USA, Canada / Polish Food - 40 flavors of pierogies in the US [113]

and with borowki or apples...that's all... some people make it with soft cooked meat...

Ok, ok, unorthodox but I'm interested...

Don't eat much sweet pierogi? What kind of cheese?

I don't either but many people do. I think it is ser biały(white cheese) and somewhat sweetened.

FOR THE LAST TIME, THE PLURAL OF PIERÓG IS PIERÓGI, NOT PIEROGIES.

The trick in correcting someone is that you have to be right. In this case, you are mistaken.

USA, Canada / Polish Food - 40 flavors of pierogies in the US [113]

very good question...
more quality, less quantity?

I can think of pierogi z mięsem, z serem, ruskie(radzieckie), i chyba z kapustą i grzybami. If you want to make Polish food, make Polish food.

Actually bbq brisket pierogi sounds good...

The thing is that a certain dish that has been made for centuries is that certain dish. Kapish? No, you can't add pineapple to it.

Great, but can you tell me why would you have 40 varieties of pierogi?
We Poles can think of maybe four types, so what gives? Is America that bizzarre now? Are there jerked pierogies or pierogies ala mode?

History / Maus by Vladek Spiegelman - animals to represent Poles? [68]

That the survivor of Auschwitz portrays kapos in the camp as Poles raises more questions. He knows better.

Speaking of swine. A Jew walks into a butcher's shop, points at a large ham hanging and orders: I'll take that large fish. The butcher replies: But, Sir, that is a ham. The Jew waves his hand and says: I don't care what kind of fish it is, just wrap it up, please.

History / Maus by Vladek Spiegelman - animals to represent Poles? [68]

From Stephen Feinstein's Witness and Legacy, he states, "The depiction of Jews as mice and Germans as cats seemed to be a somewhat unfitting reminder of German propaganda through films such as Hippler's The Eternal Jew."

That the German soldiers referred to Poles as swines, you are already familiar with.

Work / Advice on Teaching English in Poland [709]

I basically agree, but this bit is interesting: The UK has decreed the US TOEIC is not secure.

What does that tell you?

They no longer believe in good sportsmanship. There is plenty of this racket to go around.

Work / Advice on Teaching English in Poland [709]

When I did my TEFL cert, we had a lot of English and Irish folks come to the American University in Paris simply because the course was better there than the CELTA offered at the British Council, and a couple weeks longer as well. Funny that in France they don't give a hoot about the British standard; they prefer the American one. When the French want to work for Renault, they will have to produce a TOEIC score. Thanks to U.S. influence around the world you boys can have a job too, just because you also speak English. And yes, Poland is behind on many things.

It is really difficult to decide if you two are more like Cliff Clavin or a Polish schoolgirl who exclaims: "British accent is better."

The only two qualifications to even think about are the CELTA and the Trinity Cert. TESOL.

You meant to say the only qualifications you can think of. Of course, you being from the colonies, your world turns around the British Isles. You know, Harry, most of the world is not that interested in British English, although we all think it is quite quaint.

USA, Canada / Moved back from Canada to Poland:). Here are the reasons why. [868]

I was joking. Take the theatre. I go often in Warsaw and one does not need to dress up. I do. I feel it is respectful to the actors and an occassion to be elegant. I hope checking out some plays is on your list.

USA, Canada / Moved back from Canada to Poland:). Here are the reasons why. [868]

I think that me and my conversation partner due to the Western exposure were the most casually dressed people there- he was wearing sneakers - I put on those painful boots on that night. Some women were wearing attire similar to the one I would wear on New Years Eve, some were more casual, but there were many suits, dresses, high heels, flashy handbags. Most people came to appreciate art

Welcome to Europe where men wear suits not only for highschool graduation, weddings, and funerals. You are probably more used to the American style art shows - flea markets.

Food / Polish vs. Chinese cuisine. It's all about a pig. [7]

This has bothered me for the longest time: The Spotted Poland-China. Now I know that it is a cross between a Poland-China and a Gloucester Old Spots. Big thanks, Thug. This must be that globalization thing I heard about from my friend. And his dad is in PO, so he knows.

News / WHY IS POLAND STILL GIVEN THE COLD SHOULDER? [197]

You know me as a Belgian, I do not need a visa for the US. But I never ever would like to go there. Period. I prefer Kraków.

That's right, stick with major players, waffleboy.

