News / A Second Look at Poland's Future. [21]

I have developed a keen interest in Polish politics.

Great! Welcome to the club!

I was hoping that the fellow members of "Polish Forums" would be willing to share some of their concerns about the nation's future.

I can`t share any concerns because I prefer to look on the bright side of life.

It's pretty obvious that we're (as a nation) not going in the right direction.

Who can say which direction is right?

Read a newspaper that isn't affiliated with government propaganda

Then, there is a great chance one will run into a newspaper filled with the opposition black propaganda.

Better yet, go to Poland and ask a bus driver with a master's degree in history about government.

Do you suggest that holders of degrees in history mustn`t be bus drivers?

Life / Let`s compare prices of services and products in Poland [359]

Avalon, you are an expert, indeed, but a partial one. As a developer, you are vitally interested in pulling down old blocks and moving their lodgers to new houses built by your company.

That is why I have to take everything what you say with a big grain of salt. Actually, it is a lump of salt from Wieliczka Salt Mine.

One day or another those old communist blocks will be pulled down. But not because of collapse risk.

First prefabricated blocks were built in Poland in late 1950s. None has crashed so far.

It was not until 6 people were killed in the UK (Ronan Point disaster) that action was taken to demolish these death-traps.

The problem is that the mentioned house was partly demolished due to gas explosion.

You don`t expect that people will start pulling down blocks in Poland to reduce the risk of gas explosion?

Come on......

1995, massive gas explosion struck a block in Gdańsk:

Life / Let`s compare prices of services and products in Poland [359]

These were constructed with an expected lifespan of approx. 50 years (that's assuming that they were built to specs) and you think that they will last another 200 years?

You deem yourself an expert? :):):):) Come on.

Provide one example of a Polish communist-built apartment block which has collapsed.

Like in China

Stay off the subject of property, it's not your strong point.

Best laugh I have had today. Stick to IT or farming, you know FA about construction.

Sorry, those incantations of yours sound ridiculous.

Conclusion: communist apartment blocks will last as long as people desire to live in them.

News / Should Poles care who becomes French President or is it irrelevant? [45]

No one is "scarred" of the "socialists" ;)

Again, a fallacy.

dailysquib.co.uk/business/3321-wealthy-french-to-leave-sink ing-ship-france.html
PARIS - France - Like rats jumping from a sinking ship, the rich French are leaving the country as the socialist election win becomes a reality leaving many in the lurch.

One thing that is normal in business and finance is that socialists make stock markets go down and right wingers make it go up. In the case of Sarkozy, even though he was a right winger, he still managed to cock up the markets, but the general rule usually remains about the markets. Socialists are only good at spending other people's money, and when that runs out they just put the taxes up to huge levels.

Travel / What do you think about hitchhikers in Poland? [33]

The only hitchhiker I had noticed in Poland resembled a prostitute. I was surprised to see her hitchhiking along the countryside, while I was on route from Warsaw to Treblinka.

I also saw her. She wasn`t a hitchhiker.

History / Early 80s - Could just anybody come stroling on in? [11]

Specifically, under the communist governement at the time; could foreigners just fly in ?; was there a 'permit" required to enter; would Americans have an "escort" or be free to roam during those turbulent Solidarity years?

The first Solidarity times, until martial law, are sometimes called the time of freedom. Censorship was curbed substantially, the party members seemed lost and scared, secret services tried to avoid open confrontation.

So, there was a great chance that an average American visiting Poland at that time was left alone and could do what he/she wanted.

UK, Ireland / Sooo many Polski Sklep in the UK, LOL [64]

Polish branded Orange Juice, Polish Branded Tinned Fish

Of course, that is silly simplification. There must be more typical Polish goods than orange juice or tinned fish in that shop.

Try harder next time. I mean - don`t be so superficial.

Life / Poles always ask how much money you earn. Why do they do this? [30]

I was having a discussion with my friend (Polish, but born in Canada).

I thought about it and realised that Poles don`t ask other Poles about their earnings. I don`t remember being asked such a question during my 21- year career. Whenever I revealed it, it was my own initiative.

The fact that foreigners who come to Poland are confronted in this way, suggests certain Polish stereotypical perception of Western countries. The stereotype is the following: most Poles believe that people in the West earn decent sums and in result, can freely talk about their earnings. If they don`t, it might mean they are insincere and dishonest. No wonder those relatives looked a bit down. After hearing it is none of your business, I would smell sth illegal, e.g., drugs or prostitution.

My advice to guys from Western countries. Don`t shun discussions about your salaries. It is a purely innocent question. Avoiding it may only provoke distrust and suspicion. Do you really need it?

History / Are you proud of Polish colours? [27]

Nope, Her Brittanic Majness Queen Vicky's 17th Lancers at the time of the Crimean War against Ivan :)

After Napoleonic wars, Brits realised how useful lancer units might be and created their own ones, copying the Polish example.

Whilst in India, the British Army nominally re-classified the 17th as lancers,[12] and added "lancers" as a subtitle to its regimental designation in 1822.[2] The 17th did not learn of its new status until 1823, when, during a stopover at Saint Helena on its journey back to Britain, a copy of the Army List was obtained.[12] Although the weapon's use had endured in parts of continental Europe,[13] the lance had not been in British employ for more than a century.[14] Its reintroduction by the Duke of York, Commander-in-Chief of the British Army, owed much to the performance of Napoleon Bonaparte's Polish Uhlans.[15] The lancer regiments adopted their own version of the Uhlan uniform, including the czapka-style headdress.[16]

News / Poles are able to forgive their enemies - how noble. [68]

Yes. And the French are very critical about the British .

Long ago Poles forgave Slovaks their cooperation with Nazis and participation in the 1939 invasion of Poland.

