Life / Learning Driving In Poland - rules? [55]

but at a small junction (ie narrow, short distances between the cars opposite each other) it seems easy to mistakenly enter the junction and smack into the car opposite

so, let's sum up
1. If you are going to turn left and opposite car is going to turn (his) left, opposite car should wait and left the crossroad as (third) last.

2. If you are going to turn left and opposite car is going to turn (his) right, you should give him a way (and save his driver-side door ;)

Life / Learning Driving In Poland - rules? [55]

The thing that puzzles me is I keep hearing how difficult the Polish driving test is, but then how do all these people pass and then drive like lunatics?

I passed driving test 25 years ago and believe me or not it was easy as pie ;)

He had one or two fingers on the wheel at most.

Sometimes I use knees only. You know, the boss is calling and asking about paperwork ;)

Opposite me was a car signalling to turn left.

If you two want turn left at the same time your trajectories don't cross. You see indicators each other when approaching.

To my left was a car wanting to go straight.

He should give you way and wait. If guy in opposite car is quick enough he can take advantage and turn left without giving him a way.

where there's a crossroads with white lines at each of the 4 roads meeting, who has right of way? I turned left tonight into a street and although nothing happened, I've a feeling I should've waited for the car opposite to go first

any drawing or pict?

Law / Complete car nut and bolt refurb (OC/AC) - registration in Poland [4]

The problem is as the insurance will expire and the car is stripped can i deregister the car to avoid renewing the insurance as I think its wrong to have to insure a car that is off the road in a secure alarmed garage guarded by dogs and in a million pieces

Million pieces of the car can slip off the jack stands and crush a guard dog :)

You still need an oc insurance.

Law / I still haven't got the Personal Income Tax (PIT) return?? Who do I contact? [6]

what should I do? Can I contact Urząd Skarbowy directly?

Yes. You can ask them (better in person) what is going on. They rarely make mistakes but nobody is perfect.

Sometimes they take your excess in advance on commitments but I think they inform you.
I'm not sure what happens when eg you made a mistake in the bank account number.

Life / Phone callers doing surveys asking what equipment you have in Poland [7]

The survey began with the caller asking "Is that the householder at [the correct address]?" then "What radio stations do you listen to and when?" and continued on to "What electronic equipment do you have in your home?"

Everyday i pray for a such call. (but i don't pick up unknown callers :)

Life / How can I change 100 PLN bank notes for smaller currency? [17]

Basically, when I exchange euros for some zlotys, they always give 100 PLN bank notes. When I want to buy something, they always refuse my 100 bank notes

Pay in your lovely 100 PLN bank notes and use your credit card instead. Boycot the Ladyb***. These bastards still don't accept credit cards ;)

Travel / Foreign car in Warsaw - targeted by thieves/vandals? [13]

I'll be heading to Warsaw in the Summer, hopefully work permitting staying for a while, and wondered how secure an English car would be.

Don't worry. First of all you will be considered as Pole on holiday escaped from steaks factory headind to mum for another cargo of pierogi.

Travel / Is it safe to travel to Poland? [194]

Cars suddenly appeared from the right (let's say cars behind the house corner or bushes) were a bit of a shock to me when i first visited UK.

I mumbled to myself look right first ;)

Seriously, why bother having them at all? Just a waste of paint!

I like your horizontal (flat?) signs. znaki poziome but note that we have snow and vertical signs zebra crossing are sufficient and have priority even without painting.

Travel / Is it safe to travel to Poland? [194]

Just don't stop suddenly before zebra crossings and everything will be ok. We know that Germans usually stop and beware of them but everyone can switch off for a moment.

Language / Learning to speak Polish(?) for traveling reasons. Help!? [30]

I wanted to plan a trip to Poland. However, I figured it would only be appropriate to speak Polish if I'm going to Poland.

We do not expect or dream that you will be able to speak Polish.
Luckily for you we can understand American English better than English English ;)

I noticed that my English workmates reacted to "no no" (expression of agreement catched from our conversation in Polish)
like a warning no, don't do it, stop or hold on I tried to avoid using it.

As a foreigner living in Poland I have long wondered why so many gatherings of men in the 'picnic areas' in forests? in my home country there would be guys and girls......but here it is just men always just the men??? never any women??

It is kind of relax, escape from their moaning princesses, moment of relief, just mens thing ;)
