News / UAE's Emaar to Invest in Poland [26]

Emaar from UAE (the developer that built among other things the world's tallest building) is planning to make the biggest real estate investment ever made (worldwide) in Poland according to this article.

Food / Monosodium Glutamate (MSG) and its use in Poland [30]

I have not read anything about obesity in Poland, but I speak based on what I see outside on the street. More overweight people and definitely more overweight kids too. Possibly more men than women suffering from obesity as jon357 said, especially in bigger cities where women are more likely to diet in order to remain slim.

Food / Monosodium Glutamate (MSG) and its use in Poland [30]

Yes entirely free from all artificial colors, flavors and preservatives. Otherwise I don't buy. I admit I often have to put in some extra effort to find what I am looking for, but it is worth it.

Food / Monosodium Glutamate (MSG) and its use in Poland [30]

DominicB I didn't say anything about domestic use of MSG. I was talking about commercial food industry - and industry uses it primarily to reduce cost, and to make a more "appealing" product at a lower cost. But I agree with you in that I have seen extensive use of it in homes as well.

By the way, Maggi is loaded with MSG.

To answer Polonius3, yes it is possible, and I exclusively buy products free from MSG and have a 100% MSG free kitchen.

Food / Monosodium Glutamate (MSG) and its use in Poland [30]

Monosodium Glutamate, in short MSG, or E621, in Polish glutaminian sodu, as a chemical that is often added to foods as a "flavor enhancer". What it actually does is increase the sensitivity to taste, especially saltiness.

In Poland, E621 is nearly always added to the following foods:
1. Ham, sandwich meat (Wędliny).
2. Sausage products (Kiełbasa).
3. Ready soup mixes and soup seasoning, both in dry form and liquid form.
4. Flavored chips (crisps per European English). Virtually anything other than plain salted has added E621.
5. Seasoning mixes, especially for meat.
Plus many other food products.

Some research supports that E621 has negative health effects. In particular increased blood pressure (hypertension) and irregular heart rhythm (Arrhythmia). Some individuals are more sensitive than others, reporting immediate reactions, while others feel no reaction at all.

The Polish food industry has defended the use of E621 (among other chemicals) claiming it was necessary to obtain an "authentic" or "classic" Polish flavor. I find this laughable since E621 came to Poland mainly after the fall of communism so nothing about it is authentic nor classic.

Some Polish companies however have chosen to buck the trend and go without artificial flavor enhancers like E621 - and I for one am a big fan of their products.

There is an actual commercial reason why the industry likes to use E621. It reduces the cost of the product. When MSG is added, it allows them to use less of every other seasoning ingredient.

I invite you to share your experience and feedback on this subject.

News / Does democratic Poland guarantee it's LGBT citizens respect for human and civil rights? [1169]

Gosc123456 I wish you would become a member :) your writing is too valuable to stay a random guest.

I look forward to the day Poland moves forward and joins the rest of the civilized world in offering all citizens equal rights. We still have a long way to go on women's equality, LGBT equality, tax equality (churches make shiploads of cash and pay no tax)... But we are moving forward little by little, even if there are small setbacks here and there.

I would rather my kids see naked people than see people having their heads chopped off, like what happened in Szczecin where very recently a priest made a group of kid watch...

Find for me any text in your "Bible" that gives you the right to treat people differently based on their sexual orientation.

The war on Christianity exists only in your head and paranoid few like you. I recommend therapy but of course you won't do that because science to you is the work of the devil. Luckily the numbers of your likes are dwindling :)

All sorts of people protest naked for all sorts of causes in all sorts of places, it is not unique to gay activists and it is not a big deal. They are not hurting anyone.

If it offend you then don't watch. You can even contact your representative and tell him/her how you feel about it if you live in a democratic country.

On the other hand homophobic (as well as xenophonic, the two tend to come as a package together with the absence of motivation to do anything useful with one's life) activists almost always resort to physical violence. Even in Poland ultra-nationalist protests end in violence virtually all the time. They just have this urge to burn the rainbow like this rainbow is a pickle up their backsides and the sole reason why they are collectively such failures.

Not true johnny reb. The Poland you are talking about is definitely not the Poland I live in today. If there are 5-6 isolated incidents per year and that isn't enough to draw a conclusion like your have.

In Poland, the person at the highest risk of being physically assaulted in general is someone carrying the wrong football club slogan at the wrong time and in the wrong place, regardless of that person's sexual orientation.

News / PO government forcing Polish companies abroad [13]

Wulkan, yes, fluent but not native. And my native language is: not Polish.

I agree that neither party did anything to make Poland more business friendly - not that I am aware of anyway.

jon357, I heard stories, but I only started my business here in 2012 so all I know is based on word of mouth.

No they don't or maybe the foreign ones who have bad command of Polish language but compensate with more cash in hand, they couldn't afford running their business in their own country so they have no comparison.

And you know all of them? Here is one example that doesn't fit your very specific stereotype. Me. I speak Polish and I am nervous about PiS being in charge. With the exception of one of the people that I do business with in Poland, nobody is comfortable about PiS being in charge, and every one of them is Polish. The single exception is a friend of a key figure in PiS.

Real Estate / Poland: Swiss Franc loans come back to bite [37]

Wroclaw Boy;

You are right about something, people didn't know. Whose fault is that? (genuine question) The people who thought they were being smart or the brokers that took advantage of people's stupidity? Or maybe the administration that allowed it all to happen?

I agree that mortgage advisors tricked people into these arrangements. One of my family members was a mortgage broker and sold dozens of CHF loans and even took one for his own home. He is now feeling the error of his old ways.

Regardless of all the above, in the eyes of the law, the person who signed the contract taking the risk is responsible. Unless you can prove that there was a specific conspiracy to set people up and crash the exchange rate a few years later (I can't see how that would benefit anyone).

Finally, a car and a bank loan are very different types of products. I will get back to you with more soon, and I appreciate all you have said.
