk a lot about it to get it out of their systems, others refuse to mention it because it was so traumatic and keep quiet.

It all depends on the person. But in general once they know you, they will treat you as your friend and I would say they are open.

News / What's the stupidest question asked about Poland? [414]

Some people in Poland are afraid to come to the US and ask if there are shootings on the streets all the time.
They see America through TV and that's the impression they get.

Travel / Coming to Poland with a pet :) [47]

Dobbies are smart dogs, but can be aggressive, they need to be properly brought up and they need the right person. They are not for everybody. I've worked at a dog kennel as a groomer and boarder and there was this one doberman who was really mean and was up for adoption. But this guy came and the dog instantly liked him.

I think he hated women for some reason...

Travel / Coming to Poland with a pet :) [47]

Poland is a member of the EU Pet Travel Scheme, which means that pet carnivores like dogs, cats, and ferrets, can enter Poland without quarantine, as long as they meet the hygiene requirements

For more information about the Pet Scheme (PETS), go to:

defra.gov.uk/animalh/quarantine/factsheet/petseurope.pdf

For more information about taking your pet abroad, which includes contact information about obtaining a permit for Poland, go to:

transitionsabroad.com/publications/magazine/9907/taking_you r_pet_abroad.shtml

As laws and regulations may change in regards to this issue, I'd also recommend that you contact your nearest Polish consulate and also the airline that you are traveling with.

There are a lot of G. Shepherds in Poland. I'm planning on getting a long-coat from Poland. They are very expensive and not as popular in the US, but I just love them.

Ok Chuck. What kind of dogs do you have? I added to the previous response. They have to microchipped.

Not to Poland. Only to England or Australia and other island countries where rabies are not found. You just need to buy them a ticket for the plane (around $100, depending on airline) they need an air-line approved kennel then they sit in a special compartment on the plane.

I know, because I've transported dogs from Poland and England.

Poland
VETERINARY CERTIFICATE & INSTRUCTIONS
Poland requires that your pet be microchipped and vaccinated for rabies at least 30 days prior to travel.

Your veterinarian must then complete the proper EU veterinary certificate and attach the rabies certificate.

Traveling By Air
Try to avoid peak travel periods when delays and stopovers are longer. Traveling in extreme hot or cold weather may be dangerous if your dog must wait very long before loading and unloading. Plan a trip with as few stops and transfers as possible.

Make hotel, resort and airline reservations for your dog well in advance. Some airlines have limited space for transporting pets.

Some airlines allow small dogs to travel with their owner (generally for an additional charge) if the carrier fits under the passenger seat. Otherwise, rent or purchase a carrier or crate which meets airline regulations and affix a LIVE ANIMAL sticker. Mark it with your name and address and the name of a person who can be contacted about your dog at your destination if necessary.

They need to have all their shots up to date - distemper, parvo, rabies. They don't need to be quarantined. They will just be checked at the airport if you have all the papers and that's it. They will be flying in the luggage compartment.

Unless it's a small dog like chihuahua, it can fly with you.

Life / Child Adoption in Poland? [138]

I will e-mail you kasia, but the first thing you need to do is contact a local adoption agency, each city has a different one, Catholic Charity is one of them, or a licensed child welfare agency where you have to schedule a home study. Tell them about your plans of adopting abroad.

Once the home study is completed it should be sent to the Department of Health and Social Services. I don't know what State you're in, but each state has different laws. Immigration law requires that both spouses see the child prior to or during the adoption preceedings.

During a visa application process, the INS does an extensive investigation of your background. They will need proof of citizenship, marital status, home study, a statement of financial status and a fingerprint check.

All the documents will have to be translated into english by a certified translater.
The process is long, but it is easier to adopt siblings. Also being of Polish origins helps in the process also.

Life / Poland's Environment, recycling [79]

Yeah, Poland is just getting used to recycling.
This Polish family I know, who lives in the US (ILLEGALY!) does not follow the rules of recycling. Here everyone recycles, but they try to hide cans, bottles, etc, in the garbage so no one will see. It takes a while for the mind to get used to new things.

Life / Child Adoption in Poland? [138]

as far as I know I still have dual citizenship

you do.
You do if you still have your Polish passport, but since you left Poland as a minor you have to re-submit paperwork to obtain a Polish ID or passport. You are registered in Poland but you haven't lived there, so you are not registered (zameldowana) as living there.

Love / 6 months with my Polish girlfriend and I still don't understand her.. [208]

sparky, if you guys don't understand each other, you are not on the same level and your relationship might never work out. There might be a communication problem or you and her are just not meant for each other. You don't 'click' together.

In the future, if you go on the way you are now, not understanding each other, you get married, things won't get any better! And a divorce will be the solution, then she will blame you and you her for ruining each other's life!!!

You have to communicate, understand what she wants if you truly love each other. Don't keep a barrier of misunderstandings between you.
And if you still cannot understand what she wants, or don't like it, then find someone else, because life is too short to waste on trying to figure out what she wants if she doesn't tell you.

USA, Canada / Where to get prune pierogies in NJ? [8]

Here's a list of 21 Polish stores in New Jersey newpoland.com/polish_community_deli.htm. Maybe one of them will have prune pierogi, they have the other kind, which of course, you can always dissect and re-stuff with prunes.

USA, Canada / Where to get prune pierogies in NJ? [8]

I don't think they are as popular as the other kinds. But here's what you can do:
A. Make them yourself
B. Buy the other kind, take a spoon, get rid of the stuff inside, put prunes inside and tape them back up.

Glad I could help.

Language / How to say Merry Christmas in Polish? [66]

"A big star in your chimney, presents up to your neck, a christmas tree two meters tall, three crates of candy, snowman in front of your window, and New Year's Eve till dawn, wishes you Krzysiek"

Doesn't make much sense in english, but in Polish it rhymes making it sound really cool.
