Law / Poland three year residency [30]

At the moment you may apply only for a temporary residence card in Poland. It is given for a period of max. three years (and it depends on what basis this permit has been issued).

This card makes the stay in Poland legal and entitles to re-crossing Polish border without a visa. If you want to work in Poland you must apply for the temp. residence and work permit.

Genealogy / Information required on Czaikowski family/Danzig? [5]

Czaikowski

Probably the name derived from Czajkowski. There's only three people with Czaikowski name currently registered in Poland (interestingly one of them is in Pruszcz Gdański - 10km south from Gdańsk), and up to ten thousand Czajkowski's here.

Check the map: moikrewni.pl/mapa/kompletny/czaikowski.html

Danzig

Danzig is of course Gdańsk now.

Prangenau

Pręgowo Żuławskie now in Poland.

Langfuhr

is now one of Gdańsk boroughs - Wrzeszcz.

Life / Did you already bless your Święconka? [31]

The only name which comes to my mind regarding this is święconka. Different foods are taken to the church in the basket to be blessed on Holy Saturday. And then this food is consumed at homes - prepared hot and served with horseradish and mustard.

Real Estate / Accommodation Medium term [1 month] in Poland for 2000zl. Paying gas, electricity, water? [2]

What is the best kind of accommodation to fit two adults for a month, I'd be willing to pay up to 2,000Z£ just for the accommodation.

For that price you can expect to rent 2 or 3 rooms in quite comfortable flat, well equipped, with internet and tv - near/or in the center of a medium sized city, maybe in not much popular area like at the see or in the mountains, but for example in the town like Malbork. Of course more "holiday" places are also available with this price, but them may be smaller, and not in great location.

Renting in Poland implies that you will pay the fixed rent rate plus electricity and gas mostly.

Language / Pronunciation of English abbreviations in Poland [12]

Hi-Fi is pronounced English way in Poland (haj-faj)

More often presently - yes I agree, but still I hear mostly "haj-fi" (Eng. hi-fee) - especially among older generation.

Language / Pronunciation of English abbreviations in Poland [12]

I don't know if exist any special rule how to pronounce foreign abbreviations in Poland. I doubt it. It's all pretty messed up. Some are English pronounced (eg. FBI), some Polish (NATO), and even some are mixed - Polish-English pronunciation (Hi-Fi). So if you are an English speaker you can pronounce English abbreviations in the 'native' way, the more so when these acronyms (DSEAR & COSHH) are not commonly known in Poland.

Food / Where to buy cheap nuts and seeds (for muesli) in Warsaw? [2]

The nuts and seeds are expensive everywhere in Poland. I think the best price one can get when buying online and in greater amounts. If online buy is out of the option, try local bazaars and flea markets.

History / Can anyone recommend any good books/reading material on the Polish Urkas? [2]

According to the Polish wiki page about Urka, the Urkas group has been described by Gustaw Herling Grudzinski in the novel "A World Apart":

A World Apart: The Journal of a Gulag Survivor (Polish: Inny świat: zapiski sowieckie)[1] is a memoir written by Gustaw Herling-Grudziński, combining various literary genres: novel, essay, psychological portrait, as well as sociological and political dissertation. It was first published in 1951 in London in the English translation by Andrzej Ciołkosz.[2] In the Polish language, the book was first published in London in 1953, then in Poland by the underground press in 1980, and officially in 1988.

Life / Plumbers' supplies or similar & plumber in Wrocław [2]

LM, Obi & similar do not stock the screw, only the entire part.

Leroy Merlin at Karkonoska 85 should have it (the whole part - it's cheap and it will fit most of the sinks). Another shop for these kind of stuff is Castorama, but it's a little further away from the area you've mentioned.

There's no need for hiring a plumber.

Law / Is work visa in Poland issued for the period corresponding to validity of a work permit? [5]

As far I know, the period for which a visa is issued is strictly dependent on the reason of issue. The employer shall issue a declaration of intention to work for a for a specific period of time, and this period is a measure of how long a work visa is valid. For example if it's issued for 5 months, the validity period of work visa will be also 5 months.

Individual Country Visa (D) A "D" visa allows a foreigner to enter a single country and stay within its borders for up to one year. The validity of such a visa depends on the purpose of travel.

Real Estate / Advice Needed Second-hand Apartment Prices Warsaw (Praga) - Asking Price v Sale Price [6]

As far I can see, the price 7.500 per square meter in pre-war building in Warsaw is not exceptional high. I would say the price is average. Really huge prices are on Warsaw Starowka - even more than 20 thousend per sq. meter. Every pre-war building in a decent condition do not come cheap - ultimately just a few old houses in Warsaw survived the war.

