HAHAHA,

So you don`t know. :(:

Why are most PiS supporters so hopelessly uneducated? :):

Poland election result

Which one have in his program scaffold for all those commie traitors and all those rags who after 1989 jumped on the wagon with them to make fortunes on the expense of the nation?

Oh la la, you are a pessimist. I didn`t know that side of you.

However, you may be wrong about both politicians mentioned above. When in power 2005-2007, they were trying very hard to organize anti-commie and anti-system witch hunt but were eventually contained by lost elections.

Candidates as young men

Miller always dreamt of becoming a submarine crew member

Ziobro always dreamt of becoming a good boy:

Pawlak always dreamt of becoming a firefighter

Kaczyński always dreamt of becoming an actor:

Komorowski always dreamt of becoming a boy scout

and defender.

Life / Why is cheating at schools in Poland accepted?! [155]

Not much of a deterrent lol

Yes, British and Australian schools apply harsher penalties:

For some major tests, such as GCSEs in the UK or NAPLAN in Australia, you may get all your test results cancelled if you are caught cheating. For example, if you were found cheating in a math test, you would get all your math marks taken away and also possibly in every other test such as English, geography, etc. The worst sanction is to be banned from all the exam boards for five years, which means no A-levels or university. (You can guess what that will mean when you start looking for a job.). Consequences for cheating in the Junior/Leaving Certificate in Ireland include being banned from state exams for five years.

It is a good solution and it might be useful in Poland too.

What's equally incredible is the fact that if caught in the act of ściąganie nothing really happens of consequence to the offender!

The offender has to sit the exam again.

Life / You've been in Poland a while if .... [49]

Falling apart on my plate is wrong visualisation. A better one is: melting on my tongue. It is a Polish saying about sth deliciously soft.

all meant in good humour

Naturally. :):):)

and let's say just medium rare, so pink but not bloody, is just so much nicer??

Sorry, no.

I am a perfectionist. Either raw or burnt. No intermediary states. :):):):)

- You get a check book in the mail from your new bank, and you look at it as if it was a relic!!!

What do you mean? I don`t get it. Sorry for taking your time.

* You spend 300zł on window netting to prevent an invasion of mosquitos during the summer.

Yes, I thought about it many times. But I am too lazy to design an anti-mosquito net which would resist my cats` claws.

I am thinking of training my cats to catch mosquitoes instead.

* You start calling your toes 'fingers' and assigning genders to inanimate objects. "Oh that's a nice phone" - "Yes, he's really good"

Yes, it is a real nuisance. I can`t make my younger students say it about unfamiliar animals and objects. The toothbrush is she and Plesiosaurus is he.

* Entering an occupied elevator without saying "dzień dobry" imparts that you are either (a) mute or (b) the spawn of the devil himself.

And saying it would impart that you are a pervert who is planning an attack. Or a conman who is planning to borrow 5 zlotys from the other pasenger.

That is why I very rarely say dzień dobry in the lift. Thus, I care about other people`s good mood.

* You grow a fondness for flavoured bottle waters - a la Żywiec

We don`t buy them.

Ok, twice or thrice a year at most. Especially during holidays.

* You appreciate that it's probably better to treat your serious medical condition or injury at home, rather than take your chances with the Polish emergency services

I rarely fall ill, but when it happens, yes, I examine myself and apply the treatment on my own. I don`t need any doctors because I know myself the best. And it isn`t about Polish doctors, no. I would do the same in Germany or France.

But my wife likes taking our sick children to a doctor. Such a hobby. I close an eye.

* You think it's normal that if there are multiple cash-places but only one queue of 10+ people, it's fair to bypass them.

Hmm, probably it is too strong a satire. Things are different, of course.

You'd have a pleasant surprise in Poznań then. There a few stations notorious for being "difficult to leave the tram" at. For the Poznanians here, they would be: Małe Garbary, Most Teatralny, Kórnicka and Półwiejska. You have to be very strategic about your positioning on trams to avoid being in situations where you have to ram people out the way like an American football player, or where you could be the one being rammed, crushed or pushed by babcie frantically trying to get off or on in case the tram left without them.