News / Do Poles take Kaczynski seriously!? [199]

What we don't take seriously is motivated first posts.

Polish democracy is under threat from the madman Kaczynski.

The hypocrite has since held hate filled torch rallies
(shades of Germany 1932) in Warsaw calling an end to the current govnt.

Where do you get your information, Pravda?

News / Giant Jesus Rising in Świebodzin ( Tallest in world ) [323]

Maybe they like Jesus and want to see the statue. When giant staues fall they need to be in the boondocks, so don't complain.

Personally, I would like a giant King Kong built in the place of Pałac Kultury. As new highrise buildings increase in Warsaw, the effect would get better and better. The whole urban planning would be around the kong. Talk about tourism then.

I don't worship guys in dresses who are trying to tell me that women are evil, and that having sex with them is a sin.

I'm glad you converse with priests, but I think they were just messing with your head. lol

And the Sioux country is beautiful.

The memorial was commissioned by Lakota Chief Henry Standing Bear to be sculpted by Korczak Ziolkowski.

The monument has been in progress since 1948 and is still far from completion.[1] If completed, it may become the world's largest sculpture.[2]

Let people build statues, Jesus statue is fine for me in this country; we had the Lenin statues already so time for change. :)

To the critics here: Raise your hand if you applauded when the Taliban was dynamiting the giant statues of Budda in Afganistan. Well, I didn't think so.

A Polish-American family has been carving the Crazy Horse statue out of a moutain in South Dakota for years now.

Poland made crazy horse.

"Why is it so big, Daddy?"

News / Why is Poland developing so slowly or in the wrong direction? Who is responsible ? [317]

but it strikes me something (or maybe its an inborn trait)seems to stop some people moving forward(difficult to put the right words)maybe I could use the example of Pan and Pani.

I have some comments on the OP, but I don't have the time now. I would like to address the comment above quickly. The polite and familiar form is common to many languages, French, German, Polish, etc. English speakers, who do not know such languages, are puzzled at first just as for example Poles who haven't studied English think that in English speaking countries all people are buddies and are on familiar terms. Just in case that is not what you mean, let me give you a different example. In France, you might greet a person "Bon jour," but a cultured French person will greet "Bon jour, Monsieur/Madam." Not that I'm saying you are not cultured, but you might not understand the difference.

Life / The Polish people have a strange attitude to cats and dogs? [84]

Strange compared to whom? Where did you get this bizzarre "factoid?" 2 years?

You know, in my neighborhood, there is no place to chain dogs. My dog has traveled across the ocean way more times that you have, and would call you a hick. He lives in Paris now.

Work / I'M SO SURPRISED BY THIS SALARY FOR IBM in WROCLAW 3000 ZL gross [135]

CP, along the same line, about ten years ago, when I complained to my Ukrainian maid in Warsaw that the washing machines here can only load 5 kg, which allows me to only wash 5 or so pairs of jeans at a time and not 8 as I would like, she stared at me with what I interpreted as sympathy and said: Who has more than five pair? This got me thinking and began the process of looking at things from not only my point of view. Many posters here need that lesson. BTW, she had worked before in Russia - Novaya Zemlya, so I was just a spoiled brat to her.

History / Recent Lech Walesa interview made by VBS [30]

This thread is about Walesa and not PiS, nor cream cheese, so focus a little. Besides, I have not heard that PO allowed "PiS supporters" to physically assault the POlice and get away with it. If they did, than you are supporting some weak government that is not fit to have the responsibility to protect its citizens when the ones who are tasked with that job (the POlice)cannot protect themselves.

Looks to me like both sides are nothing more than common thugs - exactly what the Communists said they were.

I'm not even going to touch that nonsense and will excuse you as I sometimes post after a few.

One last thing. If you think that would not rather be proud of Walesa, you are mistaken. I simply cannot be proud of him after I carefully reviewed all available information. My shock goes back at least ten years. It is now well documented and in Poland he has very little support, as you know. The myth is for outside consumption and we wish him well on his money making venture speaking to college students around the world. He was and is a simple man who was manipulated by the SB and did irrepairable damage to our nation. Its a long story and one must want to listen with an open mind to understand the transition from communism to whatever it is called now. It is not as simple as "communism fell" when Walesa jumped the fence. Communism did not fall, but agreed to share power, and boy, was is ever profitable for the communists. Perhaps another time.
