Travel / Driving in Poland, are there any rules at all? [149]

dlaczego?i often drive with a hat on because its cold in my car before heater kicks in!

Me too, but I know that you know what I mean! Especially those old guys in pristine garaged £adas and Polonezes

Don't stop the car before zebra crossing suddenly. 99% pedestrians are used to wait

Be very careful when approaching crossings when the road is icy. Pedestrians who don't drive are unaware of stopping distances, and they often think that you are slowing down to let them cross.

Travel / Driving in Poland, are there any rules at all? [149]

Hi Patrick. I guess you are an American journalist who got his licence in the UK.
Don't worry about driving in Poland. Just take it easy and beware of anyone driving while wearing a hat. This may seem strange advice, but bear it in mind and it may save your life.

Law / Buying a car in Poland for export [48]

1,100zl (i.e. a thousand in cash) for a 1990 with LPG conversion

I've got one in the yard, and if the OP wants it in a couple of months, he can take it away with my compliments.

Law / Buying a car in Poland for export [48]

These Finnish guys want to have an adventure

My first car in Poland was a £ada Samara (Sputnik, actually) and it was certainly an adventure. I spent most of my time, not to mention money, at the mechanic's. You name it, it went wrong. The only good thing I can say about it is that it always started, +/- 30 C.

Love / More loveless sex of Poles living in the regained lands [73]

And Poland is constantly referred to as a staunchly Catholic country innit?.

By you, perhaps. The reality is somewhat different. If Poles were as staunchly Catholic, i.e. obedient, as you assert, there would be half a dozen kids at least in most families.

Life / Supermarket culture rules in Poland? [18]

Is it like that where you live in Poland?

No. I'm now enjoying a chilli-con-carne made with excellent beef from my local butcher. Their busiest days are on Tuesdays and Fridays, when they have fresh meat from their own farm. Their sausages are also great. Occasionally there's mutton. I avoid pork except for the occasional pig-out breakfast rasher.

The best baker's in town opens at 0530 and closes at 2100. It sells a wide range of excellent breads.
As for vegetables, what doesn't come out of the family's ground (I don't think my ma-in-law has ever bought a potato) can be bought from the old ones in the market. For now, of course, the supermarket supplies most of our needs.

Food / Anybody in Poland actually eats soup-mix soups? [27]

Good grief. What's so terrible about having a packet soup when you're too busy to leave work for lunch. It's better than not having anything, and also better than phoning for a pizza. People don't live on this stuff; it's just a standby for most.

Work / British working in China and moving to work in Poland. Income tax exemption? [3]

There is a Sino-Polish agreement on the avoidance of double income tax, but I can't think why there should be a two-year exemption from tax for individuals. If I were you, I'd ask the company to send you a link to the Polish government website where this is stated in black and white.

History / Lech Kaczynski - was he a good leader? [88]

Agree with all of that.

Maybe it would be better to listen to a Polish point of view,

That too, but I suspect we'll hear much more from people with Polish ancestors.

Work / I Want to offer a Telesales Job to 5 Brit Expats however... [19]

the easiest way is to keep them on the phone for hours. No sales = not on target = they get fired. They'll soon learn.

I haven't got the heart! Poor sods are only trying to make a living, but they can be so annoying. Part of their training should be to accept "Thank you, I'm not interested" as the end of the conversation. Anyway, I would never buy anything from anybody who hides their number when they call, as they invariably do. What else are they hiding?

Love / Polish Wedding Blessing [16]

I persuaded my Best Man to wear his kilt, which went down really well, with people demanding photo's with him, but my sister-in-law (well alight) couldn't resist manually checking whether he was wearing underwear while he had his back turned. He nearly hit the ceiling.

150+ people

At, what 100PLN/head these days? Not surprised.

Love / Polish Wedding Blessing [16]

Maybe it's just me, but I don't see the humour in having to give people vodka. It sounds dreadful...

They get away lightly considering how much vodka they have to give away a bit later in the day. It's just a tradition which is part of the day. There's no intimidation involved.

Love / Polish Wedding Blessing [16]

Where I live they are more likely to be stopped by young guys who demand vodka before letting them pass. It's known as a gate. It's all done with great good humour and the wedding party usually has the bottle or its money equivalent ready.

Love / Living with a Polish man, but he has a drinking problem? [60]

I can’t have a relationship with some one who’s culture accepts this kind of behaviour as normal

It's not normal Polish behaviour, which makes him a liar as well as a useless bum. Walk away from this one Anita. He won't change.

Travel / Any Halal Restaurants in Krakow? [34]

There is a tiny, mostly immigrant Muslim community in Krakow. The city lacks a mosque so its Muslims gather for Friday prayer in the building of the Studium Jezyka Polskiego of the Politechnika Krakowska University of Technology, 1 Skarzynskiego street, from noon to 2 p.m.

Found this on the web. If you go there, you may well be invited home for a meal. Sounds good to me. Might try it myself.

News / Icy blast cleans the streets of the homeless in Poland.. [63]

the majority of deaths related to the elements comes from drunks passing out oblivious to conditions.

That sounds naive. Do you think a homeless alcoholic, in temperatures of minus 20C thinks about alcohol? They do not. They shiver and suffer until they find somewhere to sleep, or they die. The instinct for life-preservation overrides the craving for booze in these conditions.

happily trampling over the poor

Wasn't it Kenneth Clark, the UK Thatcherite ex-minister who referred to the homeless as "Oh, yes, those people one steps over when one leaves the opera"?

Is this a tragedy, or nature's way of removing life's failures from the world?

As you know, of course not.

The guy on the street could be a very bright guy, but certain things happened to him. It could happen to any of us

Ain't that the fkucin truth?

It is basically natural selection... as cruel as it sounds, it's simply true...

What you know about natural selection could be written on the back of a postage stamp that already has the Encyclopaedia Britanica on it.
