Love / Do African or Afro- American women find Polish men attractive? [179]

You speak for me.

And me. I only go out with white European women, and that's the way it is.

It's not racist, it's just a preference. Like the fact that I prefer brunettes to blondes, or size 14s to size zeros.

UK, Ireland / The number of Anti-English Poles... [228]

Not many Poles here and too many trollish acts unfortunately. It's not a good place for setting your views on Poles...

The problem would be solved if the use of English was banned, and only Polish could be used. This would immediately reduce all these bandwidth-wasting African/Muslim/Arab/Asian trolls who are only looking for Polish women/Polish passports, and have no real interest in Poland.

But as this is a "Pol-Am" forum, that's never going to happen, for obvious reasons :D

Feedback / Polishforums on Facebook [60]

no more joining any social networks for me... enough!
:)

This is an even better option. :D

If you're not in my phone book, we're not "friends"!

UK, Ireland / Why Polish people decided to move to the UK, and their experiences. [46]

I have searched this forum and there seems to be a large amount of members living in London

Most of the regulars live in Poland, USA, Canada, Germany, the Netherlands, Ireland and around Manchester, so I'd like to know where you did your "research". On the members list, maybe? Most of those people never post here anyway, so they don't count.

Unless of course, like the BBC, you think that "London" means "England" :p

But they'll have to change their mind when they move to sunny Salford, so I'm changing yours as well. For free! ;) lol

UK, Ireland / Work in any office in England without any degree? [11]

McJobs

poor education

Let's face it, McJobs ARE jobs for people with with poor education. Not everyone gets a good education, or is even capable of achieving one.

That's the problem with liberal-leftie education policies: they really do think that everyone is equal, but they simply are not. I have no hope of ever becoming a particle physicist, and I accept that. But I've received excellent marks at degree level in several other subjects, which a particle physicist may not necessarily be able to pass, and I've worked extremely hard to get to where I am today.

However, the fact that this country looks down on traditional manual skills is also stupid; a lot of people have too high expectations these days, and the country is paying the price. If everyone has a dumbed-down "degree" in Media Studies or some other pointless degree, they become worthless, and we become like Poland, or a Third World country. Oops, I forgot - we already are - even the Pope's mate thinks so! :)

We all get at least 11 years of education in this country; if you're too lazy to bother learning to read and write, because you would rather talk about football and abuse the teachers, then don't blame "the system" because all you can get is a McJob.

Even the McJobs will be filled by lazy Brits with poor education

I have an idea: how about you come over to the UK, and ask a few people on the streets if they are unemployed. When they answer in the affirmative, I hope you remind them that they shouldn't even expect to get a McJob, because a hard-working educated Pole can do it better and deserves it more than a lazy Brit does.

But I'm quite a decent guy really, so I hope that your admission to hospital isn't as lengthy as it deserves to be.

(if Dave gets his way)! Maybe you could be a native Polish speaker and work in the areas where large numbers of Poles abide! In some places the Police where learning foriegn languages like polish do some research maybe you could get lucky

With a bit of luck, "if Dave gets his way" among the first jobs to go will be all these Polish interpreters and "The Polish expectation of public services" waste-of-money "diversity" indoctrination schemes.

You want a Polish interpreter? You pay for one yourself, or you know what to do!

We've had enough of paying all this tax for "jobs" which shouldn't even exist when times are good, never mind when we're bankrupt!!

Language / Google Translate - want know if the Polish pronunciations given are on an accurate level? [17]

It thinks that zupa means Gippo lol :)

Everyone knows that Poles don't like Gypsies, but... lmao :)

It seems quite good, but it's useless at changing words like ziemniaki to e.g. ziemniakami when it's necessary to do so. Even if it gets the grammar completely wrong, it's still close enough to help someone who doesn't know the language.

Po polsku / Tanie Parkingi na Lotnisku w Manchester - czy może ktoś coś polecić? [14]

he is going for a week.