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Slovak_invasion_of_Poland_%281939%29

The Slovak invasion of Poland occurred during Nazi Germany's invasion of Poland in September 1939. The recently-created Slovak Republic joined the attack, and the Slovak Field Army Bernolák contributed over 50,000 soldiers in three divisions. As the main body of the Polish forces were engaged with the German armies farther north of the southern border, the Slovak invasion met only weak resistance and suffered minimal losses.

It is very inspiring, isn`t it?

News / Poles are able to forgive their enemies - how noble. [68]

General Jaruzelski admitted in an interview that he is awaiting death. At 89, he lost hope and strength to fight off his cancer disease.

Poland Solidarity

I have been reading comments on news forums. Most are full of sympathy. Poles, taught at religion classes and regular church services to forgive, suggest that God will judge the General for his actions in communist Poland.

Strange.

Or not?

General Jaruzelski told the tabloid that he is too weak to go somewhere , or spend time actively . "I already have 89 years , I am in a very bad shape , so much I was already in this life . Already I was dying at home ," - he said.

Wife gene . Jaruzelski , Barbara Jaruzelska said in a recent interview with " Super Express " , that her husband did not have the energy to fight the disease . " Lymphoma plus chemotherapy for 89 -year-old man is a terrible combination . Able to effectively answer all forces to man " - she added.

Travel / Avoid being ripped off by some exchange outlets in Krakow and elsewhere [44]

Guys, especially the ones coming to Poland for EURO 2012, it is high time to refresh our knowledge about exchange sites where customers are ripped off.

In Krakow most outlets are OK, only a few use con practises.

A piece of advice: look carefully at the price which is displayed on electronic board in the window. If 10 outlets show 3.99 zlotys for one eur (just an example), the 11th might try to dupe careless clients by 3.39 zlotys.

Also, you should demand that the cashier/teller writes on a piece of paper the sum of money you give them and the sum you should receive after exchange. This might be used as a proof. Therefore, always carry a pen and a notebook. if he/she refuses, go to another outlet.

Here is a list of exchange outlets in Poland

History / Ukrainian-occupied Eastern Poland [135]

Really? Then please indulge me by answering the following questions:

Come on, Polo was only joking.
Although those American Poles love showing their hurra patriotism without considering consequences, in case of Eastern borders Polo is too intelligent to really believe what he is saying.

Life / You've been in Poland a while if .... [49]

Are you a doctor, then? Or just very sure of yourself / good on google? ; )

No, I am not a doctor, but I am a good observer, able to analyse my experience and draw right conclusions from my observations.

- you realize that "Nie, dziękuje." never works at the dinner table.

It depends how persuasive you sound. if you sound firm enough, nothing you don`t really want will be forced upon you.

- you say "Herbatka" not because you want tea, but because you don't want to hear the list of all possible drinks your host can provide.

That is a mystery to me.

- you pepper your English with Polish words because the Polish words fit better what you're trying to say.

Amusingly amazing. :)

- you laugh when someone mentions the A2

No comments. :):):)

A2 will be fully driveable except for 20-kilometer section near Warsaw.

News / Presidential elections and debates 2015 Poland [472]

Polo, you should read this article to learn that most Polish government officials do not go over the top with classy cars:

Summary:

Newspaper dealing with financial topics , " Business Pulse " , published official data on ministerial cars. What drive our ministers and why so often choose the product of our western neighbors - Skoda Superb ?

It turns out that the real hit among the ministerial fleet Skoda Superb . The reason is probably quite low price and good quality car. BMW 7 Series , which is one of the state ministries, is almost 4 times more expensive than the Skoda ! In the case of patching holes in the budget the money argument is of extreme importance when selecting specific models for Members.

Lancias are still used, even as old as 1997.

The most popular car is Skoda Superb.

Why? Because it is cheap and reliable.

History / Ukrainian-occupied Eastern Poland [135]

Does anyone in Poland use this phrase or really think that the Ukraine is occupying Polish land?

I have never heard it before.

Actually, none of my acquaintances in Krakow ever mentions those territories. It is a foreign country today.

Lands stolen from the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth by the aggressive partitoning powers are Polish.

You forgot to add ex before Polish.

What would be interesting though would be seeing a map of Europe if all the countries borders were redrawn to their 11th century equivalent as Poland's were in 1945.

Do you really want that? :(:(:(:(:

Compare the maps:

I wouldn`t like to lose so much seaside lands. Would you? I thought you love Poland.

Life / Why is cheating at schools in Poland accepted?! [155]

I posted these samples as it has pretty suprised me because I always thought that's really rare too cheat in other countries and everyone are really seriouse about it. Reading this thread I've just linked, I feel that I was pretty wrong and naive... the problem exists everywhere.

Google and find tens articles like this one:

March 2012
Tens of thousands of students in universities across Britain have been caught cheating in exams and coursework - and the trend is on the rise, according to a investigation by The Independent on Sunday.

Over the past three years, more than 45,000 students at 80 institutions have been hauled before college authorities and found guilty of "academic misconduct" ranging from bringing crib-sheets or mobile phones into exams to paying private firms to write essays for them.

But officials last night warned they were fighting a losing battle against hi-tech advances - which means it is becoming increasingly difficult to detect the cheats.

Tessa Byars, an advice services manager at Anglia Ruskin University Students' Union, warned that advances in technology had made it "nearly impossible" for universities to keep up.

independent.co.uk/news/education/education-news/45000-caught-cheating-at-britains-universities-7555109.html

Hundreds of students from Clear Lake High School in Houston tried to pull a fast one on their teachers by texting one another answers to a final exam last month.

newsfeed.time.com/2012/01/07/200-houston-high-schoolers-caught-cheating-on-exam

Experts are warning that the number of cheating teachers is also on the rise, both in UK and US :