Sorry, it is hard to imagine. It sounds like a science fiction story from a galaxy far far away. Yes, you are probably telling the truth, but it is still unbelievable to me.

I hope the authors of the book are objective and also mention the German terror against Poles on territories that Germans wanted to keep for themselves.

Life / You've been in Poland a while if .... [49]

Yes, it is true. That is probably due to the beneficial influence of Krakow`s magic stone - Hindu Chakra. People must be good-natured and kind-hearted in such places. They are also more intelligent and have greater sense of humour than elsewhere. Simple.

chakrastone.eu/en_US/n/6

Chakra stone is believed to be a holy stone, one of seven mysterious energy sources placed in different locations around the world - the seven main energy centres of Earth. Chakra of Cracow is located on Wawel's hill - which was previously a centre of Pagan's worship, thereafter it turned into residence of Polish kings. The other six chakra stones are placed in: New Delhi, Delphi, Jerusalem, Mecca, Rome and Velehrad.

Lucky you! I live in Warsaw at the moment. Take a trip to Tesco in Kabaty and see for yourself :)

I reside in Krakow, and share my experiences in here.

The only problem with assistants I have is when some of them pass me a food product with their bare hands which earlier handled money. Then I politely refuse to accept it.

But it also happens very rarely now. Last time was on summer holidays 2011 in a small town near Krakow where a lady in an ice cream parlour tried to handle a waffle with bare hands.

Please tell me which post office you use, I'm going there next time. I have never been close to getting out within 15 mins.

If you live in a gigantic housing estate with one post office for a few thousand, it is possible, I suppose.

History / Why are Jews pestering Poland for "proper" WW2 monetary restitution/reparations? [750]

After a long search, I found this info on a German site:

In the part of Pommerellen which fell to Poland and in the Kulmerland, 433,000 (45 percent) had identified themselves as speaking Polish as their native language, 412,000 (43 percent) German and 105.000 (eleven percent) Casubian in 1910. 15,000 had stated that they were bilingual. Rigourous expropriation measures, enforced emigration and numerous bureaucratic hurdles resulted in hundreds of thousands of Germans being forced out of the territory. The German population of the territory of the voivodeship of Pommerellen fell from 421,000 (42.5 percent) in 1910 to 176,000 in 1921 and, finally, to 105,000 (10 percent) in 1931.

z-g-v.de/english/aktuelles/?id=56

Ok, it is quite possible that Germans or non-Poles in that region suffered hostilities by Poles.

Sorry about that.

But it is a common occurence when a victim takes over and takes a revenge. Poles retaliated for partitions and Prussian expulsions which had taken place before.

The Prussian deportations (or Prussian expulsions, Polish: rugi pruskie) were mass expulsions of ethnic Poles (and, to a lesser extent, Jews) from Prussia in between 1885-1890. Until today, the "rugi pruskie" or the Prussian mass deportations, serve as Polish national symbol of [...]

Poland - 38 million - 560 members of Parliament and Senate
Germany - 80 something million - 691 members of Bundestag and Bundesrat.

See the difference?

Do you mean in Ireland people don`t abide to traffic laws like Poles do?

Or you expect a lovely juicy steak to be fried for twenty minutes instead of four until it's indistinguishable from any other meat.

Correct. Either raw or extremely well-done. Rare, bleeding steaks are horrible perversion for my Polish taste. I am not a vampire.

* You accept that simply going to post a letter takes half the god damn day.

Depends on the damn day. Sometimes it is 1 minute, sometimes 15.

* You are no longer bothered/shocked/infuriated by shop assistants using mobile phones or having an in depth conversation with each other whilst serving you....good customer service- What's that?

You must have been to Poland long ago. I haven`t seen such incidents for years now.

... you realise that Elbows are not just the bendy bit of your arms but the most potent weapon and the main use is getting on or off Trams, Oh, and that that sweet little old Nun who barely comes up to your chest has the sharpest Elbows of all....

Not in Krakow. I seldom use public transport but whenever it happens, I feel people are quite considerate.

choosing a fabric soften takes longer than a half hour and requires the opening and smelling of each brand, colour, smell of fabric softener---and this happens each and every grocery day. (not in my house-just my observations)

That`s sth new.