His location is Blackpool, and he appears to want to park at the airport for 8 days, so it doesn't look like he's going back home on a one-way ticket - if he was, why would he want to park at the airport for 8 days?

This also suggests that he lives over here.

In which case: time to start learning English!

smart ass and still no help from you. Shame.

He could have found the answer himself in seconds, if he'd bothered to use his own language!
If a so-called "plastic Pole" like me can do it, I'm sure he won't have too much problem!

If you're going to live over here, at least try and learn English.

I can't believe how lazy people are these days - doesn't anyone Google anything any more??

I've got a useless internet connection, but searching for "parking na lotniskach w wielkiej brytanii" gets the required result in about 5 seconds and two clicks.

Travel / photographing industrial wasteland in Poland? [7]

Don't be put off!!

I have a kind of ongoing personal project to document the remaining textile history of this region; even though it was massive at one time, there are surprisingly few good photos online of many of the mills which remain. Photos of run-down buildings can also have a character which a building in good condition doesn't have.

I worked in two mills myself, before I retrained in something completely different, but both mills were demolished before I could take photos of them; furthermore, it seems that no photos exist online either.

Fortunately, I took a few photos inside one of them before it closed, but that was in the days before digital cameras, and I don't have a scanner :( But I really ought to get them scanned now, because they're getting a bit old and worn now (a few got damaged, but nothing that GIMP can't sort, I'm sure).

Language / Question about podoba sie [23]

The 'się' here is just a part of the verb and it means nothing.

Actually, it means quite a lot, as pointed out in post #10., but you can't translate it's usage directly into English; you couldn't say "I'm attracting myself to someone", you would say "I'm attractive to someone", etc.

However the 'very much' may suggest something more.

To make things as easy as possible:

Or, more informally "myśli, że jesteś bardzo fajną laseczką" :D

Food / Is Polish food still more natural than in the West? [142]

What is slonina?

Elephant meat ;)

No, seriously.. it's a type of bacon-like pork product, I have no idea what it would be called in English (or Dutch, for that matter). It's a bit like the fatty part of bacon, but without much "meat", if that makes any sense.

eta: too late, haha.

Genealogy / Polish nationality? Which of the following (if any) determine being Polish. [231]

I agree with this. If a person has never lived in Poland then they can't know what life in Poland is like.

True, but that doesn't mean that you can change your ethnicity or race according to your country of birth, and it also doesn't mean that you can't adopt Polish culture within the family you grew up in. You are confusing nationality with ethnicity and culture.

In my case, I grew in in a Polish-speaking immigrant family, both my parents and even my stepfather were all from Poland. Our household would have acted the same way even if we lived in Poland - the only thing which would have changed is the social and cultural differences which exist in Poland, i.e. "the way things are done" in Poland.

However, even within our family there are diifferences. Of all the members of my family who were born here, I'm the only one of us who has a qualification in Polish and can read/write/speak fluent Polish.

My sister has none of the above, has virtually no understanding of the language whatsoever, hates the Poles and anything Polish, and appears as English as someone who can trace their family back to the Domesday Book. The only time she ever mentions her Polish origin is when she gets turned down for promotion and tries to play the "race card" (unsurprisingly, this doesn't work :D ).

But it doesn't mean that she has stopped being ethnically Polish. The only reason that people like her can even get away with this, is because Poles don't look significantly different to other Europeans, and can easily assimilate into English society if they want to.

In this instance, though, I agree - she's really about as "Polish" as those 6th generation Americans who can't even pronounce thir names properly.

I suspect there would be less of this is we looked significantly different or non-white. Compare Polish assimilation to Pakistani assimilation, for example - even if they stopped being Muslim, and spoke in Received Pronunciation, people would still perceive them as "Pakis", not "English". If this was the case, not only would it be harder to hide our Polish origins, but we would also have more reason for protecting our culture from outside influences, like they do. People who are perceived as different or under threat, tend to seek out their own.

They can be proud of their Polish ancestry but they can't speak in the name of Poles.

