Work / Is 7000 PLN net per month....a reasonable salary in Katowice [40]

Monthly pay is 2500 net a month

That's terrible money mate.
You could stack shelves in Tesco and earn as much....you'd have to work the night shift, but really 2500zl is terrible money.
Rent in Katowice is roughly 1000zl per month.

Honestly, you'd really be wanting closer to 2500 per week than per month.

Study / English primary schools for foreigners in Katowice [15]

sorry, I thought you were talking about

No biggie, Saul Goodman :)

: no, I don't teach English...

Sorry, I don't know where I got that from

Just reread that, sorry if I sound like an ass :/

When living in Poland, everybody knows that there are not plentiful. Cheaper private schools too have waiting lists. The only way is to approach the expensive ones (not necessarily the best though ;)).

Personally have looked into it coz I've a kid on the way, but we've been told we'll need to go private coz we're both self-employed. Apparently the state thinks we're feckin millionaires, all they'd have to do is a simple means test and see we'd more than likely qualify......but y'know it's Poland, I'm sure somebody knows somebody who knows somebody who'll sort us out.......for a fee :/

Study / English primary schools for foreigners in Katowice [15]

It is very difficult to get admission to state facilities since very long waiting lists.

Oh lord, I'm far too middle class to send my (non-existent) kid to a state school. Especially preschool. Polish state schools are normally better than private one, but I've been in my fair share of state preschools and I wouldn't house a dog in some of them.

in Warsaw

You see that's your problem right there :D

they have to send their kids to private facilities

Problem solved :)

In Poland, people don't "just come" and have their kids admitted to state facilities.

OK, let's have a proper look at what I wrote:

there are loads, it's a racket though (isn't all education really) so check them all out before sending off your wee'un.

So by saying 'it's a racket though (isn't all education really)' I'm quite obviously talking about private preschools :D
I thought you taught English?

Can someone suggest me for school medium school for my 4+ yrs kid

yea, as Harry says, you need to look for a 'przedszkola' in your area.
Don't worry, there are loads, it's a racket though (isn't all education really) so check them all out before sending off your wee'un.

News / Pole-basher Gross up to old tricks [284]

"methodology".

enlighten me bro

I don't know this dude at all, never heard of him until today.
He wrote an article where he linked proof to what he was saying.
If you can show me proof that he's talking out his ass then cool.

So yea, please if you can I'd be interested to see research that contradicts him.

The problem is that the idiot Polish nationalists give the impression that all Poles deny that any crimes were committed by Poles, which clearly isn't true

Oh clearly not. I have a couple of Polish friends who are deeply ashamed of what happened after the war. I didn't really know about such things until that film from last year, Ida (a really bad film I must say) reopened some wounds.

the worse it makes them look and the less likely a genuine denial is to be believed.

Indeed Jon

Just had a read of it there.

Don't understand what the problem is really.
Sure it might be uncomfortable reading for Poles, but it is what it is.
If idiot nationalists want to deny that part of their history then that's their problem. Won't change anything, it certainly happened.

Work / Career Options for ExPats in Poland? English native speaker from Los Angeles. [10]

find a pin and pop that ballooning ego.

:D :D :D

Poor old Dom. He's really a nice chap, he just gets in a bag mood sometimes and has a rant about people daring to come to Poland in case they might take some of his work. His bark is worse than his bite though and his heart's in the right place.

OP, think long and hard about coming here: money is crap and needing a visa makes it pretty unworthwhile (I think I just made up a word) unless you're got sh!thot skills that Polish or EU citizens don't have.

Like you're gonna want 5000zl after tax to have a decent lifestyle here and demanding wages like that and getting an employer to jump thru hoops for a visa is as likely as finding a gay unicorn at a reunion of football hooligans.

Then again, you can come, just give private lessons and survive on 2000zl a month, you won't save money but you'll have a good time....you won't eat much eaither, but y'know, you're American and from what I know of Americans (other than your strange love for Donald Trump) is that almost all of you could do with losing a few lbs.

Godspeed!

Work / What salary can be asked at IBM Poland? [67]

how much i should be expect and what is cost of living in Katowice. in how much PLN i can get one room apartment on rent.

