Love / More loveless sex of Poles living in the regained lands [73]

Personally I don't know.

i think you do. we have all been to various cities in Poland and possibly elsewhere, tried our luck and probably had the same result, whatever the city. people in Poland are a mixed bunch these days, moving for education and work. the movement of people almost two generations ago has no validity. in simple terms, if folk want to fck then they will. it doesn't matter which part of Poland they live in or came from.

Love / More loveless sex of Poles living in the regained lands [73]

The regained lands (ziemie odzyskane) have long been known to be a 'zbieranina' (motely collection) of rootless displaced people, and those areas are also known for their pro-leftist sympathies and weaker identificaiton with the Church than other parts of the country.

this is complete bollocks as well you know.

TVN24 has reported sexulogist Zbigniew Izdebski as saying the Poles most likely to engage in one-night stands and other forms of causal, loveless sex live in the former German territories awarded to Poland by the Big Three after the war.

this couldn't possibly have anything to do with the movement of young people to the various universities, could it ?

or has bacia been telling the world of her loose morals and the elderly are in on this too.

Love / Polish Wedding Blessing [16]

After wedding and before party, mothers of married couple bless them with bread and salt.

Also. if the wedding party pass through a village (where the locals know about the wedding) they will be stopped and offered bread.

i once got stuck in a stream of (wedding party) traffic as it passed through three or four villages and this happened.

Love / Living with a Polish man, but he has a drinking problem? [60]

I'm persistently told that my problem is cultural

No, the problem is deeper. lack of interest, stress, work related problems etc.

get a message to him that he should get himself home and discuss it, but only when he is sober.

do you consider your relationship as over ?

Travel / Is Poland's Wroclaw zoo worth visiting? [17]

In Wrocław there is special itinerary for children:

it might seem to be for children, but i know plenty adults who hunt them and then shoot them
with a camera.

i haven't been to the zoo for years. however, daughter number three has been recently and said she would go again. so i guess it's worth a visit.

i don't know the situation with cold weather and zoo animals. some of them may not be on view. just a thought.

you could go ice skating.

History / Would you classify the Poland's Communist years as a "Soviet occupation" ? [221]

Berlin most certainly was an occupied city.

for clarification: it wasn't the east-west division i meant. rather in the west of west berlin, adjoining east germany proper.

with the number of troops mentioned above it seems like an occupation in all but name. it may be considered passive though as a large number of troops were probably confined to barracks. I guess it depends whose eyes you're looking through.

Genealogy / Wielgie village in Poland [8]

could anyone tell me anything about this village?

from wikipedia.

Wielgie is a village in Lipno County, Kuyavian-Pomeranian Voivodeship, in north-central Poland. It is the seat of the gmina (administrative district) called Gmina Wielgie. It lies approximately 13 kilometres south-east of Lipno and 54 km south-east of Toruń.

or it could be one of these. (also from wikipedia)

Wielgie, Golub-Dobrzyń County in Kuyavian-Pomeranian Voivodeship (north-central Poland)
Wielgie, Lipno County in Kuyavian-Pomeranian Voivodeship (north-central Poland)
Wielgie, £ódź Voivodeship (central Poland)
Wielgie, Masovian Voivodeship (east-central Poland)

The highest concentration of the name Janke is in the north-west, but that doesn't mean that that is where your father actually came from.

More info required.

Genealogy / My grandmother Mary Sadowski came from Poland. [6]

i have no paper work to look for information. When my mother died everything got lost.

My grandmother came to this country through Ellis Island.

you might not have papers/documents, but the state does. Ship's records, naturalization papers, social security records, marriage records etc.

there are plenty of websites to go to for advice. ancestry.com genealogy.com as well as sites that specialize in Polish records.

in your case you need a town/city of origin. if your grandmother emigrated before 1918 the usa entry records will show either: russia, prussia, austria, galicia. knowing this should make it easier to find place/area of birth.

it's not the name that makes it impossible, it's the fact that you give very little in the way of usable dates.

Life / What is the school bus security standard in Poland? [18]

How about the school bus situation in Poland?

the school bus in my ex village was a regular bus, but running to a timetable that accommodated pupils. the head master/teacher also rode the same bus, as did one or two teachers. the service didn't run during school holidays.
