News / Poland Parliament elections in October 2011 [944]

an interesting article in the last issue of Polityka about the election and who is who. The truth is that somebody has to be elected, but the at this point anything can happen.

As for me personally, I am more familiar with PO and I know what I can expect, while PiS is power hungry and most likely unpredictable, although one has to admit that Kaczynski has gained some power and managed to recover to some degree PiS. However, he is on the revenge road and is waiting patiently to pay back to all those who have hurt his pride in the past and that aloe does not make him a good candidate for the new PM in Poland- there is way too much " prywata' in his way of thinking.

News / Do Poles take Kaczynski seriously!? [199]

heh - what do you actually mean - cars are pretty difficult to digest - even if well aged

don't you get the sarcasm? Anyways. German products are highly valued in Poland, and as Olaf mentioned in his post - Poland is a good market for Germany. The sugar issue is another story all together and has nothing to do with Kaczynski, or does it?;)

News / Poland Parliament elections in October 2011 [944]

but why does he have to be so odious! The man is just beyond parody. If Kaczynski can be PM, well then anybody can be. What do people see in him he has 0 talent, is not telegenic, has a track record of the most incredible dishonesty, and he comes across as very unsympathetic and aggressive.

because he is a pure reflection of his voters. As painful as this observation may be, it's close to reality based on my observations. I am talking about people who are as odious as him, possessing as much talent as him, are as telegenic as him, are as dishonest as him and come across as unsympathetic and aggressive as him:D.

I can't wait till this man is disposed to the rubbish bin of history.

lets hope so. I will try my best to vote him out this coming Sunday- however, that might not be enough;(

News / Do Poles take Kaczynski seriously!? [199]

According to him Merkel wants Germany to be a superpower that plans to subdue Poland.

that is just his way to monopolize on similar sentiments among some Poles. I live in Szczecin and there are many people who still believe in that. The truth is that Poles consume more and more German products, so.......in a way we have been already subdued to German power;)

News / Poland Parliament elections in October 2011 [944]

only 5 more days:).

I hope Kaczynski will disappear from the Polish politics for good, but I doubt he will. Even though he is not the Polish patriot as he claims to be, he is a power hungry arrogant politician with a chip on his shoulder who pretends to care for Polish people and strangely enough there is a a big enough group who believes in his lies. Or, there is a big enough group, who has similar personal characteristics to Kaczynski. IMO he represents a large group of frustrated people, who haven't had their share of success in Poland and there is a thin chance they will. Unfortunately, there is a large group of those people, so in the end if Kaczynski was not representing them, someone else would. Simple.

What amazes me in Poland is the fact that some people believe that politicians will change their life instead of taking the initiative in their own hands. I see a generation of young people who demands having a well paying job because they are "educated", while lacking many skills when on the job.

The truth is that politicians rarely care for the country and the young generation of them are there to get in power and get connections, not to work hard in order to succeed.

Work / Looking for accommodation & teaching job in KATOWICE [78]

Aphro, it's been that way since I've been here. You can socialise on school nights out but not beyond that.

I see. I will ask the school director about that. Anyways, I have only one group who wants to go out 2 a year, so I don't think there should be a problem.

I imagine there is a ban on meeting students of the school outside of school.

there is, since when? Some of my students like to meet after class and since they are the ones who want to, I join them.

Nice thread Aphro :)

thanks Natasa, it was fun to write, at the moment I have a flu, so I am a bit under the weather:(.

Well for anyone who has the cajones to call themselves Aphrodisiac, I don't doubt it : )

I mean: REALLLYYYYYY lol

Krakow:

Haven't visited that city for a long time, so I took the opportunity last weekend.

The drive from Sz-n to Krakow was to say the least painful, since it took us an hour to get out of Sz-n. Once we got on S-3 things seem to improve a LOT, well, all the way to Gorzow and then it got worse. Stopped overnight in Wroclaw, just outside of it. Finally made it to Krakow and by the end of Saturday after taking care of errands we finally had the time to sample some nightlife in the Main Square.

Krakow was even more lively then I remember and I almost felt sad that I don't live there, because Szczecin seems to look pale in comparison.

The square was full of tourist of different nationalities, the amount of cafes and restaurants made my head spin.

we decided to grab beer and coffee on the main square, but it took us a while to find a beer garden with a quick service - this is how busy most of the places were. We had a quick bite at Chimera, which is located in the just off the main square and then sat across from the Wesele restaurant, which is stylized in with the theme of the play by Wyspianski.

