Food / Are there any real kebab shops in Gdansk? [20]

So far I've only found kebeb shops that sell pork or chicken kebabs. Are there any shops that sell lamb kebabs-the real ones?

USA, Canada / Polish-American groups in Southern California [26]

I lived in San Diego for 25 years before coming to Poland. The weather here is slightly different, but there is no bad weather, only bad clothes, and weather is a state of mind.

News / For all Americans worried about Schengen in Poland, dont worry about it. [142]

Still, they should toughen up the long term (3 months +) rules for Americans - in fact, make it virtually impossible for them to obtain residency.

I'm curious as to why you favor that.

Not surprised this crap would come out of an american

Please don't tar me with the same brush.

Language / Use of A/An/The ...... Articles [186]

The most famous example is surely that of the astronaut who was supposed to say "One small step for a man, one giant leap for mankind" but instead said "One small step for man, one giant leap for mankind". Without the article "a" before it "man" is synonomous with "mankind" and thus the astronaut's proclaimation contradicted itself.

Wrong, Armstrong said he "would hope that history would grant me leeway for dropping the syllable and understand that it was certainly intended, even if it was not said – although it might actually have been".

It was said, as exhaustive examination of the recording has shown. But let's move on.

What's the difference between "I speak little Polish" and "I speak a little Polish"?

I love to teach articles as it's probably the hardest thing for speakers of any language which doesn't use them to comprehend.

Life / $3,000-$4,000 a month - would we have enough money to live in Poland? [273]

Great! no I have not been to Sopot or Gdansk since coming this time. Would love to go ! just do not speak enough Polish yet to go on my own :(

You don't need to speak Polish to go to Sopot or Gdansk on SKM, just some zl and a map. Oh, an Oxford English-Polish pocket dictionary would be handy as well. You can get one at Empik, and they'll order it for you if there are none on the shelf. Be adventurous.

Life / Moving to Poland - Checklist / Things to Consider [33]

You must be a crazy person but good luck to you.

Tak. Jestem wariat. :) It helps to be a little older to do what I did. Lots of life experience behind me when I came here.

Life / Moving to Poland - Checklist / Things to Consider [33]

My checklist was

No car

No money

No job

No friends

Very little Polish

Some things have changed, except no car and no money. Still, it's been a great four years, and unless things completely unforeseen occur, I'm planning on staying in Poland until I croak.

Law / Does Poland have the most prehistorical and strictest banking system in the world? [57]

Two years ago I received an unexpected check from the US Treasury, probably some kind of Obama incentive. I took it to my bank and they had to verify that it was real before they would put the money in my account. It took four months. Checks are a major pain! Wire transfers are quick and easy.

It's not.

Maaarysia, thanks for your help with this. I really appreciate it.

Love / Any particular Polish customs or traditions that I should know about in my relationship? [45]

Another particular customs in Poland are All Saints Day (Wszystkich Świętych) on November 1st

An absolutely beautiful custom, and one of my favorites. You have to see a Polish cemetery at sunset to really appreciate this day.

Another custom not widely known is the blessing of the food on Easter Saturday.

Also beautiful.

Bzibzioch, tell him about wigilia.

Work / Native English speakers giving private lessons in Krakow? [10]

Not for me, but a friend of a friend is looking for Brits or Americans in Krakow who give private lessons. My friend's a doctor who's FCE/advanced, but I don't know yet about her friend's level. If you're interested, either reply here or send me a pm. Thanks in advance.

Life / Best place to buy winter clothing in Warsaw [11]

You will all get sick in your first winter, so be prepared.

Not necessarily. I'm from San Diego and I didn't get sick in the four winters I've been here. But warm clothes are a must.

Real Estate / Poland house prices recovered faster - Summary of 2010 [89]

I have twice listed the definition of a Ponzi scheme and how each point fits a property market. You and Harry have given not single argument of why its not a ponzi. Nothing.

And twice you've been wrong. Harry has explained a Ponzi scheme to you repeatedly, as have I, and I provided a link for your education. I can't believe how obtuse you are on this point nor how ignorant you are about it. Are you really that afraid to admit that you're just flat out wrong?
