History / If i could write European history i would unite Europe under Polish language [67]

Any language can borrow, including Polish! ;-p

Of course - but it depends what you mean by "borrow"

Zeitgeist and déjà vu for example, both used also in English, are obviously foreign but there are foreign words that have become assimilated over the centuries and their pronunciation has changed etc so that they are now functionally "English" words.

Again, the same in Polish too.

By saying that Polish is more rich and complex than English I meant many different aspects altogether

More complex - yes, definitely won't argue with that one!

And no, definitely not saying which is "better" LOL

But more rich - what do you mean then?

certainly it is a language that is far more rich than e.g. English.

LOL LOL & LOL

You cannot be serious??

English has by far the largest vocabulary for a start. There are loads of words in English for which there are no polish equivalents - or at least not easy to express succinctly.

News / Poland has low murder rate [60]

If I say I cant stand the idea of positive discrimination/affermative action, I get lumped in with the loony right;
if on the other hand I say most crime is situational and not genetic I get lumped in with the loony liberal(tho to me calling them liberal is an oxymoron as this strand seem the most iliberal of all) side.
Ah well,win/win...lose/lose...

LOL - sounds familiar, I can empathise. The dilemma of the 21st century do-gooder!

Anyway, we all know and accept that the US will always have a high murder rate - you are all mad and you all have guns - simple ; )

Ok, but it's also not racist either I suppose to suggest that stats like this are hardly likely to be available or to be trusted in countries like this anyway? : )

How the heck is the USA so much higher up the list than Afganistan?!

Homocide does not = war. Very different statistic.

Poland not having a big mafia

This is a pet hate. Mafia. The only "mafia" is Italian or Italian American.

I think the "Russian mafia" was the first use of this silliness.

Nearly every single country in the developed world has organised crime at some level - that's all it is.

I remember speaking about organised crime in Ireland to a Polish girl and she was incredulous "What? An Irish mafia? LOL"

Eh ... yes ... no country has the monopoly on organised crime.

USA, Canada / Think you're Polish (and live in the USA)? [161]

no, nothing's changed on my end.

Just googled it - fingerprinting applies only to "visitors" so as (I assume) a permanent legal resident, your security risk would be categorised lower?

Although doesn't explain you being fingerprinted now. Maybe just some over zealous tit.

USA, Canada / Think you're Polish (and live in the USA)? [161]

Which brings the whole circle neatly back around again...

Are you a US citizen? : )

If so, maybe that's why you didn't attract as much security before.

USA, Canada / Think you're Polish (and live in the USA)? [161]

Nothing new there. Since 9/11 as far as I know.

It's the reason I have not visited the states since, and won't be doing so again - unless this changes.

Purely on principle by the way - not that I have "a past" or anything like that : )

USA, Canada / Think you're Polish (and live in the USA)? [161]

i dont really see many downsides to having a British passport

Depends on where you are travelling e.g. extremists are likely to hold you accountable in some shape or form as being an ally of the US. Britain could be seen as hostile in its own right by some. More likely to be kidnap victim etc.

Whilst usually nothing to be alarmed about for most people, there are certainly less, shall we say, provocative passports to hold in Europe.

News / Polish cleaner blows the lid on 'dirty' Germans [124]

I don't care who you are, if you CHOOSE to live in a country, you should not complain about it and if you do, you should LEAVE IT.

You maybe don't mean it as literally as this but I certainly wouldn't necessarily agree with the above.

Why shouldn't someone complain about e.g. poor treatment, conditions, poor employers, being denied rights etc? If they are living and working legally and are the victim of injustice then they have as much right to complain as anybody - possibly more than many.

This is not a direct reference to the cleaner on this thread by the way, just a general comment.

If on the other hand they whine and complain about cultural differences, customs, food etc despite persisting in living there then fair enough - pi$$ off and don't come back or shut your ungrateful leeching mouth: )

News / Smoking ban in Polish bars and restaurants (AT LAST!) [400]

Or do you think that because of this, more fights happen outside of the bars and clubs?

The opposite has happened in Ireland with smokers getting all loved up and basically chatting each other up. Became known as smirting.

Language / cookery, word usage question [19]

80% of people in Poland know nothing about their levels of cholesterol

Really??

Do you have a link?

Ireland isn't exactly known to be the land of the healthy but everyone I know could be almost guaranteed to know their cholesterol levels at least.

Yeah you are maybe right.

Although I would turn to Thai on most occasions, regardless : )

Language / cookery, word usage question [19]

I agree Stu - but she is saying national "cuisine" as opposed to the food they create.

Paul Rankin & Richard Corrigan are Irish by the way : )

Language / cookery, word usage question [19]

The French? well, goes with out saying - the only nation in Europe as nationalistic as the the Poles ; )

As for the others - I'm not so sure. I know a few Spaniards who prefer Asian food. I know a few Chinese people who prefer Italian food to their own.

Doesn't prove anything in itself I know, but i don't really know very many Spanish or Chinese people either.

Love / Why are Polish women so sexy ? [390]

English girls without make up look horrible.

Well since we're generalising, how is it that so many Polish girls look like prostitutes from the 1980s?

Study / Polish schools and Polish educational system level in your eyes [135]

That is what they teach you outside Poland: chech wiki if you dont know. Congrats pal.

What are you talking about? Wiki is not an end or source as of itself ?!

Do you not understand how it works? You check the entry as a source for referring to the links contained therein.

Wait.

No.

Don't tell me you thought I was suggesting that whatever is written in Wiki is the gospel ??

So "congrats" to you pal if you are that narrow minded and blinkered about it all.

So for what's it worth, I would wipe my rear end with this ranking,

I mentioned one ranking, The Times, there are many others.

Broadly speaking the results are all fairly similar and share an obvious common denominator: UK universities are generally held in much higher regard than Polish ones.

Love / Good looking Polish women with ugly men [416]

Seriously though, classic male perspective - a bit of explicit drunken shenanigans and suddenly women are attractive.

Difficult to see the girls faces properly but to be honest, they don't appear to be particularly good looking or more specifically, sexy, from what I can see.

They might be doing sexy stuff alright but if that's all it takes, then by that token I am therefore Adonis.

Study / Polish schools and Polish educational system level in your eyes [135]

This has all come up before anyway Olaf. I've no interest in debating it as there is no debate to be had.

Do a search if you are interested: "European university rankings". The Times do one among others. Check them all. Methodology is explained. Poland doesn't rank highly in any.

Check the wiki entries for individual unis.

So what is the best polish uni then if not the Jagellonian?

edit: The OP seems to disagree with you BTW Olaf ; )

Study / Polish schools and Polish educational system level in your eyes [135]

Er no, it's not bollocks Olaf.

Best uni in poland is generally to be the Jagellonian - no?

It's ranked 300 odd in European rankings.

Doesn't matter how good you might think they are, Polish universities are simply not highly regarded in Europe.

News / Upping the speed limit in Poland [92]

It's not about impartiality though - in Ireland, objectively, it happens, simple as - southern drivers go mental in NI and NI drivers do the same in the south.

As soon as the Polish drivers cross the border, they don't care. I'm sure the same could be said for Czech drivers entering Poland too.