Take nothing less than 5000zl after tax, but try and get a lot more, like 8000zl per month.
Rent wpuld be approx: 1000-1500zl per month

[***************) I am married and what would be the competitive salary of a 5 years exp IT professional in Katowice? (Considering the fact of 30% tax)
Don't even think of moving to Poland for less than 5000zl per month after tax. It would be best for your wife to also get a job. 5000zl between 2 people isn't optimal. You'll survive, but you won't save money and you sure as chr!st won't enjoy it,

[***************) How much would be the monthly expenses for daily life (1 bedroom apartment, Gas, Electricity, Groceries, internet, Transport, etc)
Rent: 1000-1500zl per month.
Gas/Electricity: 300
Groceries: depends what you eat, anything from 500-1000zl per month
Internet & TV: 200zl per month
Phone: 100zl-200zl per month
Transport: I think a monthly bus & tram ticket is 300zl per month.

[**************]
3) My wife is an interior designer, Are there any jobs for interior designers?
Sure, get learning Polish though.

[**************]4) Does people in katowice speak Polish and English too?
People in their 30s and younger for the most part speak some English,it's pretty rare to find people in their 40s who spealk English. The woman working in your local convenience shop will not speak English, however, the waiter in the restaurant in the city centre will. Your bus driver won't, nor your newsagent. Most office staff would speak English though.

Good luck making your decision. Katowice has a bad reputation, but in the years I've been here it's improved year on year. It's safe, has nice bars, parks, restaurant. However, it's a lonely place on low wages so make sure and drive a hard bargain. No point in your travelling half way around the world to find yourself eating noodles and beans 6 days a week.

News / Poles v Tusk's school 'reform' [58]

It makes the job very hard and costs extra to get a classroom assistant in.

Just grinds everything to a halt. Really stupid situation. I don't know how to fix it. Maybe have new kids arrviing in a country attend language classes first.

That's probably doable in urban areas, but there'd be huge problems with it.

However in my own experience with the Irish kids who've been learning for two years their writing is fairly laboured and slow and still developing so again it's a minor issue. As far as expressing oneself on paper goes, generally six to seven year olds are beginners at that so it's not really a worry.

Ah OK, pretty interesting post.....maybe me auntie was a sh!te teacher ;)

News / Poles v Tusk's school 'reform' [58]

I found them to be great little students. They are generally bright, very well behaved in class and fast learners

Maybe I sounded a bit too harsh. She did like her pupils, but it's not an easy task having 'normal' 6 & 7 year olds who are up to speed on the curriculum and then you're landed with Pawel from Rzeszow who can't read/write his own language let alone English.

well, you're certainly a wonderful reason as to why the system needs changing.

I noticed one screaming infant dolled up in uniform just yesterday.

no, you didn't.
you probably saw a 5 year old
Infancy stops when a child learns how to speak, so no you certainly didn't see a screaming infant in a uniform attending a school.

babies in nappies and school uniforms

babies in school uniforms?

Jaysus, what kind of f!cked up sh!t are you watching on the Internet. Most countries you'd be arrested for that.

Majority of kids can read and write

No they can't.
I actually worked in a preschool here....not called

kindergarten

either, that's a German word. Why would Polish people call a preschool using a German word? Maybe you're a secret German.....that's what Chairman Jaro calls Silesians :D

An odd situation.

A ridiculous one. I've a relation in England who is a school teacher. She said that she dreads seeing new Polish kids after every summer coz they are so utterly useless in classes, they can barely read or write their own language but she has to introduce simply maths to them in a language they're no idea about. And the parents expect her to work miracles on their kids and they can't even read!

Y'know, stupid people are just stupid.

Travel / Information on Gliwice needed [41]

Depending on where you live in the city, I'd say 3,500-4,000zł (net) would be a good start for two persons (with two dogs).

I'd agree, if that's each of course.
4000zl between 2 people would be pretty rough, like your rent would be 1/4 of that so you wouldn't have a lot of spending power.

In terms of quality of life, the city center is probably a lot better. Nicer area, buildings, lots of public transportations, shops, etc.
In terms of costs (rents), I don't think the difference between the city center and the rest of the city is really important.

Yea, Polson is on the ball. Sure Gliwice is so small anyway that if you cycle or drive you're never far from the centre.

You don't drink???
I wouldn't move to Poland then, Christ you'll need it when it gets to -33C in the winter ;)

5400 for a single person is OK, it's above average. But once you take out your rent you won't be living like a king, but you should be fine. From personal experience in my first two years here I was getting around half of that per month and I survived and I drink like a fish ;)

News / Have PO (Platforma) operatives in Poland fallen into a panic? [332]

but capitalism with a human face -- not a dog-eat-dog society, cut-throat competiton, the mindless ratrace and de-humanised hyper-commerialisaiton of ever field of human endavour.