The prices were decent, the food in Chimera just OK- nothing spacial - just a salad bar with some undercooked dishes. The main attraction on the Square seem to be the horse carriages, which in my opinion were travelling too close to the beer gardens all night long.

We stayed in w well equipped apartment just off the main square. I would recommend it to everyone instead of staying in the hotel since the place for 4 people cost us 300 PLN, which seems to be very reasonable for Krakow.

The ups: the beautiful architecture, the bars and restaurants and the international crowd.
The downs: getting in and out of Krakow, unless one travels by train or flies.

It took us way too long to get in and out, so next time we will be travelling via Germany. Polish roads are way too busy and way too dangerous in my opinion.

USA, Canada / Polish man's visit a nightmare - Welcome To Canada [65]

well, he might be actually right - I experienced some cases of being judged based on where I came from in Canada - it had nothing to do with what was coming out of my mouth, but that is NOT the topic of this thread. Prejudice exist everywhere.Fact.

USA, Canada / Polish man's visit a nightmare - Welcome To Canada [65]

unfortunately, he is correct when it comes to street crime in Canada but how that has become a topic is due more to his personal agenda imo.

not the topic of this thread imo

the topic is: an innocent Polish tourist has been arrested at the airport in Toronto;), held in jail for 10 days, because the immigration was suspecting him of illegal attempt of immigrating to Canada, which was not the case. The only reason I can think of is the fact that there are many illegal Polish immigrants in Canada and they immigration is a bit oversensitive- part of their job- it seems?

USA, Canada / Polish man's visit a nightmare - Welcome To Canada [65]

Plenty of statistics. If you want more ask but its common sense.

don't be so patronizing please. I could have pulled the stats myself, although I am not a Toronto Star reader. It is not enough to pull the stats, one has to find the link between the poverty and crime, which effects all races, not only darker skin, therefore your post is not racist, but ignorant to say that least. Also, you kind of shoot yourself in a foot there since those police reports could be a great case of racial profiling, which I am sure you are familiar with.

Toronto has the Jane and Finch area and Scarborough. High gun crimes are commited there. I wonder why? Spare me the poor negro argument

Sure I am going to spare you an argument, I don't waste time on people who already made their minds up.

Look at the largest cities in Canada and the United States. Where there is lots of COLORED people there is more crime.
Vancouver has lots of Asians. Its crime is quite awful. Toronto isnt much better although Vancouver ranks worst on crime reports.
Winnipeg has problems with the Natives.
Chicago, Los Angeles, New York have many colored people who live segregated. And the crimes are seen more than an all white city.

analyzing crime is a bit more complicated then you are trying to portray:).

Toronto has the Jane and Finch area and Scarborough. High gun crimes are commited there. I wonder why? Spare me the poor negro argument

yes, this are gets a LOT of coverage in the local TO press and when I was living in TO, my aunt used to worry about me, because she was reading the fekking news all the time. She was scared of TO, so I guess the media did their work. I, on the other hand did some studies in this area and I felt safe aka- nobody shot me and I saw almost no people because they were probably at work. Life experience vs your limited internet research on crime in Canada.

His conservative ideas are almost all out of this world.

so are yours to be honest. First you say that he is very conservative and then you say this to me:

I am not gonna bother arguing with far left mindsets who say
these polls are inaccurate, bias, racist, etc. Ive heard enough of that in my lifetime.

So please, make up your mind, will yah.....

Also the link provided is on the US, not Canada.

Stick to the Canadian theme at least.

Most people know that police stats on crime are always a bargaining chip when the new budget is being negotiated, so you have to dig a little deeper my friend:) and don't sound so scared. I lived in TO for some time and it is a safe city, but some areas should be avoided - its common sense.

The topic of this tread is: is the Canadian immigration force a bit to jumpy? If that is the case, why? This is not the first example, it is said that such a great country has such strange people guarding their borders. I have always been convince that Canada is a police country.

USA, Canada / Polish man's visit a nightmare - Welcome To Canada [65]

Visible 'minorities' will start getting more power. The people in power will allow MORE multicultarism/diversity/WHATEVER hell you wish to call it.

how does that comment relate to the thread at all? eh?

