News / Poland -- Europe's only counterweight to Russia [271]

Poland is definitely NOT Europe's only counterweight to Russia - out of the border countries even Turkey has a more powerful army.

You can't alter geography. And Poland is the major Slavic country within the EU. And yes, it is a great counterweight to Russian ambitions in the region.

Work / Never work for Mike Mills in Warsaw [28]

The way I heard it

Is probably nonsense. And since the majority shareholder at the time is sat right next to me now, it is certainly wrong.

One wonders who is posting and why. Probably somebody fired for an inability to teach good lessons and turn up on time.

Like the one fired due to claiming for lessons he never showed up at and whose TV station wife just dumped him, or the other one (with no qualifications who asked for a sub every week) that's washed up in Tarchomin and doesn't have enough cash for a ticket home. Or the American dork who used to post here (Chris something in real life - his username here I tactfully 'forget' ) who was fired for sheer f*ckwittedness and was last heard of trying to blag money of ex-employers who fired him because he was sat on the platform at Dworzec Centralny waiting for a train back to Zielona Góra and couldn't afford even a bottle of water.

The owner of Mike Mills, (meaning Mike Mills) as I understand it was absolutely great but developed serious health problems which affected his interpersonal relationships and all spilled out onto YouTube. It's one of those things that people who ae the most dynamic and decent in life can also go a bit potty

Whereas the crappest and most tawdry in life can just sit on the wings (or beyond them) and snipe (inaccurately) at people who achieve so much more than they ever could.

Get well soon Mike, people's thoughts are with you!

And don't let the betamale underachievers grind you down!!!

News / Poland -- Europe's only counterweight to Russia [271]

Read the thread title, before commenting inanely. It's about Poland's role as a geopolitical counterweight.

Remember Poland is a full member of both NATO and the EU.

Rather off-topic, as per usual. The important thing is the triumph of democracy, and the role of Poland (which cherishes democracy) as a counterbalance to the geopolitical ambitions of Russia.

Law / I want to run a Persian (Iranian) restaurant in Poland! [46]

How many restaurants do collapse after a few months?

Almost all of them on Nowy Świat, especially the ones with a "great idea". Some of the premises there really do have a new sign over the door every few months.

The ones that survive are the ones who keep it simple

Even my favourite French/Polish restaurant in Muranow eventually closed. And it was good.

Personally I'd (maybe, but only maybe) go to an Afghan or Arabic restaurant to see what it was like but probably wouldn't go again unless it was brilliant, cheap and had an alcohol licence. And remember I've eaten a lot of Arab food and also some (excellent) Afghan dishes. Most in Warsaw would stick to either what they know or to what was very heavily advertised.

It might not be what Ebrahim wants to hear, but in his position I'd stick to takeaway kebabs, zapiekanka or maybe pizza - and only if I had the perfect location and premises.

News / How will BREXIT affect the immigrants in UK and Poland. [1114]

The Australia thing isn't realistic. It's too far away and it's hard to imagine the unskilled agricultural, warehouse and retail workers from Eastern Europe being replaced by people from Australia, RSA etc.

Like it or not, Europe is much nearer.

Nothing wrong with being a nationalist

Europe, including Poland, has suffered in the past through nationalism and nationalist politics is, rightly, off-putting to many.

Much better than selling out to foreigners and promoting foreign cultures

You seem to by trying to present it as an 'either/or' situation whereas in fact polls show that Poland is one of those EU member states which supports the Union most.

Moderation always defeats extremism in the end.

News / Poland -- Europe's only counterweight to Russia [271]

To Poland? I said "a threat to POLAND's security". Poland is no Ossetia or Crimea.

Well..... They've actively threatened Poland as demonstrated already. Not to mention the economic sabre-rattling...

As Kosovo was a part of the same sovereign state

Kosovo's sovereignty is recognised by most countries including yours and mine. The Russian invasion of Ukraine is not, hence the international sanctions.