Sorry, but you can't simply have your cake and eat it.
Poland wanted capitalism and has had to play catch up.
If they'd chosen the softly softly approach then they'd have gone with the Russian approach to changing over, and look where that has brought those poor f!ckers.

That should be a kind of third road with room for higher things, a cultural mission, human interaction (being destroyed today by mega-gadgetarianism) and spiritual values.

That's your interpretation. I certainly wouldn't want to live in an economy where things like what you've listed are allowed to dictate market prices. Demand and supply baby, that's how it works.

Increasingly females want to first complete their education, start a career and often put child-bearing off to the biological limits of mid to late 30s

Good, good, last bit is nonsense. Please, try and prove your 'learned' opinion regarding this. And with proper medical journals, not crappy Polish far right websites which you tend to rely on.

How they run the mines from then on would be their responsibility

You're into syndicalism Delph? Poor auld James Connolly was a Scot like yourself and his plan was for it to take hold in the Irish Republic had the failed 1916 Rising been successful.

Shouldn't the educators of society be convincingly showing people there is more to life than "spożywać i wydalać" (consume and excrete)

There is a lot more to life than that, if that's all you are experiencing then you're living your life the wrong way. But by the same token, if people do want to live that way then who are you to judge. Let people be happy and let them choose their own path.

Atch

Excellent post :)

In Poland, kids learn to write and read at later age and I have met several language teachers who had a hard time to teach them...

I remember I had to teach a group of 6 year olds once....long story short, asked them to get out their copy books to write and the teacher told me they couldn't write, to wich I said....'oh **** are these disabled kids coz I haven't prepared something appropriate if they are' She says 'no, in Poland you learn to read when you're 7.' To which I laughed...and she looked at me like I had 3 heads ;)

I didn't bother teaching there again.

Work / Job offer in IT company ( Wroclaw ) - help needed [15]

is it good for a single person to live in Wroclaw as all the expenses will be on me

If it's 7700 after tax you'll be more than fine, especially since you're single, if you had to support a partner you'll probably struggle on it.

Rent for you is gonna be anything from 1200-2000 per month I reckon, depends on where. I'm not close to Wroclaw so I can't give advice.

I guess the company will not help me with the flat rent / accommodation or bank account creation

No harm in asking them to help you look for places, after all, they want you to relocate so they should help. As such a company, they surely have someone there to help foreigners settle.....They'll help with a bank account at least.

have a look on gumtree.pl...wroclaw....actually I'll get a link for you....

gumtree.pl/s-mieszkania-i-domy-do-wynajecia/wroclaw/v1c9008l3200114p1

you need to search for 'mieszkania i domy do wynajecia' that's houses and apartments for rent.

whisk the kids through school and kick them into the rat race ASAP for they can start making their pile early on

Only a retard would think that's a bad idea.

They've got a whoel life ahead them also at 25, so why the big rush?

If you knew the actual situation in Poland you might become aware of the fact that the ageing population is going to be a huge motherf!cker of a burden to the coming younger generations. Get them working and get them paying tax, coz the lazy b!stards that live here even want to lower the retirement age.

Idiots.

The PO-led government has been forcing through its project to have 6-year-old start school despite parents' disagreemen

So hilarious the way Polish kids don't learn how to read or write until they're 7!
WTF is wrong with you lot?
Jaysus I started school when I was 4.

So stupid that Polish students don't finish university until they are in their mid twenties. Get them finished college and out working by the age of 22.

News / Referendum to cost Polish taxpayers nearly 130 mln zl amid uncertain turnout [29]

but was it really necessary to spend 130 million (ZL) on something not crucial and about which nobody cares?

Well, y'know, it's like everything here, the money's been misused.
Surely 10-15% of it could've been used to inform the electorate of the issues and other relevant info.

I'd rather have my tax ZL go to schools, hospitals, transportation, people in need

wouldn't we all, and less stupid military toys too

Half way through CD 2 and no response

Well done on sticking with it.

I've been living here for 6 years now and of all of the other foreigners I know living in Poland, not one speaks it.
So well done.

I've tried almost everything, lessons, CD roms, paid internet lessons/subscriptions, skype lessons, proper language school lessons, rosetta stone and all I can say is that Polish is pretty much impossible to learn.

I'm gonna give it one more shot though.

But, y'know, really I'm hoping that this day comes soon:
