News / Decent left wing analysis of the left in Poland [10]

decent left wing analysis of lewica in poland

Before I contribute on topic, I need to know if "decent" applies to left wing or to analysis coz it is ambiguous.

Food / Need some Polish dessert recipes [47]

It all depends on individual tastes. I prefer my cheesecake heavy and wet, and very sweet with a lot of big swollen raisins inside. Now I acquired the taste for one, I must bake it at the weekend, coz my wife makes typical cheesecakes.

Food / Need some Polish dessert recipes [47]

I've seen sponge cakes made by my Polish friend collapse in the middle.

Did she faint? Coz that was a custom observed by gentry class ladies in the past- collapsed cake? So I collapse too.

Yes, it is a sort of park but not a regular one.

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Planty_Park

It started as a place open for the public in 1822. Earlier than Regent`s Park and other in London. :)

Yes, it is Fat Thursday. :)

Why are they marching?

Connected with the word green?

They are treading on the grass in Planty Park which was illegal at the time and there were those little notices everywhere. I am not sure about now.

Yes, Mexican. Once we talked about spicy cuisine in another thread.

Why queuing?

Law / On the spot payment with Police (ticket) in Poland? [25]

Do the Police always make foreigners pay on the spot? can't I get a ticket on credit like natives? ..

A foreign driver must pay in cash if he/she doesn`t have a permanent address in Poland. If they don`t possess the required cash, the police officer can accept credit card payment coz they have those terminals in their cars. If the fine isn`t paid, the police CAN detain the driver and involve the court in the case.

Language / English borrowings in Polish [38]

Hi! I'm writing a research paper on Poles' attitudes towards English borrowings.

I am highly critical of borrowings which replace the words which already exist in the Polish language. A few times each year I am shocked to read or hear how halfwit journalists or politicians introduce the words as if they didn `t know the old traditional expression.

Genealogy / Searching for grandfathers relatives-Wilcensky or Wilczewsky [6]

WilczyƄski - Woolfish/Wolfen/ Wolfenstein - surname appealed to me a few decades ago when I was very young - it sounded so awesome in the sense of scary, you know. I appreciated and respected people bearing it. Yes, I even thought of changing my own. Probably it was a result of some complexes which I suffered from then.

Travel / Sponsor a pothole in Poland / bad roads [7]

There are lots of holes

Less and less. The NIK Supreme Audit Office has just examined the state of Polish roads. 38% are still in bad condition and require repair. That means that 62% are in good or very good condition. Yes, it is visible when you drive in Poland - e.g, the roads in the vicinity of my country house or mostly in very good or medium good state.

NIK added that with the current pace of repair, we will achieve 100% in 22 years.

Of course, let`s not forget the EU has contributed its funds to many roads in Poland.

UK, Ireland / Banks in Poland won't accept blemished UK notes [14]

nothing new they wont even take $ in rage once i tore some and told em they good which i went to us

Yes, when I had burnt a few $ notes, the Polish bank also refused to accept them. So I framed them and hung in the toilet, with a little hammer underneath and a note: In case of emergency, break glass.

Work / Teaching English in Krakow -- how to find students? [52]

The amount of absolute idiots trying to "teach English" these days is remarkable.

No, they are not idiots, it is capitalism and free market. The good ones will remain, the bad ones will be rejected. Simple. My son, although so young, gained a decent number of clients and continued his classes for a few years (mainly through the word of mouth) until he realised he didn`t want to follow dad`s career. Pity.

News / Should 16-year-olds in Poland vote? [58]

in the Scottish independence referendum, there was a lot of activity from those aged 16-17.

I can assure you - if Poland was to vote for her independence, youngsters like that would also be active. :):)

But we were talking about common elections.

UK, Ireland / Which country is more corrupt - Poland or the UK? [35]

I'm tired of hearing it as an excuse,

Delph, if you are tired, you need to take a rest. :):)

PS. hey, apart from communism and WW2, I forgot to add: PARTITIONS!

Plus, this eternal Polish dilemma concerning the lifestyle on the crossroads of cultures: are we still Slavs or already Westerners? And if we are a mixture of both, which part is more important?

For you, a Brit, everything is so simple. You have never had such problems as Poland did. Well, yes, you had but in 11th-13th century, later you just moved on. While our problems only finished in 1989.

As I said, take a little rest from it all.

Ha!

Work / Why Poland employers are afraid of hiring any foreign nationals? [171]

like this one in Gdynia where they were looking for a chef except "Ukrainian or another like that"

Because the owner added: We respect customers and dislike Untermenschen, the Human Rights Watch has reported the guy and he is facing charges of racism, xenophobia, discrimination etc.

Good - teach him the lesson.

UK, Ireland / Considering opening a Polish restaurant in the UK. [9]

If I ever wanted to eat in a Polish restaurant while abroad, the first thing I would definitely order is meat pierogis with a lot of fried lard chunks - skwarki. All swimming in melted lard. I ordered this dish a few days ago when travelling around the countryside house and I didn`t regret - pure home pierogis.

Teaching English in Krakow -- how to find students?

Today - through the Internet. But expect a high competition - a few thousand wanna-be teachers are registered on a few main sites. One of them - my son, who put an ad about his English tutoring when he was in the second year of high school.

A lot of Uber bikers bring food home in big cities. Some of them foreigners - I already told the way a few times.

UK, Ireland / Which country is more corrupt - Poland or the UK? [35]

FFS they are still blaming communism for everything and that was 2 decades ago.

Don`t forget there was WW2 before communism. And after communism, there was transformation. As you can see, Poles have a lot of things to blame, it is quite understandable, I hope.

Love / Secret meaning..What does it mean when a polish girl touches her nose? [43]

What does it mean when a polish girl touches her nose?

If it is this way of touching, it means she is making a fool of yourself.

In Polish: play on the nose to sb

You can also stick out your tongue for increased effect

or even play a double with both hands!
