Food / What's your favorite Polish beer? [870]

I was in £omża last Tuesday. ;)

But as far as I remember I've never tried the beer. Even though they have it in all cities in the Podlaskie region (I think).

£omźa

It thought it was local? Their advertisement says for example "W Warszawie tego nie ma".

Love / Are there Polish women who date black guys? [281]

Pgtx is right. Many Poles are not in GB for life and are not looking for marriage, more for money.

My observation is that Poles who go to the U.S. want to start a new life.

Poles who go to the UK want to earn money, and the vast majority of them return to Poland within 5 years.

Travel / Narrow roads in Poland :-) [7]

I drove one of the best MC roads I've seen so far in Poland a few days ago.

Road 58 between Szczytno and Olsztynek (not Olsztyn, that's road 53) in Mazury. Fun road, very beautiful forest and many lakes.

Travel / Is it safe to travel to Poland? [194]

How the h*ll can you judge the city after what happened to 1 single person?

This things happens every day in most cities in the world.

In the statistics Gorzow Wielkopolski is nr 18 of 39 in crime rate. That means it's an average Polish city.

Language / będzie potrafił? [34]

What do you guys say about the difference between będzie mógł and będzie potrafił?

Maybe będzie potrafił is used for a single specific action, and będzie mógł is for repeated/habitual/non-specific actions? Or? It's a tricky verb.

Language / będzie potrafił? [34]

"potrafić" is an imperfective verb

perfective verb potrafić

Potrafić has a special feature, it can be used in both imperfective and perfective aspects.

Please refer to 301 Polish Verbs by Janecki.

What do you guys say about the difference between będzie mógł and będzie potrafił? I don't really get that one.

Life / What are the poorest regions of Poland? [15]

The Eastern half of Poland always has been the poorest and less developed.

Podlaskie (North Eastern Poland) has now the best roads in Poland.

Only 12 percent of the domestic routes in Podlasie are in very poor condition. Most of the surface does not require immediate repair.

In the Podlasie region almost 70 percent of the route are in good condition. This is the best result in Poland. In the report, prepared by the General Directorate of National Roads and Motorways, was rated the condition of the roads in 2009.

Language / to go s/where [13]

if you know the errors in the link i would be glad to hear them.

The biggest error: isc - to go, chodzic - to walk
Iść can also mean to walk, and chodzić can also mean to go. This classification doesn't make sense at all.

Często chodzę do kina.
Idziemy na spacer.

No, it's just perfective version of iść.

Which expresses future when it's conjugated.

Pójdę, pójdziesz, pójdzie etc.

However, I agree that other tenses (e.g. conditional) doesn't have to express future.

Language / Difference between Polska & Polsce? [26]

try Finnish or Hungarian, Irish or Basque.

Or if sb thinks Polish grammar is difficult, try Greek.

Polska - w Polsce
Sen - we śnie
Dom - w domu
Ulica - na ulicy

And maybe 4 examples:

Mieszkam w Polsce.
Dwa serca łączą się we śnie.
Jesteśmy w domu.
Na ulicy widziałem Cię.

Language / Difference between Polska & Polsce? [26]

i believe it's we śnie no?

True. Thanks.

However, w and we are 2 aspects of the same preposition. So there are no differences in grammatical rules. In grammar books you usually find only w. But the we-aspect is treated the same. The only reason the we-aspect exists is to make some words easier to pronounce.

Language / Difference between Polska & Polsce? [26]

When do you use Polska and when do you use Polsce ?

It's the locative case. It's used when you say that something is in or on somthing else.

This means that the word after w (we) and na is very likely to take the locative case.

In Poland, in the dream, on the steet, in the house etc.

Polska - w Polsce
Sen - we śnie
Dom - w domu
Ulica - na ulicy

UK, Ireland / Are Polish people importing a new wave of ancient racism into the UK? [402]

I have heard of non-white racism against and between other non-white groups (Africans and Asians).

it is interesting that a lot of racism in UK also comes from immigrants themselves.

One of the most common forms of racism in most European countries with a lot of minorities.

But different minorities being racist toward each other is nothing people talk about.

That is not proper grammar

It was a word by word translation from Polish. Can be useful for the understanding of the structure of the Polish language.

There are a few mistakes in the thread the link refers to.

Language / to go s/where [13]

Welcome back!

pójść

Will go (future)

But in every-day-language iść (present tense) can also be used to express future events in many constructions. Actually, in many situations the present (iść) sounds better to express future than the "real" future word (pójść). This is not regulated by a rule, but something one can only learn with experience.

chodzić

This is used instead of iść when you go on habitual basis. That you do something regularly, or repeated actions.

E.g.

Często chodzę do kina - I often go to the cinema (repeated actions)
Jutro idę do kina - Tomorrow I'll go (lit. I'm going) to the cinema (a single action)

USA, Canada / US Polonia 70% for Kaczyński [343]

I am surprised that you "educated' folks would not want vote for the most educated person running - Kaczyński.

Well educated? At my university the vast majority would not vote for Kaczynski. And it's in one of the most "traditional" parts of Poland.

It's a statistical fact that Kaczynski gets most of his votes in rural areas, where the level of education is low.

Travel / Ultra cheap trains in Polish trains [8]

You should explain what kind of tariff it was.

I guess he refers to InterRegio. It's extremely cheap, but the comfort is not good. You get what you pay for. For short trips it's no problem.

InterRegio Wawa-Krakow is 40 zl in 2nd class (bilet normalny). It takes 3:15 h.

USA, Canada / US Polonia 70% for Kaczyński [343]

Komorowski got more votes in the first election. The final duel will be 4th of July.

Results in different regions
wybory.gazeta.pl/wybory/1,106728,8045581,Ostateczne_wyniki_I_tury___zobacz__jak_glosowaly_regiony.html

Very interesting that Komorowski won all województwo's in Western Poland, and Kaczynski won all in Eastern PL.

The biggest surprise is that Komorowski is verypopular in województwo warmińsko-mazurskie. Which is usually considered to be more conservative than several other regions where Kaczynski got a much better result.
