Travel / So I went to Warsaw - my thoughts after visiting Poland [88]

All of those three businesses are Polish and not having a spare terminal or putting on enough staff on the Saturday morning has got nothing to do with neo liberalism and everything to do with common sense.

Travel / So I went to Warsaw - my thoughts after visiting Poland [88]

Right - 99 percent of the time ?

I have been out to run a few errands this morning and already had 3 instances of poor service - in Smyk (not enough cashiers meaning a long line of stresses parents) in the Dry clean (card terminal not working) and in pizza hut (cold pizza, only margarita)

Its perfectly valid to call out poor service in Poland - its not about fake smiles but more about whether people can make your life a bit easier

Law / Unemployed Wife - Maternity in Poland / Parental leave for Father [4]

1 no
2 none
3 in theory then straight away. In reality then nobody is going to give her a job on a regular Polish ZUS eligible contract without her speaking or understanding Polish. I see more and more Indians employed in Warsaw but I doubt any of them on a full-time contract called Umowa Pracy

Work / My experience leaving Canada and going to Poland to find a job [19]

In work the culture is about halfway between a European type and an Anglo Saxon type. Poles are learning modern business ways quickly but there are a dee differences

It is not expected that you will go to the oub every friday with your colleagues- rather the reverse that they will often scoot off a bit earlier to start the weekend

On the other hand you are expected to attend and be cheeerful at company events (which is normally a bbq and beers next to some lake).

Law / Inheritance Law in Poland (protecting myself from in laws) [25]

But this clause would not work in Poland - the civil law is stronger than that clause and spouse, kids are entitled to a share whatever you write.

I have taken lots of advice both on this and which laws have precedence in different countries. I never got a simple or convincing answer - I concluded it will be easier to transfer assets while i am still alive.

Law / Inheritance Law in Poland (protecting myself from in laws) [25]

Your brother in law has some nerve - why have a kid if he cant support it ?

See a lawyer but as G says it might be best to put it in your own name though if you die first then it might be that your husband is back to square 1 and may have to use that to care for his mum (there is no legal obligation to provide for your brothers as far as I know)

Another possibility would be to put a small mortgage on the apartment in Poland, say for 10 percent of the value. That way nobody could try and get the apartment without also taking on the debt and while it's not much money for you it's a lot of money to a Pole who has no source of income.

I think at some point in the next 10 years the Polish inheritance laws will get a complete rewrite - in old days when everyone was a farmer or factory worker and nobody had any money and only small commie flats there was not always much worth arguing about.

Nowadays with wealth, emigration , more divorce, people living longer then the current system is just generating too many complications.

Life / Small change in shops in Poland!? [95]

In a 2 day trip to
Warsaw i think i have been asked for change maybe 10 times - mostly in nero, starbucks but also zabka, Carrefour, bookshop

The coffee shops have weird prices like 10.40 or 13.60 but then dont have change needed if you give them a 20

Life / Meeting new people in Warsaw [10]

If you don't like pubs and clubs that is fine but if you also don't want to attend sober meet ups or activities then you are going to struggle - your options will probably be the gym, work, online dating or cold approaching girls on the street or in a coffee shop (by the sounds of it that would be what you call sleazy chat up lines even though it is perfectly normal).

Why not try some kind of meet ups ? Even if you are shy everyone else will be in the same boat

Life / Any one in need of a bulldog? A dog's life in Poland [39]

Doug you are right about the walking thing - Alsatians are the second most popular breed in Poland and there are plenty on my street but I never see anyone walking them - poor creatures get bored and frustrated and then bark so loud they could wake the dead.