Check this part of the article about the housing in Warsaw's buildings:

Prices? The discrepancies are huge. - In the last year, the lowest rate we recorded in the case of the post-war building at Grochowska Street, where the price per sq m. in a 58-meter flat was 5450 zł. Equally attractive price we saw in the case of an apartment in a prewar building at Siewierska in the Ochota district - 6 thousand. zł per sq. m (62 sq. m). We had a few prices less than 7 thousand per sq m. (eg in Praga Północ, Praga Południe, Ochota and Włochy district). And the most expensive were eg. Stara Street (a tenement from 1956 for a little more than 13 thousand zł per sq m.), and Słowackiego (pre-war tenement for 12 thousand zł per sq m.). When it comes to bid prices the highest value reached houses in Old Town (even more than 20 thousand per sq m.), and the apartment buildings - says Marcin Jańczuk from Metrohouse & Partners.

Average? Praga Północ housing prices in pre-war buildings generally fluctuate less than 8 thousand zł per sq m of residential premises (higher prices, up to approx. 10 thousand zł relate to representative locations on Praga Północ - eg. at. Floriańska, Targowa). In the city center, Mokotów, Zoliborz - they can go up to 20 thousand zł per sq m. Starówka - from 20 to 30 thousand, Saska Kepa - to approx. 18 thousand. zł per sq m.

Australia / What were the circumstances that led your Polish ancestors to Australia? [4]

Polish emigration to Australia have always fascinated me. It's so distant country, and the first Poles get there in the 18th century already. The journey lasted 8 months at that time. But the biggest influx of people from Poland to Australia took place just after the WW2 - about 50.000 people and during the period of martial law in Poland, which was in 1981 - about 10.000 Polish emigrants arrived in Australian land.

I am also interested in further stories how Poles got to Australia and managed to live there on a completely foreign land, so distant from their own country.

Love / Brazilian-Polish couple in London - not getting married for permanent visas [4]

It depends only on both of you - how much determined you are, and how much you are going to sacrifice to be together. It's not an easy decision but it should be done rather sooner than later, because a 'remote' relationship is rarely successful. You already know what are your options. Unfortunately as you have noticed you both in Brazil equals slim chance for a good financial stability. So either Poland (if he really has a good job here) or UK (or Canada?) - it seems that your man is ready for new challenges, so why not to try? Maybe give him a free hand, if he feels than he can make it even in Canada.. but of course he should be familiar with all the difficulties he may experience to get a job in new country, find a place to live, etc.

Good luck!

Work / Polish Australian, civil/hydraulic engineer, experience with programming in C++, is looking for work in Warsaw [2]

In my opinion you should focus rather on your programming skills, since it's one of the most demanding ability by Polish employers, and the IT sector is still growing. Make a good CV, get some references, and try to reach potential employers. You may also advertise yourself in a Polish job sites, check this thread:

Law / I took my car to Poland. Should I pay "recycling fee" again? Changing car registration. [7]

Can you sent some reference to this statement you did, like an article or some record that this law will be introduced or already is?

There are several articles on Polish websites, check the google search for this:

Opłata recyklingowa zostanie zniesiona

The government wants to abolish the recycling fee paid when importing a car from abroad. It is currently 500 zł. To the Parliament went a draft law on this matter.

The proposed change results from a decision of the European Commission - explains Jakub Faryś the President of Polish Association of the Automotive Industry. - This change is due to the opinion of the European Commission, which argues that the introduction of the recycling fee is illegal. Simple consequence is abolishing the fee by the Polish government - explains the interlocutor.

(...)

The amendments will enter into force on 1 July 2015., with the exception of certain provisions for certain obligations of enterprises which have come into force from the beginning of 2016. But first it must be adopted by the parliament and signed by the President.

Genealogy / Does anyone know any history about a Polish royal eagle ring? [2]

I'm sure there are more such stories. This old jewelery was very beautiful and often had great value. Mostly these were various family heirlooms, passed down from generation to generation. Sometimes people had to put all eggs into one basket, selling all their valuables to start life over again, and unfortunately in most cases the price they received, covered only a tiny percentage of the total value of an item.

Law / Divorce in Poland - fault - rights to property predating the marriage [34]

Now I'm sure the lawyer will tell you exactly the same. According to the Polish Family and Guardianship Code (Art. 31, § 1)

Przedmioty majątkowe nieobjęte wspólnością ustawową należą do majątku osobistego każdego z małżonków.

Now my translation (sorry for the language)

At the time of marriage, under the Act, comes into force among spouses the community property (joint ownership of property) covering items of property acquired during the marriage, by both spouses or by one of them (marital property). The items of property not covered by the joint ownership of property belong to the personal property of each spouse.

and (Art. 33, p.1):

Do majątku osobistego każdego z małżonków należą:

1) przedmioty majątkowe nabyte przed powstaniem wspólności ustawowej

The personal property of both spouses include:

1) The items of property acquired before the formation of statutory system of matrimonial property rights