You've been in Poland a while if ... you think wearing seat belts is for pussies. (so you fix your car so that the seatbelt beep doesn't ever go off)

A thing of the past. I knew a young man who played a bravado with seat belts but that was about 12 years ago.

Today my passengers don`t need reminding and they dutifully fasten seat belts.

Language / Mam silnego kaca! Why is this genitive/dopełniacz? [34]

I can't remember now where I got it, but it is probably from the internet. Thanks.

Yes, it is there, but almost all links direct you to a disco polo song by MC Makler. They used silnego to get a rhyme for browara zimnego - cold brew.

Normally you would say: straszny, potworny, potężny, zajebiście mocny. These expressions are much stronger than silny for a good reason - unless the hangover is splitting and rips your head into pieces, it is useless for Poles to talk about it - waste of time.

PS. BTW, a nice song. :):):):):):)

Nope, the Polish model is not so bad as it assumes a healthy balance between three bodies: The President, the Prime Minister and the Parliament.

Too bad the Sejm has not been trimmed down to let's say 150 or 200 MPs and the Senate to 50. Too many darmozjady!

150 - 200 would be probably too low for a country of 38 million but around 300 - why not.

The next president of Poland will be Jarosław Gowin. Some analysts beleive he will soon break away from PO and set up a new party of his own. It cannot be ruled out that SP and PJN will join in and the new party will attract an exodus from both PO and PiS.

And he vehemently denies any allegations of the sort.

Yeh, how many times in the history of this forum did you have to write that and similar? The first time was in 2008, when you and joined and I remember those discussions with obsessed antisemites.

Such discussions used to be interesting to me but now I feel I am losing time. :):):)

Sorry.

RevokeNice: Get off the Palestinians damn land and take the jews in europe with you.

It was people like you who wanted us out of Europe, so we went to Israel. Now you want us out of there too.

So true.

Well it must be after WWII then, why did you bring the Treaty of Versailles ?

Nope, after WW1 some parts of Prussia were regained by Poland, indeed.

So, if we talk about technical land transfer, it is correct - such a thing did happen.

The problem arises when we want to discuss Peter`s claim of persecution of his grandparents which resulted in their leaving the horse farm in Prussia. That simply doesn`t hold water for that time.

It sounds like post WW2.

History / Why are Jews pestering Poland for "proper" WW2 monetary restitution/reparations? [750]

Whilst I have every sympathy with Poland's sufferings at the hands of Germans and Russians, and do not consider it legal proper and just at all, I must remind you that both sets of my Grandparents family lost property in Prussia, not Poland, Prussia,

During the Thirteen Years' War ("War of the Cities"), in February 1454, the Prussian Confederation, led by the cities of Gdańsk (Danzig), Elbląg (Elbing), and Toruń (Thorn), as well as gentry from Chełmno Land (Kulmerland) sent a delegation with Johannes von Baysen to ask the Polish king for support against the Teutonic Order's rule and for incorporation of Prussia into the Polish kingdom. King Casimir IV Jagiellon appointed Baysen as the first war-time governor of Royal Prussia.

As a result of the Union of Lublin in 1569, Royal Prussia's autonomy was abolished and the region was united with the Polish Crown.

I just told you that it's not so much a coincidence when looking at Poles who come from a particular part of the country, your map even points that out.

Using reason in a discussion isn`t your biggest asset, that`s for sure. Funny that most PiS supporters are like that. :):):):):):)

Never mind. I will live with that.

What territories you are calling south-eastern Poland - that is interesting.

Probably the regions which are in the south and east part of Poland.

And not so much a coincidence since most Poles in the US are already pro PiS. I also come from southeastern Poland which is very pro PiS.

Yes, that`s interesting. I have just thought that most US Poles` origin can be traced back to south-eastern Poland.

BTW, you should be more careful what you write. E.g., this one

I've heard from many Poles that they like this party.

might have caused a serious misunderstanding. It sounded like Polish Poles while you meant US Poles.