Instead of closing the borders and allowing Europeans to visit more easily the governments wont allow the cleanier folk in.
People who would normally easily get in will have to waste their time so that more colored people will invade the lands.

another general statement from you. The truth is that there are many illegal Poles working in Canada and the immigration knows THIS. He was a victim of the situation created by his folks who are staying illegally, well not only Poles, other nationalities too,but as long as Canada keeps their borders sealed, it is going to happen.

Its not much better in Europe. EU has opened the borders, Negros, Jews and god knows what is being aloud in by the millions.
This will get worst in 50 or 100 years. White Europe will be a melting pot or zoo. And a huge portion of libies will just let it happen
"Oh who cares".
WHERE there is more diversity there is more crime.

well, in EU people from other countries move freely as well, like Polish people who travel all over for pleasure or for work and this is great. That was the idea behind the free movement within the EU, so you, as a Polish citizen would be able to purchase a summer house in Spain etc.

More diversity ,more crime? Do you have the statistics to prove it? Looks like you are happy with Steve Harper's government, but as far as I know many Canadians aren't. The cost of keeping the border sealed it the teaser happy security, immigration officers who arrest innocent people and this:

News / Poland Parliament elections in October 2011 [944]

Yes that is the one(:
I think it is really brave of Tusk, and hopefully it will pay off. It takes a lot of stamina, I think after only three meetings like this, and he would feel physically and mentally exhausted-the nervous strain must be unbearable. This is not something a person of a nervous disposition can do.

sarcasm, or this is how you really think. I know Pawian is sarcastic in his posts.Or maybe not.

What I like about Tusk is the fact that he is calm and he talks about problems and know how to handle situations and most of all, he know how to control his emotions. PiS is just the opposite- a very emotional party and it plays on people's emotions. Tusk plays on rationality.

UK, Ireland / Grateful Polish photographer stitches up his Welsh hosts [96]

I looked at the photos again and the pics are biased and not the best photojournalism IMO. There was an American photographer who used to take pics of night life in New York, but he managed to show humility of those people.

In those pic one can see no humility, but a judging, cold eye, yet the photographer writes that Welsh people are nice and friendly- I don't see it in the presented pics.

However, knowing how well media can manipulate images to their own advantage, Mail might have done so, since they only presented some of the 50 images. Does anybody have a link to all 50? I would want to see all of them.

Any update Aphro?

update on what? On my life? Very mundane and predictable without drama I am afraid.

OK, I paid off the washing machine, so it is mine now:). It is a great piece of equipment.

The pigeons are GONE< GONE. They still try to land on mu balcony at times, but now I have a garden there - well : a little buddha statue I dragged all the way from Canada, some plants and tall grass.

Rudi.
Ha, there is a story. I was at my father's when I heard a kitten in the garden. I will really make the story short. He travelled with me to my place and we spent a week together - I think the pigeons have been gone since then.

Rudolf was a 2 monts black kitten ever hungry and ready to play. I put the add on the TOZ site and within a week he was gone. His new mother was more then happy to take him and I save him from being crashed by a car on the street.

As t he matter of fact I was very impressed with the adoption site and their professionalism. Very organized and well run site. TOZ- Towrzystwo Przyjaciol Zwierzat has been doing a great job in rescuing and helping animals with adoption.

How often do you use English these days?

Almost everyday, I teach;).

Car: well, I am looking for one and discovered that I can go for a ride (with a pick up from my home) and test the new baby. I have to admit that this is what I have been doing for the past couple of weeks now. Other then that there is really nothing worth mentioning.

Coffee: I think I finally find my version of coffee I like here in coffee heaven.

Food / Moving to Poland - Culinary Concerns and Food Markets Availability? [15]

Also: spices.

bring your spices to Poland, otherwise you would have to look for some all over Warsaw - I just find that it is easier this way and since they don't weight that much you might as well bring a handy supply.

So, anyway, food markets?

you should be OK in Warsaw when it comes to fruits, veggies, meat and so on. If you avoid processed products, you should be fine.

Last one: Baking. China didn't have ovens

they are ovens in Polish kitchens, so you should be fine.

and what dairy (milk, but not eggs, I'm fine with eggs) substitutes I may need to plan ahead for.

what are the milk substitutes in baking. I bake at times and I don't recall using milk products while baking. Perhaps you have a particular dish in mind?