They can't speak for residents of Poland, but they can easily speak for people with a shared culture and language, if they adopted those aspects from their parents. It really isn't quite as straight forward as some people think - a lot of this is about the individual's perception of themselves, anyway.

Life / Tricks & Dodges (The Poles are nothing if not inventive) [26]

Shame that Polish TV channels can't see the huge opportunity of around 1 million Polish people living in the UK, though. Chinese/Indians/Pakis have had access to their most important channels for decades, and it's really easy to subscribe (at fairly low cost), I'm reliably told. But not only is decent Polish TV really expensive to access over here, but they also make it as difficult as possible to obtain the channels everyone really wants. Sorry, but TVP Polonia is cr*p!

Like I keep saying, wiping out the Jews was the worst thing that ever happened to Poland, because apart from the loss of a longstanding community who didn't really cause any problems, the business skills also died with them.

Discuss ;)

Life / Best of two worlds - Poland and... Germany [29]

If you work in Zgorzelec and have fun in Gorlitz you get the worst of the two worlds.

This is an interesting thread. There's plenty of other threads for your tales of imaginary Balkan hypersexuality.

Off-Topic / PF - The Omnibus Edition [1502]

And just to make things even worse it was dismaying to see people turning on the mods for shifting their pet rant around into random. Being a mod is never easy. Being a mod when sections of the membership are hell bent on flaming and laying into other members is damned well impossible. You don’t like the mods? Then why not join them. Either that or start behaving responsibly yourselves.

You have a point.

However, I recently started a thread entitled "Would you join a Polishforums dating site?" in this forum:

Relationships, Marriage

Learn how to improve your relationship with a Polish man or a Polish woman. Polish dating tips and advice.

Yet it got moved to off-topic, soon after it started. Now please explain to me how a thread with the above title/subject, posted in the above forum, is considered "off-topic" for that particular forum. It couldn't be much more ON-TOPIC if I'd tried!

I'm not one of those who constantly moans about the mods, but now can you see why a lot of members are getting fed up with the mods?

History / In Memory of victims, who had their lives cruelly taken at Treblinka Death Camp in Poland [104]

@beckski
Absolutely. These places can have such an effect, and it makes no sense. I felt the same way inside Rome's Colosseum, and look what used to go on there. Yet it was one of the most peaceful places I've ever visited. Makes no sense at all!

Now let's see how many posts it takes for the usual idiots to turn this into an anti-Semitic thread... :(

Life / POLISH YOUTH compared to the youth in other Western countries? [57]

If she's anything like the majority of Australians I've met over here (hundreds, if not thousands) they never shut up about how much better things are "back home" and how much worse everywhere else is. Makes you wonder why they even bother "going travelling", really; because it seems like many of them would clearly prefer to sit at home with a can of XXXX and a jar of Vegemite :)

Life / Polish men mostly have short hair, why? [43]

Depends on the face/hairstyle, though. Bands like Sepultura still manage to look manly even with long hair, lol :)

My hair was about 18" long when I was 15-21 years old, and I have NEVER had so much female attention since! :(

Mind you, I did meet someone eight months after that nerve-racking haircut, and we stayed together for nearly 10 years, so maybe short hair isn't so bad after all, haha :D

Travel / Poland-My 9-day experience [239]

Danzig is the name for anyone educated outside Poland. Most people know Danzig, not Gdansk.

Rubbish. Even in the early 1980s, when the developing Solidarity movement was one of the biggest news items over here, references were made to the "Gdańsk shipyards" - not Danzig shipyards - I was very young then, but I remember it well!

Of course, some people may prefer to use the German name, but people in the UK tend to be more enlightened these days. You won't hear names like Bombay or Calcutta being used so often these days, either; because when other countries stop referring to their cities with names which remind people of colonialism, we respect their decision to do so.

People who still insist on using Germanic names like Posen, Danzig or Warschau (or indeed, words like Juden) usually have some kind of agenda; no prizes for guessing what that "agenda" is.