News / How will BREXIT affect the immigrants in UK and Poland. [1114]

The benefits system is far from 'generous

This is true.

Should the Brexit happen (and by the way, actually leaving the EU would occur around 2 years after the referendum if at all; it wouldn't suddenly happen the day after the vote) the existing EU deals would be replaced by a treaty/treaties. One thing that wouldn't happen is the return of Europeans from the UK or a mass exodus of Brits from Spain, Poland, France.

In the case of a Brexit, it would very much be in Poland's interest (and to a lesser extent Britain's too) not to rock the boat.

Only PiSare cocnerend about repolonising commerce

So in effect nationalistic.

I wonder about the much vaunted (by you) return to Catholic moral values sits with them in the light of Duda's personal life.

News / New 2016 poll. The attitudes of the Poles toward other nations [26]

So basically three groups they don't like. Russians are perhaps the easiest to understand. The Belarussians are low too. Apart from the southern neighbours, so much for so-called Slavic unity.

trying to belittle me,

You do it to yourself so thoroughly.

News / Foreign investors fear Poland's instability [26]

"One of the great advantages of doing business in Poland had been that you could rely on a stable and predictable political landscape that was pro-business," says Ben Habib, managing director of First Property Poland, a fund manager with more than €300m in the Polish property market.

"It is interesting that throughout the credit crunch, Poland maintained its A-minus [credit] rating and within two months the new government managed to get downgraded."

Photo shop

You think all those hundreds of photos taken from different places and different angles were photoshopped? As conspiracies go, that one would be on such a scale that it would be history's biggest and best organised!

Perhaps they should have got Jolanta Solarz to pose in them too.

Try harder Po...

I would bet my property on Cameron

The status quo does tend to win, doesn't it.

The big danger here is about the demographic who tend to vote. the risk is that it will be the elderly and the first time voters. Fortunately the expat vote will help to counteract that.

News / Poland -- Europe's only counterweight to Russia [271]

"please tell me what threat Russia represents to Poland's security nowadays".

See all posts above, pointing out the recent occasions in which Russia has demonstated itself to be a threat.

Again, you only mentioned Google, and we both agreed, Google is not a "source".

Don't be silly, google it yourself...

Historically, Western Ukraine has "always" been pro-EU, while Eastern Ukraine tends to be more pro-Russia.

And all regions of Ukraine are part of the same sovereign state. this is acknowledged by Poland and the world community, hence the sanctions on Russia.

And why Szydło (well, Kaczyński really) climbed down after all their sabre-rattling over benefits.

They know the cash for all those infrastructure projects has to come from somewhere....

Obviously a rich country of 60 million people stopping signing the checks plus all those food exports matter...

News / Demonstrations in Poland in defence of democracy. [2554]

so far he has not denied it, so
it must be true.

Yeah right, as if half the town are talking about it public exposure doubtless on its way...

With PiS, you always have to ask Cui bono? It certainly isn't the people of Poland. One reason for the Polish pro-democracy movement is the people's natural concern that they are playing right into Russia's hands. Everything they say, everything they do.

people will certainly wake up when they realise that PiS is leading the country to international isolation and economic ruin.

A lot have, but of course most people just hate the instability. Remember the relief when PiS were kicked out mid-term? After just 17 months wasn't it. That evening the whole town was full of people celebrating.

Do you really think that by simply repeating lies about protesters being paid by the Jewish bogeyman your ilk have traditionally relied upon that people will find your lies to be any less laughable?

Especially when the talk of the town is that the Russian government 'may' be paying some of PiS PR consultants.

Interesting if it's true - there will doubtless be proof, Worth mentioning that PiS have not denied it.

Travel / BBC'S Hairy Bikers come to Poland [13]

Yes it does. Are we talking about the same Poland show? This was first broadcast in the autumn - though of course that was UK only. Anyway, it's just been released on BBC iPlayer and I really recommend it!
